Navigate that page with the lifecycle milestone you need—commit, domcontentloaded, or load—then call page.screenshot(). The script-created page is one unambiguous browser tab; retaining its Page reference lets you capture that tab while the document is still loading or after a specific element becomes ready.
What “specific tab” means in Playwright
In Playwright, a Page represents one browser tab (and, in Chromium, an extension background page). A browser context can contain multiple pages, so keep the object for the tab you intend to capture instead of relying on tab order. The straightforward, documented setup launches a browser, creates a page, navigates it, and screenshots that page. See the Python Page API for the current interface.
This does not automatically select a tab in a separately launched Chrome or Firefox window. Connecting to an existing browser requires a different remote-connection setup, and the sources for this workflow do not establish attach-to-existing-tab instructions. Treat that as a separate configuration task and verify the current Playwright connection documentation for your browser and deployment.
Install Playwright and prepare a capture script
Install the Python package and browser
- Install Playwright:
python -m pip install playwright. - Install the browser binaries:
python -m playwright install. In a minimal Linux image you may need the documented system dependencies as well. - Save the script below as
capture_tab.pyand run it with the same Python environment in which Playwright is installed.
The API is version-sensitive, so consult the current documentation if an option behaves differently in your installed release.

Capture one controlled tab at a chosen loading point
Complete synchronous example
from playwright.sync_api import sync_playwright
URL = "https://example.com"
with sync_playwright() as p:
browser = p.chromium.launch()
page = browser.new_page(viewport={"width": 1440, "height": 900})
# Choose the milestone that matches the evidence you need.
page.goto(URL, wait_until="domcontentloaded")
page.screenshot(path="capture.png")
browser.close()
page is the specific tab. If you create more tabs, retain each returned Page object and call screenshot on the correct one:
first = browser.new_page()
second = browser.new_page()
first.goto("https://example.com", wait_until="commit")
second.goto("https://example.org", wait_until="load")
first.screenshot(path="first-tab.png")
second.screenshot(path="second-tab.png")
Close the browser in a finally block in production code if navigation or capture errors must not leak a browser process.
Choose when the screenshot should occur
The wait_until value controls the navigation milestone. Pick the earliest state that guarantees the content your image is meant to show.
| Value | What has happened | Use it when | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
commit |
The response has been received and document loading has started. | You need an early visual of the initial response, skeleton, or loading state. | Images, scripts, and client-rendered content may not exist yet. |
domcontentloaded |
The document has been parsed and the DOMContentLoaded event fired. | The relevant HTML structure is present but you do not need every resource. | Late images or JavaScript-rendered data can still be missing. |
load |
The page load event fired; this is the documented default for page.goto(). |
Dependent resources should be loaded before the capture. | Client-side applications may continue rendering after load. |
networkidle |
Playwright observes 500 ms with no network connections. | Only when network quiescence is genuinely your requirement. | Playwright discourages using it as a testing readiness signal; analytics, polling, or streams can prevent it, while delayed rendering can make it misleading. |
These definitions and the warning about networkidle are documented in the Page API. A separate page.wait_for_load_state() is usually unnecessary when goto already waits for the selected state. If you do use it, navigation must have committed first.
Wait for the content you actually need
Use a locator as the readiness signal
For dynamic pages, an application element is usually a better signal than an arbitrary sleep or global network idle. Navigate, then wait for the selector that proves the target content is visible:

from playwright.sync_api import sync_playwright
with sync_playwright() as p:
browser = p.chromium.launch()
page = browser.new_page()
page.goto("https://example.com/dashboard", wait_until="domcontentloaded")
page.locator("[data-testid='report-ready']").wait_for(state="visible")
page.screenshot(path="dashboard.png", full_page=True)
browser.close()
If the site exposes no reliable marker, a short, bounded delay can be a fallback, but it is less deterministic than a locator or application condition. Set an explicit navigation timeout where slow pages are expected:
page.set_default_navigation_timeout(60_000)
page.goto(URL, wait_until="load")
Capture an intentional loading state
To document how a page looks while it loads, use commit and screenshot immediately. For a reproducible intermediate state, wait for a known loading selector rather than guessing a delay:
page.goto(URL, wait_until="commit")
page.locator(".loading-spinner").wait_for(state="visible")
page.screenshot(path="loading-state.png")
Choose the output that matches the question
Playwright’s screenshot API supports several distinct outputs, covered in the Python screenshots guide.
Viewport screenshot
page.screenshot(path="viewport.png")
This captures the currently visible viewport. Set viewport when a fixed desktop or mobile layout matters.
Full scrollable page
page.screenshot(path="whole-page.png", full_page=True)
full_page=True captures the full scrollable document, not merely what is visible without scrolling. Lazy-loaded content may require scrolling or an application-specific trigger before capture; the API itself does not guarantee that every lazy resource has loaded.

