Usually, yes in everyday browser language—but not technically. A screenshot is a still image. Web capture is the broader process of obtaining something from a web display or document: a still image of the visible viewport, a full-page image, an element crop, or a live stream of a tab, window, or monitor. The right term depends on what was captured and whether the result is an image or an ongoing stream.
What “screenshot” and “web capture” mean
Screenshot: a single still image
A screenshot is an encoded, frozen picture of a display area. Common files are PNG and JPEG; WebDriver’s screenshot documentation describes PNG as the default and supports JPEG encoding as well (WebDriver screenshot documentation). It records a visual state at one moment, not what happens before or after that moment.
The source can be the whole monitor, a browser window, the visible browser viewport, a page element, or an entire scrollable document. “Screenshot” therefore describes the output (a still image) more reliably than it describes the size of the area.
Web capture: the wider activity
Web capture is an umbrella term for obtaining content from a webpage or browser display. In one context it means taking a still image; in another it means capturing a live MediaStream for screen sharing or recording. The MDN Screen Capture API treats a display surface as content selected for sharing, such as a tab, complete window, or monitor. A stream can include audio when the browser and the selected surface provide it, but audio is optional and browser-dependent.

That is why “web capture” can describe both a screenshot workflow and a continuing screen-share workflow. Ask what the output is before choosing a tool: an image file, a PDF, a video/stream, or data about the page.
The four capture modes people commonly confuse
| Mode | What is included | Output | Best for | What changes while capturing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Viewport screenshot | The browser area currently visible without scrolling | One still image | Error evidence, a UI state, a quick share | Only the instant of capture is recorded |
| Full-page or document capture | The complete scrollable document, including content below the fold | One tall still image (or an equivalent document export) | Documentation, visual regression evidence, archival records | Sections outside the viewport must be rendered or stitched; moving content can change during the process |
| Element capture | One DOM element and its descendants, such as a card or chart | A clipped still image | Sharing a component without exposing the rest of the page | The element’s state is frozen only at capture time |
| Display or screen capture | A user-selected tab, window, or monitor | A live MediaStream, optionally with audio |
Presentations, support sessions, demonstrations, recording activity | Changes continue to appear while the stream is active |
Firefox documents both entire-page and single-element screenshots in Developer Tools (Firefox screenshot documentation). Microsoft Edge similarly describes Screenshot as turning a full page or selected area—including long or moving webpages—into a shareable image (Microsoft Edge Screenshot).
Does “web capture” mean a full-page screenshot?
Not necessarily. Full-page capture is one important type of web capture, but the phrase can also mean a viewport image, an element crop, or a live display stream. A full-page screenshot is specifically an image that spans the document rather than stopping at the current viewport.
For automated browser work, WebDriver distinguishes these scopes. Its default screenshot origin is viewport; an origin of document represents the entire scrollable page, and element capture clips to the selected element (WebDriver screenshot documentation). Those terms are useful in test plans because “capture the page” is otherwise ambiguous.

