The other systems, called clients, send requests; the server handles them and returns a result. A server is defined by its role, not by a particular size, shape, or location.
What a server is
NIST defines a server as “A computer or device on a network that manages network resources,” and also as “A system entity that provides a service in response to requests from clients.” NIST’s glossary captures both parts: servers provide a service, and clients request it.
The word can refer to dedicated physical hardware, a virtual machine, a cloud instance, or server software running on a general-purpose computer. A laptop can act as a server if it provides a service to other devices; a powerful rack-mounted machine can act as a client when it requests a service. The role matters more than the hardware.
How a server handles a request
A client might be a web browser, mobile app, another server, or a networked device. It sends a request using an agreed protocol, such as HTTP for web traffic or a database protocol for a query. The server applies the rules for its role, performs the required work, and sends back a response.

- The client makes a request. It identifies the service or resource it needs, such as a web page, a file, or a database result.
- The server accepts and interprets it. The server uses the request protocol and its own configuration to decide what operation is being asked for.
- The server does the work. It may return a stored file, run application code, query a database, authenticate a user, or contact another server.
- The server responds. The result could be a page, API payload, file, database record, DNS answer, or an error explaining why the request could not be completed.
A web request, for example, may be more than a browser fetching a file. NIST describes web servers returning static files when appropriate, or invoking another process to create dynamic content. That process may query a database or contact another host before the web server returns the result. NIST’s web-server guidance describes this division of work.
Common types of servers
Server names usually identify the job a system performs. A single machine can run several roles, while a larger service may spread one role across multiple machines.
| Type | What it does | Typical example |
|---|---|---|
| Web server | Receives HTTP requests and delivers web content, including static files and, in many setups, responses generated by other software. | Serving a website’s HTML, images, or downloads. |
| Application server | Runs server-side application code and business logic to produce dynamic results. | Checking an order, applying business rules, or returning app data. |
| Database server | Processes queries and provides stored data to applications. | Returning account or inventory records to a web application. |
| File server | Stores files and makes them available to authorized clients. | A shared folder accessed by employees on a network. |
| Print server | Coordinates shared printers and print jobs. | Managing print requests from several office computers. |
| DNS server | Helps clients find network services by resolving domain names to IP addresses. | Finding the address associated with a website domain. |
| Infrastructure and access servers | Provide supporting services such as authentication, directories, email, logging, infrastructure management, or remote access. | Checking a user’s identity or recording system events. |
NIST lists file, print, and database servers as examples of systems that manage network resources. NIST’s glossary provides those examples, while U.S. government network-infrastructure guidance describes additional common roles.
Web server vs. application server
A web server’s primary job is handling web requests and delivering content. That content may be static—such as an HTML file, image, video, or download—or may be produced with help from application code. An application server’s central job is running that code and applying business logic, such as validating a transaction or assembling a personalized response.
The distinction is useful, but not absolute. A web server can include application-related features, and an application server can deliver web content. IBM notes that the line has become less rigid as browsers have become common application clients and web-server capabilities have expanded. IBM’s comparison of web and application servers explains the difference in responsibilities.

In a simple setup, one server may handle both roles. In another, a web server or reverse proxy receives requests and passes selected work to application servers. Those application servers can then call database or storage servers. Separating roles can make it easier to allocate resources and control access, but it also creates more components to configure and monitor.
How DNS helps a client find a server
People usually enter a domain name rather than an IP address. DNS—the Domain Name System—translates human-readable domain names into IP addresses that computers use to locate one another. Cloudflare’s DNS overview explains this basic lookup function. Authoritative DNS servers hold the definitive records for a domain.
A typical uncached lookup can involve four kinds of systems: a recursive resolver, a root nameserver, a top-level-domain nameserver, and the domain’s authoritative nameserver. The resolver coordinates the lookup and returns an answer to the client; the authoritative server supplies the domain’s definitive record. Cloudflare’s guide to DNS server types describes these roles.

Resolving a domain tells the client where to connect; the web, application, or other server at that address still has to process the request.
How servers work together in a website
A website can depend on several server roles even when a visitor sees only one domain. DNS helps the browser find the service. A web server or reverse proxy receives the request. Application code may generate a personalized result, and a database or storage system may supply the information needed to build it. A CDN or other intermediary may also sit between the visitor and the origin server. Cloudflare’s origin-server explanation describes how DNS, reverse proxies, CDN services, and origin servers relate.

