To convert a known list of webpages in bulk, send that list to a browser-rendering batch service or run your own browser automation. Choose an image, PDF, or video endpoint that supports batching, then verify rendering controls, per-URL status, retries, and file delivery before submitting thousands of pages. A URL list is different from a site crawl: a batch processes addresses you already have, while a crawler discovers pages from a sitemap or links.
This guide explains both approaches, how to handle JavaScript and lazy-loaded content, and how to avoid silent failures.
Choose the workflow before choosing a tool
Your input and desired output determine the right workflow. Define whether you have an explicit list, need to discover pages, or must record motion rather than a static page.

Images preserve the visual page as pixels. PDFs use print/document layout and can paginate differently from a screenshot. Video records time, movement, or scrolling; it is not a higher-resolution screenshot. Decide the required format and dimensions first.

Prepare and validate a URL list
- Normalize addresses. Put one absolute URL per line or one URL in each CSV row. Include the scheme (
https://) and remove accidental spaces. - Remove duplicates. Decide whether tracking parameters represent separate pages. If not, canonicalize them before capture.
- Classify access. Mark pages that require login, cookies, special headers, geolocation, or a user agent. Public and authenticated URLs may need different jobs.
- Choose output names. Use a stable slug plus an index, because page titles can contain characters that are invalid in filenames.
- Test a small sample. Capture a few representative pages, including a JavaScript-heavy page, a long page, and a page with a consent banner. Confirm dimensions, fonts, images, and links before a large run.
Keep the original list and a run identifier. A manifest should map every input URL to its final URL, HTTP status, output filename, dimensions, and error message.
Use a batch rendering service
Hosted renderers run a real browser and can provide asynchronous jobs, polling, callbacks, retries, and a ZIP or object-storage delivery. Vendor capabilities differ, so read the current documentation for batch limits and output retention. For example, url2image documents pasted or uploaded lists, a JSON batch API, one image per URL in a ZIP, a manifest with title, final URL, HTTP status and page size, and a CSV of pages that did not render. Its homepage advertises batches of up to 500 URLs and a retry for failed loads; that is a vendor-specific limit, not a general industry maximum.

Submit in manageable batches
Even when a provider accepts hundreds of URLs, smaller jobs make failures easier to retry. Start with 25–100 URLs, record the job ID, poll until completion, then retry only failed addresses. Respect the provider’s rate and concurrency limits. Store the response manifest beside the files so a later run can distinguish a network timeout from a page that returned an error.

Rendering controls that affect fidelity
- JavaScript and lazy loading: wait for a selector, a fixed delay, or network idle. Some services scroll once to trigger lazy images before capturing.
- Viewport and full-page mode: set a desktop or mobile width explicitly. Full-page images can become extremely tall; split or resize them if a downstream system has pixel limits.
- Cookies and headers: provide consent state, authentication cookies, authorization headers, language, timezone, or geolocation when the page varies by visitor.
- Interactions: click tabs, dismiss overlays, or hide selectors before capture when the page requires an action.
- Resource policy: blocking ads, trackers, fonts, or video can speed jobs but may change the visual result. Document every blocked resource type.
Convert a whole site with a crawler
Use a crawler when you do not already know every URL. Start from a sitemap where possible, define allowed hosts and path prefixes, and set a maximum page count or depth. A crawl should record discovered URLs, redirects, duplicate canonical URLs, robots or access failures, and the reason each page was skipped. Crawler endpoints commonly package results in a ZIP, while list-based endpoints process only the URLs you submit.
Do not assume that a crawl captures private areas, infinite-scroll content, or URLs generated only after form submission. Supply authentication and interaction rules explicitly, and check whether query parameters can create an unbounded URL space.
Run local browser automation
Local automation is useful when pages contain confidential data, you need custom logic, or a hosted service cannot meet a compliance requirement. It also means you own browser installation, updates, concurrency, storage, and retry behavior. A minimal Playwright-style workflow is:
- Install a supported browser and automation library in a reproducible environment.
- Read URLs from a text file or CSV and validate each address.
- Launch a limited number of browser workers; begin with two to four pages concurrently.
- For each page, set a navigation timeout, wait for a meaningful selector or network idle, and optionally scroll to the bottom to trigger lazy content.
- Save a screenshot, PDF, or video using a deterministic filename and write a success or failure record immediately.
- Retry transient navigation failures with backoff. Do not retry authentication failures indefinitely.
- Close pages and contexts after each job so cookies and memory do not leak between URLs.
For screenshots, choose PNG for lossless text and UI, JPEG for smaller photographic files, and WebP when your consumers support it. For PDFs, configure paper size, margins, landscape orientation, and whether backgrounds print. For video, set a fixed duration and viewport and ensure the encoder’s container is accepted by your editor or archive system.

Concurrency, memory, and storage
Each browser page consumes memory, and full-page screenshots require a bitmap proportional to the rendered height. Increase concurrency only while monitoring memory, CPU, network saturation, and target-site response codes. Write files incrementally rather than keeping an entire batch in RAM. Use a bounded queue so a temporary storage outage does not create thousands of open browser pages.
Output-specific guidance
Images
Capture the viewport when you need a realistic screen view; use full-page mode for audits and archival snapshots. Record device scale factor because a retina capture has more pixels than the same CSS viewport. Hide transient selectors such as cookie banners only when your capture policy permits it, and note that removal changes the visual state.
PDFs
PDF output follows print rules, not necessarily the screenshot viewport. Check page breaks, headers and footers, background colors, embedded fonts, paper size, margins, and landscape mode. A long page may become many pages or a continuous document depending on the endpoint. Compare a PDF and screenshot of the same URL when visual fidelity matters.
Videos
Video capture must specify what moves: timed animation, a scripted scroll, or a fixed-duration recording. Confirm the returned container and codec; one documented recipe returns scrolling video as WebM and states that its format parameter does not convert video output to another format. If your editor requires MP4, plan a separate transcoding step and preserve the original file.

Compare a sample against the live page after every browser or service change. Dynamic sites can legitimately differ because of experiments, personalization, time, or access controls. Treat a successful HTTP response as delivery status, not proof that the page rendered correctly.

Compare services on workload, not headline limits
Evaluate each candidate against six questions:
- Does it produce every required format, at the dimensions and quality you need?
- Does it accept explicit URL lists, discover pages by crawling, or both?
- What are the per-batch, monthly, and account limits?
- Can you set viewport, full-page behavior, waits, cookies, headers, interactions, and regional settings?
- Does it expose per-page status, retries, polling, webhooks, and a durable manifest?
- How are captures priced, stored, downloaded, and deleted?
Published quotas and prices are snapshots and can change. Vendor pages describe their own capabilities, not a neutral benchmark. Estimate cost from your real count of successful renders, expected retries, video duration, and storage.
