How to make App Store and Google Play screenshots for free
1. Capture the real app screens
- Build a release-like version of the app with realistic sample data. Remove debug overlays, test accounts and personal information.
- Capture the screens that communicate your primary benefits: onboarding, the main task, a distinctive feature and a successful result.
- Use the simulator or a physical device for each platform. Keep status-bar treatment, orientation and safe areas consistent.
- Export lossless PNG files when possible. Keep an untouched folder of originals so you can regenerate designs without quality loss.
2. Select a generator by your constraints
For no login and no watermark, start with ShotForge or FrameShot. For open-source browser use, choose Storeshots. For every store size with one action, AppScreenStudio’s Essential tier is the documented free option. For a short caption set and ZIP download, Screenshot Otter is sufficient. 3. Write one benefit-led headline per slide
Keep the sentence specific (“Plan routes offline”, “Share invoices in seconds”) rather than describing a button (“Tap Reports”). Use large type and high contrast. A store thumbnail is small: if the headline cannot be read at roughly one-quarter scale, shorten it.
4. Build a consistent visual system
- Use one background family and one headline position across the set.
- Keep the device angle and shadow treatment consistent unless a deliberate hero slide needs a variation.
- Do not cover important UI with a frame, caption or decorative shape.
- Use the same terminology as the app and listing description.
5. Generate every required size and locale
Use a tool’s multi-size or ZIP export where available. Otherwise, repeat the project for each required iPhone, iPad and Android target. For localized sets, verify translated text inside the image—not only in the store metadata—and allow extra width for longer words.

6. Inspect the export before uploading
- Open every file from the ZIP, not just the first image.
- Check pixel dimensions, orientation, alpha/transparency behavior and file format.
- Look for clipped headlines, unreadable UI, missing fonts, broken line wraps and accidental personal data.
- Confirm slide order and that the first three images explain the product without requiring the user to swipe.
- Upload to App Store Connect or Google Play only after the local review passes.
Privacy, browser processing and store publishing
“Runs in the browser” does not by itself prove that files never leave your device. If screenshots contain customer data, read the tool’s privacy documentation or use sanitized captures. Storeshots’ open-source status lets a technical team inspect and self-host the application, subject to AGPL-3.0 obligations; the other pages summarized here do not establish equivalent local-processing guarantees.
Direct publishing is not universal. Screenshot Otter lists it as a Pro feature, AppScreens lists it on higher tiers, and Launch Shots advertises it. For the other tools, plan on downloading files and uploading them manually.
Common problems and fixes
The export has the wrong dimensions
Check the selected platform and device preset before exporting. AppScreenStudio documents all App Store and Google Play sizes; FrameShot documents exact Apple and Google resolutions. If a tool does not state a required size, export a known dimension and verify it in an image editor before submission.
A free plan stops after a few exports
Look for a daily or project cap. AppScreenStudio Essential allows two exports per day, AppScreens allows up to five screenshots, and Screenshot Otter limits free output to its stated device formats. Split work across days only if your release schedule permits; do not assume creating another account is allowed.
Text is clipped or unreadable
Reduce the headline to one benefit, increase contrast and preview at thumbnail size. Reposition the device frame so the app’s important controls remain visible. Re-export after checking the longest localized string.

The image contains private data
Replace names, email addresses, payment details and production URLs with fixtures before uploading. Keep a separate sanitized capture set for marketing work.

The store rejects an otherwise attractive image
Validate file dimensions, orientation and format against the current App Store Connect or Google Play submission screen. A template can look correct while still targeting the wrong device class.
