If you mean the entire rendered page, that is a screenshot task, not the same operation: capture the page first, then convert the resulting image to AVIF. To convert an existing JPEG or PNG, use Squoosh or the command-line tool avifenc.
First decide what you want to save
“A web page as AVIF” can mean three different things, and the right steps depend on which one you need:
- One image displayed on a page: save that image from the browser. This works as an AVIF save only if the image resource is AVIF and the browser saves it in that format.
- An existing picture you own: convert a JPEG or PNG file to AVIF using an image-conversion tool.
- The whole rendered page: capture the page as an image, then convert that capture to AVIF. This produces a flat picture of the visible page, not an offline webpage with working links, selectable text, or interactive controls.
AVIF is an image format, not a webpage document format. A page may contain AVIF image resources, and HTML can offer different image sources and a fallback through the <picture> element, but that does not make the whole page itself an AVIF file. MDN describes AVIF as encoding AV1 bitstreams in the HEIF container.
Save one image that is already on the page
- Open the page in your browser and locate the image you want.
- Right-click the image, or use the equivalent image context menu on your device, and choose Save image as… if that option is available.
- Choose a folder and save the file.
- Check the saved filename and format. The extension should be
.avifif the browser saved an AVIF resource as AVIF. If it is another format, the browser or site may have delivered or saved a different representation.
web.dev’s “Serving AVIF Images” guide demonstrates the image context-menu method. It is not a guarantee that every browser, website, and browser version will behave identically. A site can offer alternate image formats, and a browser may receive a format other than the one you expected. MDN identifies image/avif as AVIF’s media type and cautions that media-type support varies. Check current compatibility for the browser version you use rather than relying on a timeless support claim.

If “Save image as…” is missing
The context menu may differ by browser, device, or the way the page displays the image. A picture may also be a CSS background or part of a more complex viewer rather than a directly selectable image. The available sources establish the right-click workflow for an image, but not exact browser-by-browser menu paths or a universal workaround for every page. If the menu is absent, try the site’s own image download control, or use a verified capture or image-extraction workflow appropriate to that page.
Convert a JPEG or PNG to AVIF
If the source file is already on your computer and is a JPEG or PNG, conversion is the straightforward route. web.dev names two options: Squoosh for a visual workflow and avifenc for a command-line workflow. The guide describes avifenc as using libavif, which can decode and encode AVIF images.

Use Squoosh
Open the image in Squoosh, select AVIF as the output format, review the converted image, and save the result. The web.dev guide identifies Squoosh as a conversion option; it does not establish particular quality settings or a single best setting for every picture. Compare the output at the size and detail level that matter for your use. Keep the original until you have confirmed the converted file looks acceptable and opens in the software you need.
Use avifenc
Choose avifenc if you prefer a command-line encoder or need to include conversion in a local workflow. The cited guide supports PNG and JPEG as input formats and identifies libavif as the underlying library. Consult the avifenc documentation installed with your version for its exact command syntax and options; those details can differ by release, so do not assume a command copied from another version will apply unchanged. Verify the resulting file is an AVIF image before replacing or deleting the source.

Which conversion path should you use?

Capture an entire webpage, then convert the image
Saving an image from a page’s context menu does not capture the page layout, text, or other content around it. If you need one AVIF picture of the rendered page, use a full-page screenshot workflow whose output format you have checked, then convert that output to AVIF with Squoosh or an appropriate encoder. The AVIF guidance cited here does not establish a standard built-in browser procedure for full-page capture directly to AVIF, so do not treat the single-image save command as one.
Before capturing, decide whether you need the visible viewport or the full page. A full-page result can be much taller than the screen and may not represent interactive content or content that appears only after a user action. For important records, inspect the capture before conversion and keep the original capture: conversion changes the image format, not what the screenshot includes.

Troubleshooting
The saved file is not .avif
The page may not have served AVIF for that image, or the browser may have saved a different representation. Check the actual saved file rather than assuming its format from the page appearance or image filename. If you have a JPEG or PNG, convert it with Squoosh or avifenc.

The image opens in one browser but not another
AVIF support varies with browser and version. MDN recommends treating media-type support as variable, and Can I Use maintains a version-sensitive AVIF compatibility table. Check the current entry for your browser version. If the receiving software does not accept AVIF, use an image format it supports or keep a compatible fallback.
The saved image is only part of the page
The browser’s image-saving command saves an image resource, not the surrounding page. For a whole-page picture, capture the rendered page separately and then convert the capture; for a page you can revisit offline as a document, choose an archive or document format instead of AVIF.
The converted file looks worse than the source
Review the conversion output before discarding the source. The cited guidance identifies conversion tools but does not prescribe a universal quality setting, and a suitable result depends on the image and intended use. Adjust the available controls in your chosen tool and compare the result at the size where it will actually be viewed.
The screenshot API result is not AVIF
ScreenshotNeo returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, not AVIF. For a page capture intended to become AVIF, save an image result such as the example’s WebP file and convert it afterward. A PDF is a document output and is not itself an AVIF image.
Keep the output useful
Use AVIF when the recipient or software needs an image in that format, not as a substitute for saving a webpage document. Check compatibility at the destination, retain the original when conversion quality matters, and be explicit about whether the deliverable is one image from a page or a screenshot of the page as a whole. For browser-specific support, MDN’s media-types guidance and Can I Use’s AVIF table are the relevant references; both should be checked against the browser version in use.
