Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on Search ranking and quality systems, so the strongest strategy is not a separate set of “AI SEO” tricks. Make important pages discoverable, publish original work that answers real questions, keep product and business details accurate, and measure whether visibility brings qualified visits and results.
What are the SEO trends in 2026?
The meaningful shift is that Google Search has more than one way to present answers. Conventional results remain important, while AI Overviews and AI Mode add generative answer experiences. That changes how visibility may appear; it does not make the foundations of SEO obsolete.
Google describes AI Overviews and AI Mode as grounded in its Search ranking systems. Their retrieval-augmented generation uses indexed pages, and query fan-out can explore related searches to build an answer to a complex query. A business should therefore work on discoverability and useful coverage of a subject, rather than trying to optimize for a hidden “AI ranking” separate from Search.
Google Search Central’s John Mueller answered “In short, yes!” when asked whether SEO remains relevant to generative AI search. Google reported in 2026 that AI Overviews had more than 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode more than one billion monthly users. These are Google’s figures, not a promise that any particular site will be shown or receive traffic.

How do you stay competitive in SEO in 2026?
1. Publish something that is not interchangeable
Original expertise is a more durable advantage than producing another page that restates common advice. Google recommends useful, people-first content with a distinct point of view, first-hand experience, or evidence that adds something readers cannot get from a generic summary. Google Search Central puts it plainly: “Don’t just recycle what others on the internet have already said, or could easily be produced by a generative AI model.”
- Use subject-matter experts to explain decisions, trade-offs, and exceptions—not just definitions.
- Where available, publish original data, experiments, or first-hand reviews. Explain how the work was done so readers can interpret it.
- Answer the real task behind a query, including follow-up questions that naturally arise, rather than creating near-identical pages for every wording variation.
- Organize the page with descriptive headings and add relevant images or video when they genuinely clarify the subject.
“Original” does not mean adding novelty for its own sake. It means giving readers a reason to choose your page: credible experience, useful evidence, a clearer explanation, or a perspective that changes what they can decide or do.
2. Treat technical SEO as the access layer
A page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet to be eligible for Google’s generative AI features. Eligibility is not a guarantee that Google will index, serve, or cite it. Technical work is therefore a prerequisite for visibility, not a substitute for a useful page.
- Keep essential pages publicly crawlable, and check indexing and serving issues in Search Console.
- Make important text and links accessible when a page relies on JavaScript. Do not assume content visible after a particular interaction is necessarily available to crawling systems.
- Reduce duplicate or substantially overlapping pages so it is clear which page should represent a topic.
- Check mobile usability and page latency as part of the visitor experience.
Passing a technical check does not guarantee a ranking. It removes avoidable barriers and helps search systems understand which pages are available to consider.

3. Keep product and local information accurate
For ecommerce, maintain accurate product information in Merchant Center. For a local business, keep its Google Business Profile complete and current. Google identifies both as information sources that can help products and businesses appear in regular Search and AI responses. They complement a strong website; they do not replace it.
4. Use AI to assist production, not manufacture pages at scale
Generative AI can help with research and structuring, but the output still needs human review, factual verification, and a meaningful original contribution. Google’s scaled-content-abuse policy may apply when many pages are produced without added value. Keep a clear editorial process: verify claims, check that examples are real, add expertise or evidence, and make the page useful even if a reader never sees where it was produced.
Does SEO still matter with AI Overviews and AI Mode?
Yes. Google’s explanation is that these experiences use Search ranking systems and retrieve from indexed pages; there is no need to abandon technical SEO or publish a second copy of a site for AI. Query fan-out does mean a complex user question may lead to related searches, so thorough topic coverage can help answer connected needs. That is a reason to make a coherent set of useful pages—not to split one good answer into arbitrary fragments.
Visibility in an AI feature and a click to a website are different outcomes. A citation or appearance may support recognition without producing a visit. Conversely, an ordinary result can continue to earn clicks even when an AI feature is present. Measure the forms of visibility and business outcomes that matter to your site rather than treating a single rank position as a complete account of performance.