One element
page.locator(".invoice-header").screenshot(path="header.png")
Element screenshots are useful when the tab contains unrelated navigation or ads.
Bytes instead of a file
image_bytes = page.screenshot(type="png")
# Pass image_bytes to an uploader, test assertion, or image processor.
Use the supported format, clipping, and quality options for your installed Playwright version. PNG is lossless; JPEG and WebP can reduce size when your downstream system accepts them.

Handle multiple tabs opened by a page
When a click opens a new tab, wait for the new page event and capture that returned object. This keeps the target explicit:
from playwright.sync_api import sync_playwright
with sync_playwright() as p:
browser = p.chromium.launch()
page = browser.new_page()
page.goto("https://example.com", wait_until="domcontentloaded")
with page.expect_popup() as popup_info:
page.get_by_role("link", name="Open report").click()
report_tab = popup_info.value
report_tab.wait_for_load_state("domcontentloaded")
report_tab.screenshot(path="report.png")
browser.close()
If a site opens a tab without a direct popup action, record the context’s pages before and after the action and select the new Page by its URL or a page-specific locator. Avoid assuming that the last page is always the desired one in parallel workflows.
Common failures and precise fixes
“Executable doesn’t exist” or browser launch failure
The Python package is installed but its browser binary is not. Run python -m playwright install in the active environment. In containers, install the required operating-system dependencies using Playwright’s platform instructions.

Navigation timeout
The server may be slow, the URL may redirect indefinitely, or the page may never reach the selected lifecycle state. Confirm the URL, increase the navigation timeout for a known slow origin, and consider domcontentloaded instead of load when complete subresources are unnecessary. Do not switch blindly to networkidle; persistent polling can make it wait forever.
Screenshot is blank or shows a skeleton
You captured too early for the content you expect. Replace commit with domcontentloaded or load, then wait for the specific content locator. Check that the selector is correct and that the page is not displaying a bot challenge or an authentication redirect.
Dynamic data is missing after load
The load event does not mean a single-page application has finished rendering. Wait for a visible result, a stable text value, or an application-defined readiness attribute. A fixed sleep can hide race conditions and should be a last resort.
Full-page image omits content
Some content is lazy-loaded only after scrolling. Trigger the site’s supported loading behavior, wait for the relevant elements, and then call full_page=True. For a bounded region, use an element screenshot or a clip instead of an extremely tall document.
The wrong tab was captured
Check which Page object you call. For popups, use expect_popup(); for several existing pages, inspect each page’s URL and a distinguishing locator. A script-created page is not the same as a tab in an independently launched desktop browser.

- Make readiness explicit: tie the capture to the element or application state that matters.
- Control the rendering environment: set viewport dimensions and, where relevant, use a consistent browser context and timezone.
- Bound every wait: navigation and locator timeouts turn hangs into actionable failures.
- Reuse a browser process: for batches, create contexts or pages within one launched browser instead of launching a new process for every URL.
- Separate artifacts: include the URL, chosen wait state, timestamp, viewport, and failure reason in your job metadata.
- Protect privacy: screenshots can contain account data, tokens, or personal information; restrict file permissions and retention.
There is no single “best” lifecycle state. The correct choice depends on whether you are proving an early loading visual, document structure, resource completion, or application-rendered content.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, so you do not install or manage a browser for each capture. Its cleaning step accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

FAQ
Can Playwright capture a tab that I opened manually?
Not with the launch-and-new-page example. That script controls its own browser. Attaching to an independently launched browser is a separate remote-connection configuration.
Should I always wait for load?
No. Use the earliest lifecycle point that contains the evidence you need, then wait for a meaningful locator when client-side rendering continues.
What is the difference between a page screenshot and an element screenshot?
A page screenshot captures the viewport or full scrollable document; an element screenshot crops to the locator’s rendered bounds.