How to choose the right capture for a task
Use a viewport screenshot when the visible state is the evidence
- Capture a single error message, dialog, or control that is already on screen.
- Record the exact layout a user can see without creating a very tall file.
- Share a quick status update where content below the fold is irrelevant.
Use full-page/document capture when the page is longer than the screen
- Give reviewers one image containing an article, landing page, or settings flow from top to bottom.
- Preserve a visual record for documentation or a test artifact.
- Capture below-the-fold sections without asking the reader to reconstruct them from several images.
Long pages often contain lazy-loaded or animated content. Let the page finish loading and check the resulting image for missing sections, duplicated sticky headers, or animation frames that do not represent the intended state.
Use element capture to limit scope
- Extract one chart, product card, table, or DOM component.
- Avoid exposing unrelated account details or navigation.
- Compare the same component across builds without capturing the whole application.
Use live display capture for activity over time
- Share a browser tab during a support call or presentation.
- Record a process in which cursor movement, navigation, or changing data matters.
- Include audio only when the browser offers it for the selected surface and the participants have agreed.
Live display capture is not a substitute for a deterministic screenshot: it can reveal other windows, notifications, or private information that appear while the stream is running.
How to capture a webpage yourself
Browser tools for a one-off image
- Decide the scope. For only what is visible, choose a viewport screenshot. For the whole scrollable page, choose full-page/document capture. For one component, choose element capture.
- Use the browser’s built-in command. Microsoft Edge’s Screenshot feature can capture a full page or selected area and lets you annotate before copying or saving (Edge documentation). Firefox Developer Tools provide commands for an entire page or a single element (Firefox documentation).
- Check the result. Confirm that content below the fold is present when you requested a full page, that the selected element is complete, and that no consent dialog, account data, or notification was accidentally included.
- Save an appropriate format. PNG is useful for crisp interface text; JPEG can be smaller for photographic content. Your browser or automation tool determines which encodings it exposes.
Automate screenshots with WebDriver
For repeatable tests, tell the automation client which browsing context and scope to capture instead of relying on a human’s current view. Use the documented viewport origin for the visible area, document for the entire scrollable page, or an element clip for one DOM node (WebDriver screenshot documentation). Before capturing, put the page in the state you want to test: finish navigation, dismiss or accept required dialogs, and wait for content that is loaded asynchronously. A screenshot records the state you reach; it does not explain why the page reached that state.
Privacy and accuracy checks
Capture the smallest surface that answers the question
An element image is safer than a whole monitor when a single chart is all that is needed. A viewport is safer than a monitor stream when browser-only evidence is required. For live sharing, inspect the selected tab, window, or monitor and close unrelated windows or notifications first.
Review dynamic and personalized content
Ads, rotating banners, timestamps, user names, and location-based content can make two captures look different even when the underlying page is unchanged. Note the capture time and relevant account or locale when the image will be used as test evidence. For a full-page image, inspect the top, middle, and bottom rather than assuming every section rendered correctly.
Separate a visual record from a functional record
A screenshot proves what was visible; it does not prove that a button worked, that a request succeeded, or that hidden content was accessible. Pair the image with logs, URLs, or test results when those facts matter.

For automated website screenshots, ScreenshotNeo is the first option to try because it produces clean shots, bills only clean shots, and has a $5 paid plan for 3,000 shots. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It can capture a full page with lazy images loaded, one element by CSS selector, a chosen viewport or device preset, dark mode, retina scale, or a transparent background. You can also supply custom CSS and JavaScript, click an element, wait for a selector, delay, or network idle, hide selectors, block ads/trackers/requests/resource types, set headers, cookies, user agent, Authorization, timezone, and geolocation, resize images, cache with a chosen TTL, create signed image links, submit asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, capture up to 100 URLs per bulk call, and query usage. Its parameter names are compatible with those used by other screenshot APIs, which can simplify a migration.
Every response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server for AI clients such as Claude, Cursor, and other MCP-compatible applications, with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools.

The image stops at the fold
You captured the viewport rather than the document. Select the browser’s full-page option or configure the automation request with the documented document origin. If the page uses lazy loading, wait for the page to finish rendering and inspect the lower sections.

A component is cut off
Use element capture on the element that owns the visible content, and check for internal scrolling. A viewport image can clip a component even when the component itself is taller than the screen.

The result contains a popup or consent banner
Dismiss it before a manual capture, or hide the relevant selector in an automated workflow. If the banner is required for lawful consent, record the state you actually intend to test rather than silently removing it.
The page is blank or incomplete
Capture only after navigation and required content have settled. Check the URL, authentication state, blocked resources, and any wait condition. With ScreenshotNeo, inspect X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed to distinguish a clean result from a failed or non-billable attempt.
A live share exposes private information
Stop the stream, select a narrower tab or window, close unrelated applications, and check notifications before restarting. Screen capture shares a display surface, not merely the DOM element you intended to discuss.
Bottom line: use the precise term
Call the result a screenshot when it is a still image. Call the workflow web capture when you mean the broader act that may produce a viewport, full-page, element image, or live display stream. For a page longer than the screen, request a full-page/document screenshot; for ongoing activity, use display capture; for repeatable website images without browser orchestration, use an API such as ScreenshotNeo.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot include audio?
A conventional screenshot cannot; it is a still image. Audio is relevant only to a live display-capture stream, where support depends on the browser and selected surface.
Is a PDF the same thing as a full-page screenshot?
No. Both can represent content below the fold, but a PDF is a document format with page layout, while a full-page screenshot is one visual image of the rendered page.
Will two screenshots of the same URL always match?
No. Personalization, account state, locale, time, advertisements, animations, and loading order can change the rendered result.