This arrangement means a page can fail even when some of its components are working. For instance, a domain may resolve while an application is unavailable; an application may be running but unable to retrieve data; or a static page may load while a dependent service does not. Thinking in terms of roles helps narrow down which part of the request path needs attention.
Why servers matter
Servers let many clients use shared applications, data, files, identity systems, and network services. Centralized services also give administrators places to define permissions, log activity, make backups, monitor health, and plan for growth. These controls are useful only when they are configured and maintained; putting a service on a server does not automatically make it secure or reliable.

Static file delivery, dynamic transactions, analytics, and large data sets place different demands on processing, memory, storage, and network capacity. Administrators also consider latency, throughput, redundancy, backups, recovery objectives, access controls, patching, monitoring, isolation, and incident response.
Where a server runs: physical, virtual, or cloud
A server role can run in different deployment environments. A dedicated physical server is hardware assigned to a workload. A virtual machine provides an isolated software-defined system on shared physical hardware. A cloud instance is hosted infrastructure provisioned through a cloud service. These are deployment choices, not different definitions of “server.”
Choosing among them depends on operational needs: who maintains the hardware and operating system, how much control is required, how resources will be provisioned, and what availability and recovery arrangements are needed. Hosting a server with a provider can shift some infrastructure work, but the application’s configuration, permissions, data handling, and access policies still require attention.

How servers scale as demand grows
Vertical scaling means giving one server more resources, such as processing capacity, memory, or storage. Horizontal scaling means running additional server instances and distributing work among them. Caching can avoid repeating work, while load balancing can spread incoming requests across instances.
Recommended Free Tools
These approaches address different bottlenecks. More resources on one server may be the simpler change for a workload that has outgrown its current limits. Additional instances can help when work can be divided, but they may require shared storage, coordinated state, health checks, and a way to route requests. Managed services can reduce some operational tasks, though they do not remove the need to understand dependencies, access, backups, and recovery.
What to consider when choosing or planning a server
- Role: Identify whether the system needs to serve web content, run application logic, store data, share files, resolve names, or provide another service.
- Workload: Estimate the kinds of operations involved, including static delivery, dynamic transactions, analytics, concurrency, and data size.
- Deployment: Decide whether on-premises hardware, a virtual machine, or hosted infrastructure fits the required control and administration model.
- Performance and availability: Consider latency, throughput, redundancy, backup frequency, and the recovery objectives for the service.
- Security and administration: Plan authentication, permissions, patching, monitoring, isolation, logging, and incident response.
- Growth path: Determine whether scaling up, adding instances, caching, load balancing, or using a managed service is appropriate as demand changes.
Capture a web page without running your own browser setup
If your server-side application needs a screenshot of a page, you can build a browser-based capture workflow yourself or call a screenshot service. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers; one GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its capture options include full-page screenshots with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, device and viewport choices, custom CSS or JavaScript, waits, request blocking, and caching. Common server problems and what to check
A server error is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Check the component responsible for the failed step rather than assuming every problem is in the web server.
- The domain does not resolve: Check the DNS records and whether the client is reaching the intended resolver and authoritative information. A server cannot answer a request if the client cannot find its address.
- The connection reaches a server but the page fails: Determine whether the web tier returned an error, timed out, or could not reach an application dependency. Review the relevant service logs and request path.
- The page loads but shows missing or incorrect data: Check the application’s logic and its connection to the database or storage service, including permissions and query failures.
- Only some users or requests fail: Compare the affected path, client, and time against logs and monitoring. If traffic passes through a reverse proxy, CDN, or load balancer, include that layer in the investigation.
- The service becomes slow as demand rises: Identify whether processing, memory, storage, database work, or network throughput is the constraint before choosing vertical or horizontal scaling.
- A service is unavailable after a change: Check recent configuration, software, and access-policy changes, then use the system’s recovery procedure if restoring service is more urgent than diagnosing in place.
Frequently asked questions
Can one computer be both a client and a server?
Yes. A computer can request services from other systems while providing a service of its own to clients.
Does every server have to be online all the time?
No. A server is defined by the service it provides, not by a guarantee of continuous availability. Whether a particular service must be continuously available is an operational requirement.
