To archive one page immediately, open the Wayback Machine’s Save Page Now form, paste the page’s exact URL, and submit it. Internet Archive returns a permanent archived URL you can save or cite. This captures the submitted page—not the entire website—and it does not enroll the URL in future crawls.
Save a single page with Save Page Now
- Open the Wayback Machine’s Save Page Now form.
- Paste the complete URL, including the correct scheme (
https://where applicable), path, query string and fragment when relevant. - Submit the form and wait for processing.
- Open the resulting archived URL. Check the page text, images, stylesheets and other important assets before sharing it.
- Keep that archived URL when you need a citation or a stable reference to the captured version.
Internet Archive says Save Page Now saves the URL you submit, including images and CSS when those resources can be fetched. It does not save outlinks, multiple pages, directories or an entire site, and the capture is not automatically scheduled for later recrawling.
What the archived URL and date mean
A Wayback URL contains a timestamp with the capture year, month, day, hour, minute and second. Use that timestamp when documenting which version you used. You can also search for a URL and narrow results by date range.
When a capture is incomplete, a link inside the replay may open the closest available capture rather than a resource captured at exactly the same moment. Check the timestamp in the address bar and the capture list instead of assuming every asset belongs to one synchronized snapshot.

Verify the capture before relying on it
Check the page itself
- Confirm the title, headings, body text and publication date are present.
- Open important internal links and note whether they lead to archived copies or live pages.
- Inspect images, stylesheets, downloadable files and embedded media that matter to your use case.
Record provenance
Save the archived URL, its timestamp and the original URL in your notes. For legal, academic or editorial work, record when you accessed the replay and describe any missing assets or altered behavior.
Save a page while browsing
Internet Archive’s help material lists official browser extensions and a JavaScript bookmarklet for invoking Save Page Now from the page currently open in your browser. These are convenience methods, not different archival systems: they still submit one page at a time and face the same crawler and replay restrictions.
Extension workflow
- Use the current extension listing for your browser and install the official Internet Archive extension.
- Open the page you want to preserve.
- Use the extension’s save command to submit the current URL.
- Follow the returned archive link and verify the result.
The extension documentation also describes viewing archive history and checking for archived copies when a page returns an error. Browser support and interface details can change, so use the listing and README that accompany the current release.
Bookmarklet workflow
- Create a browser bookmark whose address is the JavaScript bookmarklet supplied by Internet Archive.
- While viewing a page, activate the bookmarklet.
- Complete the Save Page Now submission and verify the returned replay.
Can Save Page Now archive an entire website?
No. Submitting a homepage does not follow its links, discover unlinked pages or create a recurring site crawl. Internet Archive explicitly describes Save Page Now as a single-page method.

If you own a site and need dependable restoration, keep your own backups. Internet Archive’s terms do not promise a general-purpose backup of every public website and do not guarantee that a particular site will be archived.
Why a page, image or script may be missing
The page was inaccessible
Password-protected pages, blocked resources, inaccessible hosts and certain SSL configurations can prevent a capture. A robots exclusion or an owner request may also keep content out of the archive.
The page depends on JavaScript or a live server
Interactive applications often assemble content after the initial response or require requests to the originating server. Replay may therefore show only an HTML shell, stale data or nonfunctional controls. Pages rendered as ordinary HTML are generally easier to preserve.
The image or stylesheet was not captured
Each resource must be fetched and archived separately. If an image, CSS file, font or script was unavailable, the replay can contain broken images or unstyled text even when the main document exists.

The page was never discovered
Crawlers may miss orphan pages with no links pointing to them. They do not enter search terms into site forms, so content reachable only after submitting a search can remain absent. Saving the exact URL directly is the practical way to request a one-page capture.
Troubleshoot an unsuccessful or incomplete save
Nothing happens after submission
- Confirm the URL is complete and publicly reachable without a login.
- Try the canonical HTTPS address and remove temporary tracking parameters when they are not part of the page identity.
- Retry later if the origin is timing out or returning an SSL error.
The replay says a page is missing
Search the URL in the Wayback interface and expand the date range. A missing result can reflect non-discovery, robots restrictions, an owner exclusion, authentication requirements or an inaccessible origin; it is not proof that the page never existed.
Images or layout are broken
Open the image or stylesheet URL separately in the archive and inspect nearby captures. If no resource capture exists, the original asset was not preserved. You can save important resource URLs individually, subject to the same restrictions.
A link opens a different date
Read the timestamp in the resulting archived URL and compare it with the capture list. The interface may choose the nearest available capture when the exact linked resource is absent.

Interactive controls do not work
Assume that live API calls, logins, forms, video players and other server-dependent features may fail in replay. Use the archived text and downloaded resources as evidence, and consult the original owner if you need authoritative current behavior.
Plan a reliable archival workflow
- Define scope: list the exact pages, files and dates you need rather than assuming a homepage submission covers a site.
- Capture promptly: save pages before a redesign, takedown or domain change.
- Verify assets: inspect images, CSS, downloads and key links immediately.
- Keep independent copies: retain source documents and your own backups when restoration matters.
- Document uncertainty: note missing assets, replay-only behavior and the exact timestamp you cited.
