It records a browser window or your entire display on Windows, macOS and Linux, while letting you verify desktop audio before you commit to a long recording. Chromebook users can use the built-in Screencast app. If you are building a website or extension, the browser’s getDisplayMedia() API can request a tab, window or screen after the user approves it.
Choose the method that matches your computer and your control requirements. A same-computer webpage video does not need a USB capture card; that hardware is for recording output from a separate device.
Before you record: permissions, sound and the video’s rules
- Check the site’s terms and applicable law. Capture mechanics do not determine whether you may copy or redistribute a particular video.
- Expect an explicit sharing prompt in browser APIs. A site or extension cannot silently select a tab, window or screen with
getDisplayMedia(). - DRM is a separate issue. Protected-stream behavior varies by service; do not assume that every protected video can be recorded.
- Close sensitive content. Display Capture records everything visible, including notifications and other tabs. Window or tab capture limits what appears in the recording.
- Test audio first. A picture can look correct while the recording contains silence or the wrong microphone.
Option 1: OBS Studio (Windows, macOS and Linux)
OBS is free and open source software for video recording and live streaming. Its sources include browser windows, displays, webcams and capture cards. Use Window Capture when you want only the browser window; use Display Capture when the video, a separate player or a protected surface does not appear correctly in window capture.
Set up a browser-window recording
- Open the webpage, sign in if required, and position the video at the size you want. Hide unrelated tabs, notifications and personal information.
- Install and launch OBS Studio. In the Scenes panel, click + and create a scene such as Web video.
- In Sources, click + and choose Window Capture. Select the browser window from the Window list, then click OK.
- Check the preview. Drag the red bounding box to crop browser chrome if needed, or right-click the source and use Transform to fit it to the canvas.
- Look at the Audio Mixer. Play the webpage briefly and confirm that the desktop-audio meter moves. If you need narration, add an Audio Input Capture source for your microphone and watch for clipping.
- Run a short test recording. Play it back with headphones and verify video, system sound, speech, synchronization and the intended crop.
- Click Start Recording, start the webpage video, and click Stop Recording when playback ends.
When Display Capture is the better choice
Use Display Capture on Windows or Linux when Window Capture shows a black or blank player, when the video changes windows, or when you need to record several visible applications. On macOS, OBS provides macOS Screen Capture. Select the display or application it offers, then check the macOS privacy permissions if the preview is empty.

Display Capture is less private: every notification, cursor movement and accidental window is recorded. Turn on Do Not Disturb, close unrelated applications and rehearse the exact sequence before the final take.
Configure audio deliberately
- Desktop audio meter moves: OBS is receiving system playback. Keep the level below the red zone and use headphones if microphone bleed matters.
- No desktop meter: Open Settings > Audio and select the correct desktop-audio device, or add the appropriate output as an Audio Output Capture source. Operating-system privacy controls may also block audio access.
- Only microphone audio: Remove or mute the microphone source if you want the webpage soundtrack alone.
- Echo or doubled sound: Do not monitor the same source through speakers and a second captured path. In the mixer, open Advanced Audio Properties and set monitoring intentionally.
Recording settings that avoid surprises
Open Settings > Output > Recording before the final take. Choose a folder with enough free space and a format your editor can open. OBS’s default settings can be changed for quality, frame rate and encoder, but a higher resolution or frame rate creates larger files and requires more processing. Match the recording canvas to the webpage’s useful dimensions rather than capturing a needlessly large desktop.
Keep the test clip. It is the quickest way to catch a black player, missing audio, dropped frames or a wrong source before you repeat the entire playback.
Option 2: Browser capture with getDisplayMedia()
This route is for developers building a page or extension, or for a workflow where the user can approve a share dialog. Chrome’s documentation describes getDisplayMedia() as the screen-recording call that triggers a dialog. The browser lets the user choose a tab, window or screen and may offer audio depending on the chosen surface, browser and operating-system policy.

</script>Serve this from a secure context (normally HTTPS or localhost), call it from a user action such as a button click, and explain the choices in the permission dialog. The user must select the webpage surface and approve audio when the browser offers that option. The returned stream can be previewed, recorded with MediaRecorder, or sent elsewhere in your application.
Browser and administrator constraints
Chrome policy documentation lists screen-video capture on ChromeOS and Chrome for Windows, Mac and Linux, subject to administrator policy. Enterprise settings can disable or restrict capture. Browser support, selected-surface audio and codec availability can differ, so feature-detect the API and handle cancellation rather than treating every rejection as a bug.
For tab-specific extension workflows, Chrome’s tabCapture API is the relevant extension mechanism. It still operates within extension permissions and user-privacy rules; it is not a silent bypass of the browser’s sharing controls.
Option 3: Chromebook’s built-in Screencast
ChromeOS includes the Screencast app, so Chromebook users can record without installing a desktop recorder. Open the app from the launcher, start a new screencast, choose the area or window offered by your ChromeOS version, and begin playback. Stop when the video ends, then review the result and its audio. The exact controls can vary by ChromeOS release and administrator configuration.

If your Chromebook does not expose Screencast or your organization has disabled it, use a permitted browser capture workflow or ask an administrator. Installing a capture card will not fix a policy restriction on the same device.

Pick OBS for repeatable recordings, scenes and detailed audio control. Pick the browser API when you are delivering capture inside a product and can require a user-approved share. Pick Screencast when you want the shortest Chromebook workflow.

The OBS preview is black
Switch between Window Capture and Display Capture, confirm the correct browser window, and check whether the player uses hardware acceleration or a protected surface. Update OBS and the graphics driver where your platform supports it. If the service uses DRM, recording may be intentionally restricted; do not promise a workaround.
The recording has no webpage audio
Play the video while watching the Audio Mixer. Select the actual system output in Settings > Audio or add an Audio Output Capture source. On macOS and managed computers, review privacy and audio permissions. Test again after changing one setting.

The browser API throws NotAllowedError or closes immediately
The user may have cancelled the dialog, the call may not have followed a user gesture, the page may not be secure, or enterprise policy may block capture. Call the function from a button click, use HTTPS or localhost, report cancellation clearly, and check the administrator policy.
Video works but audio is unavailable in tab capture
Audio support depends on browser, operating system and the surface the user selected. Ask the user to choose a surface that offers audio, and provide a clear fallback such as OBS. Never assume audio: true guarantees a track.
The file is huge or playback stutters
Lower the capture dimensions or frame rate to what the webpage actually needs, close CPU-heavy applications, and choose an encoder your system can handle. A short test reveals dropped frames without wasting the full playback.
Notifications or private data appear
Use Window Capture or a selected tab instead of Display Capture, enable Do Not Disturb, close unrelated windows and inspect the final file before sharing.

Capture reliability and file-handling checklist
- Use a stable wired or high-quality network connection if the video streams online; buffering becomes part of the recording.
- Disable sleep, screen savers and automatic updates for the duration of the capture.
- Keep free disk space well above the expected output size and save to a local drive.
- Record a short section first, including a loud audio moment, then inspect it frame by frame if synchronization matters.
- Do not close or resize the selected browser window after starting Window Capture unless you have confirmed how OBS handles that change.
- Keep the original recording until the edited export has been checked.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I capture a webpage video without a capture card?
Yes. OBS, browser capture APIs and ChromeOS Screencast record playback on the same computer. A capture card is relevant when the video output comes from a separate device.