What should you stop doing for “AI SEO”?
Google says several widely promoted formatting tactics are not requirements for appearing in its Search AI features. Avoid spending time on rituals that do not improve the experience or serve a concrete Search feature:
- Do not create an llms.txt file as a Google Search requirement. Google says it does not require llms.txt or other special AI files.
- Do not force tiny content chunks or a fixed page length. Use the structure and depth that make a subject easy for people to understand.
- Do not rewrite every sentence to match every long-tail query exactly. Cover real user needs in clear language instead of generating exhaustive near-duplicates.
- Do not add special “AI markup” on the theory that it unlocks citations. Structured data remains useful for eligibility for the rich results it supports, but Google does not describe it as a special generative-AI requirement.
These points apply to Google Search’s stated requirements; they are not a claim about how every external AI product discovers or cites web pages.
How should you measure SEO when AI visibility grows?
Google said Search Console reporting and controls for generative-AI appearances—including impressions, pages shown, and countries—had rolled out to all websites worldwide by August 31, 2026. Use those views alongside conventional Search data, but do not mistake an appearance metric for a business result.
| What to monitor | What it helps answer |
|---|---|
| AI-feature impressions, pages shown, and countries in Search Console | Where Google reports generative-AI visibility for your pages and markets. |
| Traditional Search visibility and visits | Whether established organic discovery is changing alongside AI appearances. |
| Qualified visits and conversions | Whether the visitors who do arrive take useful actions. |
| Assisted conversions and branded demand | Whether visibility contributes to a later decision even when the first interaction does not convert. |
| Pages surfaced or cited in AI features | Which content is associated with those appearances, rather than relying only on a site-wide total. |
Interpret click trends with care. In an August 2025 post, Google’s VP and Head of Search Liz Reid wrote, “Overall, total organic click volume from Google Search to websites has been relatively stable year-over-year.” Google also said average click quality increased and that users increasingly click forums, videos, podcasts, in-depth reviews, and first-person analysis. Those are Google’s reported observations; results may differ by sector, and the statement is not a forecast for an individual site.
A practical 2026 SEO priority order
- Fix access first. Check crawlability, indexing, snippet eligibility, JavaScript-rendered content, and duplicate pages for the pages that matter.
- Choose topics by user need. Build a useful coverage plan around actual tasks and related questions, not a list of mechanically varied keywords.
- Improve the source material. Add first-hand expertise, evidence, methodology, or a clearer decision framework where it is genuinely available.
- Maintain your entity data. Review Merchant Center product feeds or Google Business Profile details when they apply to your business.
- Review performance across surfaces. Combine Search Console generative-AI reporting with regular Search visibility, qualified traffic, conversions, and assisted outcomes.
- Apply an editorial gate to AI-assisted work. Require a human to verify facts, remove unsupported claims, and ensure each page contributes value rather than merely increasing page count.
Capture rendered pages when checking technical changes
A screenshot can be a useful record when a team is reviewing a rendered page, comparing a layout before and after a change, or documenting what a page looked like at a particular viewport. It is a QA aid, not evidence by itself that a page is indexed or ranks. For a do-it-yourself check, open the page in a browser, select the viewport or device you need to inspect, wait for the page to finish rendering, and capture the visible or full-page result. Check key text and images against the live page; a screenshot cannot establish crawler access or Search eligibility.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its one-call endpoint can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture of Stripe; replace the URL with the page you want to inspect. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and whether it was billed. It also has an MCP server for AI agents, with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools.
For page-review workflows, available options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or a custom viewport, retina scale, PDF settings, custom CSS or JavaScript, click-before-capture, hide selectors, waits for a selector, delay, or network idle, and blocking ads, trackers, requests, or resource types. Other options include custom headers, cookies, user agent and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, image resizing, configurable-TTL caching, signed links for public image tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, an OpenAPI spec, and compatibility with parameter names used by other screenshot APIs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a page’s appearance in an AI Overview guarantee a visit to my site?
No. An appearance is a visibility event, not a guarantee of a click. Assess it alongside qualified visits and conversions.
Does structured data help with generative AI visibility?
Google says structured data is not a special requirement for generative-AI features. It can still support eligibility for the rich results it is designed for.
Should every business use Merchant Center and Google Business Profile?
No. Merchant Center is relevant to product listings, and a Business Profile is relevant to local businesses; maintain the data source that fits your business.
