Use your device’s built-in screenshot control, but treat a login screen as sensitive. On Windows, try Windows+Shift+S or a Print Screen shortcut; on an iPhone or iPad, press the required two buttons; on a logged-in Mac, use Shift-Command-5. Android may intentionally return a blank image when the app protects its login window.
Capture only the information needed, inspect the image at full size, and redact passwords, PINs, one-time codes, recovery codes, usernames, account numbers and notification previews before sharing it.

Windows 10 and Windows 11
Capture a login form in a normal desktop session
- Click the login window or page you need to document.
- Press Windows+Shift+S. Microsoft describes this as opening the Snipping Tool capture overlay.
- Choose rectangular, freeform, window or full-screen capture.
- Select the area, then use the notification or Snipping Tool window to save, copy or annotate the result.
A rectangular selection is usually safest because it excludes unrelated usernames, notifications and other account information. A window capture can include browser tabs, addresses or chat widgets around the form.
Use the Print Screen shortcuts
- Print Screen (PrtSc): copies the full screen to the clipboard.
- Alt+Print Screen: copies the active window to the clipboard.
- Windows+PrtScn: captures the full screen and saves it in the PicturesScreenshots folder.
After a clipboard capture, open an image editor or support application and paste the image. Save a redacted copy rather than overwriting the original if you must preserve evidence for an authorized investigation.

Show the Windows sign-in screen
- Press Windows+L to lock the computer.
- Wait for the sign-in screen to appear. Access requires a password, PIN or Windows Hello biometric.
- Try the documented capture shortcut permitted by your keyboard, device policy and Windows configuration.
The sign-in screen is not the ordinary logged-in desktop. If the shortcut does nothing, produces no usable image or is disabled by policy, do not keep entering credentials just to obtain a picture. Use an external camera to document the display, keep the camera angle tight, and make sure the password or PIN field contains no typed secret.
iPhone and iPad
Face ID models
- Quickly press and release the side button and volume-up button together.
- Tap the thumbnail that appears in the lower-left corner if you need to crop or mark up the image.
- Save or share the edited copy. Screenshots are stored in Photos.
Home-button models
- Quickly press and release the side button and Home button together.
- Tap the thumbnail to crop or annotate.
- Open Photos to find the saved screenshot.
For a lock-screen capture, check the image before sending it. Notification previews can reveal messages, account identifiers or recovery information even when the login panel itself is harmless.
Mac
Capture a logged-in desktop login window
- Press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot app controls.
- Choose the entire screen, a window or a selected portion.
- Capture the login panel, then save the result using the Screenshot app controls.
Use a selected portion when documenting an error beside a login form. It reduces accidental disclosure of other windows and desktop files.
Capture FileVault or the macOS pre-login window
Apple documents the shortcut for the logged-in Mac desktop, not as a guarantee for the pre-login FileVault or macOS login window. Try it once if policy allows. If the window does not respond, photograph the display with another device. Keep the frame tight enough to exclude paperwork, nearby screens and any visible credentials.

Android: why a login screenshot can be blank
Android Developers documents the FLAG_SECURE window flag. It tells Android not to allow screenshots or to display the window on a non-secure display such as casting. The documentation specifically identifies sensitive activities, including user logins and online purchases, as use cases.
Consequently, a blank image can be intentional security behavior rather than a fault in your screenshot tool. Do not try to bypass the protection. Ask the service for an approved export, or capture a separate error message that contains no credentials.
Android screen-lock steps vary by manufacturer. Google says a device may use a PIN, pattern, password or fingerprint, so button combinations and menus can differ between models. Follow the controls provided by your manufacturer rather than assuming another phone’s shortcut applies.
How to decide between a full screen, window and region
- Region: best for a single validation message or field label; it minimizes exposure.
- Window: useful when support needs the complete login dialog, but inspect the title bar and surrounding controls.
- Full screen: appropriate only when the screen context matters, such as proving that a device is at the Windows sign-in surface.
- External camera: the fallback for secure or pre-login screens that reject operating-system capture.
Before choosing, identify the screen state (logged-in desktop or pre-login/authentication window), whether the operating system or app permits capture, and where the image will be saved.

Privacy checklist before you share the image
- Never include a password, PIN, one-time code, recovery code or QR sign-in code.
- Crop out usernames, email addresses, account numbers and notification previews.
- Check the image at full resolution; text that looks unreadable in a thumbnail may still be legible in the original.
- Make a redacted copy for a support ticket and retain the original only in a controlled location when there is a legitimate evidence requirement.
- If capture is blocked, use an approved support workflow or an external camera instead of defeating a security control.
Common problems and fixes
The Windows shortcut does nothing
Confirm that the keyboard has focus and that organizational policy permits screen capture. Try Snipping Tool from the logged-in desktop. On the Windows sign-in surface, treat failure as a security or workflow limitation and use an external camera rather than typing secrets into the screen.
The screenshot is black or blank on Android
Check whether the screen is a login, payment or other sensitive activity. FLAG_SECURE may be responsible. Do not use an unauthorized bypass; request an approved export or photograph a non-sensitive error.
The Mac shortcut fails before login
The documented Screenshot app workflow applies to the logged-in desktop. For FileVault or another pre-login window, use a tightly framed external-camera photo if the shortcut is not accepted.
The image contains too much information
Retake it with a region selection, or crop and redact the copy before transmission. Review the full-resolution file, not just the preview.

A support team says the image is unreadable
Send the original pixel dimensions through the team’s approved secure channel, but remove secrets and unrelated account data first. Avoid repeatedly shrinking the image; resizing can make small error text impossible to inspect.
