How to Screenshot a Website in Google Chrome Without an Extension

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Chrome can save a webpage as an image without an extension. For a complete page, open DevTools, press Ctrl+Shift+P (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+Shift+P (macOS), search for screenshot, and choose Capture full size screenshot. Chrome saves the resulting image to your Downloads folder. The same tools can capture only the visible viewport, one HTML element, or a rectangular area.

Choose the right Chrome screenshot command

Your choice determines what appears in the file. Chrome’s DevTools documentation describes four practical capture scopes.

What you need Command Where to find it Result
The entire page, including content below the fold Capture full size screenshot Command Menu, or Device Mode > More options A long image containing the page’s full rendered height
Only what is currently visible Capture screenshot Device Mode > More options A viewport-sized image
One button, article, card, or other DOM element Capture node screenshot Command Menu or an Elements-panel context menu An image cropped to the selected node
A custom rectangle Capture area screenshot Command Menu, then drag over the page A freeform rectangular crop

Chrome’s official guides cover these commands in Device Mode, DOM inspection, and the Command Menu. They do not promise identical results for every site: lazy-loaded content, animations, consent dialogs, and client-side updates can change what is rendered at capture time.

Take a full-page screenshot

  1. Open the page. Navigate to the URL and wait for the content you want to preserve. Scroll through it once if you need to trigger lazy-loaded sections.
  2. Open DevTools. Press Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows/Linux or Cmd+Option+I on macOS. You can also open Chrome’s three-dot menu and select More Tools > Developer Tools, as described in Chrome’s DevTools guide.
  3. Open the Command Menu. Press Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows/Linux or Cmd+Shift+P on macOS.
  4. Search for the command. Type screenshot.
  5. Run the full-page command. Select Capture full size screenshot. Chrome renders the page beyond the visible viewport and downloads the image.

Before running the command, set the page exactly as you want it shown. Expanded accordions, open menus, scroll position, signed-in content, and overlays are part of the captured state. If a cookie notice or chat bubble covers text, dismiss or close it first.

Use Device Mode instead

Open DevTools and click the Toggle device toolbar button, or press Ctrl+Shift+M on Windows/Linux or Cmd+Shift+M on macOS. In the device preview, open More options and choose Capture a full size screenshot. This route is useful when you want to set a specific mobile preset, viewport width, device pixel ratio, or orientation before capturing. The same menu contains Capture screenshot for the visible viewport.

Capture only the visible viewport

For a screenshot that matches what is on screen rather than the whole document, enable Device Mode, choose a viewport or device preset, and select More options > Capture screenshot. Resize the preview first if the exact dimensions matter. This is appropriate for bug reports, responsive-design examples, and social images where a long page would be unwieldy.

Capture one element

  1. Open DevTools and select the Elements panel.
  2. Use the element picker (the cursor-in-a-box icon) or press Ctrl+Shift+C on Windows/Linux or Cmd+Option+C on macOS, then click the element.
  3. With the node selected, open the Command Menu and run Capture node screenshot.

You can also right-click the selected node in the Elements tree and choose the node screenshot command when it is offered. Chrome saves the selected element’s rendered bounds, including its visible descendants. If the element is hidden, clipped, or dependent on a hover state, reproduce that state before capture.

The DOM workflow is documented in Chrome’s guide to viewing and changing the DOM; an earlier Chrome DevTools walkthrough also documents node screenshots at What’s New in DevTools (Chrome 62).

Select an arbitrary rectangular area

  1. Open the Command Menu with Ctrl+Shift+P or Cmd+Shift+P.
  2. Search for screenshot and choose Capture area screenshot.
  3. Drag across the region you want.
  4. Release the pointer to save the capture.

Area capture requires DevTools to be docked. It does not work while DevTools is undocked; redock it, run the command again, and then drag the selection. The Command Menu documentation describes this tool as working much like a snipping tool: Run commands in the Command Menu.

Prepare a page for a reliable capture

  • Finish loading: wait for fonts, images, and client-rendered text. A spinner or skeleton may otherwise be recorded.
  • Trigger lazy content: scroll through long pages once, then return to the desired top position before using full-size capture.
  • Control transient UI: close cookie banners, newsletter popups, chat widgets, tooltips, and open menus unless they are the subject of the screenshot.
  • Freeze changing content: pause videos and avoid capturing during carousels, ads, or live dashboards that update between frames.
  • Check responsive layout: Device Mode can expose a mobile layout that differs from a normal desktop tab.
  • Verify the result: open the downloaded file and inspect the bottom of a full-page image; very long documents can reveal missing or repeated sections.

These steps improve consistency but cannot force a site to render identically on every Chrome version or operating system. Corporate policies, browser updates, cross-origin frames, and a site’s own scripts can alter the output.

Troubleshoot missing commands and bad images

“Capture full size screenshot” is not listed

Open Device Mode and check More options; full-size capture is documented there. Alternatively, use the Command Menu and search only for screenshot. If DevTools has stale focus, click the DevTools panel and reopen the menu.

Area capture says it cannot run

Dock DevTools to the browser window. Chrome does not support Capture area screenshot while DevTools is undocked.

The screenshot contains a cookie banner or chat bubble

Dismiss the banner, close the widget, and run the command again. If the site immediately recreates the overlay, wait until its animation ends or use element inspection to identify what is covering the page. Chrome does not automatically remove these overlays.

Images or sections are blank

Wait for network activity to settle, scroll to trigger lazy loading, and capture again. For an element screenshot, ensure the node is visible and has a non-zero size. A page that requires a login, geolocation, or a user gesture may not render its protected content in the state DevTools captures.

The full-page image is extremely tall or appears broken

Long documents can stress image viewers and memory. Capture a viewport or selected element instead, or split the page into logical sections. Remove fixed overlays before retrying; a fixed header can otherwise appear repeatedly in a stitched full-page result.

Keyboard shortcuts do nothing

Use the browser menu path More Tools > Developer Tools, then click inside DevTools before pressing the Command Menu shortcut. Shortcut mappings can also be changed by operating-system settings or managed-browser policies.

When Chrome’s built-in capture is the right choice

DevTools is free, requires no installation, and is ideal for an occasional manual capture. It gives you direct control over viewport, element selection, and page state. It is less convenient for scheduled jobs, many URLs, authenticated automation, consistent cookie-banner removal, or producing PDFs at scale. Chrome’s commands also provide no API response that tells a calling program whether a page failed, timed out, or was blocked.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture, it accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed.

It also supports full-page screenshots with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, 12 device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper sizes and page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, selector waits, delay or network-idle waits, ad/tracker/request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change the output image format in DevTools?

The documented DevTools commands save a screenshot through Chrome’s download workflow; the cited guides do not specify a format selector. Use an image editor or an automated API when a particular PNG, JPEG, or WebP output is required.

Why is my full-page capture different from a print preview?

A screenshot records the rendered screen layout, including responsive styling and visible UI state. Print preview uses print CSS and pagination, so it is a separate output process.
