Use an official, authenticated API for media you own or are authorized to access. Vimeo can return short-lived playback, download, or streaming links for videos in an eligible authenticated account. YouTube’s developer policies, by contrast, prohibit downloading or storing copies of YouTube audiovisual content without prior written approval and prohibit separating its audio and video components. A page URL, an API resource URL, and a direct media or playlist URL are different objects, with different permissions and lifetimes.
Start with authorization, not extraction
Before writing code, establish four facts:
- Ownership or permission: you control the account or have explicit authorization to access the media.
- Platform approval: your application and account tier satisfy the service’s API requirements.
- Purpose: playback, download, archival processing, or live playback may require different fields and scopes.
- URL behavior: links may redirect to a CDN, expire quickly, or identify a playlist rather than a media file.
A successful HTTP response is not proof that copying or reusing the content is permitted. Do not treat an extractor’s ability to find a URL as permission to download, repackage, or redistribute a video.
Three URLs you must keep separate

Direct links often carry authorization in the URL itself. Follow redirects and honor the expiration information returned by the platform instead of assuming that a URL is permanent.
Vimeo account videos: obtaining playback or download links
Vimeo documents direct file links for videos uploaded to the authenticated account in its Working with Video File Links guide. The documented workflow requires a Vimeo Standard membership or better (with legacy Pro accounts noted by Vimeo), an API application, a video hosted on Vimeo, and an access token with public, private, and video_files scopes.

Request the video resource
Use an authenticated GET for the video resource. Replace VIDEO_ID and the token with values belonging to the account that owns or is authorized to access the video:

Choose the field for the job
play: Vimeo recommends this for third-party players. It can expose progressive playback plus HLS or DASH forms.files: file metadata and source-oriented information. Vimeo says these links do not expire, but does not recommend them for third-party players.download: download-oriented links with response headers intended for downloading.
Vimeo’s Help Center says playback and download links expire after 24 hours. Returned links redirect to CDN locations with a time-to-live, so your code should follow redirects at request time and use the supplied expiration metadata rather than persisting a guessed permanent URL. Progressive MP4 is convenient for simple playback; HLS or DASH is generally better when the player can handle adaptive renditions. Do not expose your Vimeo access token in client-side JavaScript; fetch links on your server and return only what the authorized client needs.

Vimeo Live: a different HLS workflow
Live-event playback is not the same as retrieving a stored account video. Vimeo’s Live playback guide documents an Enterprise-only API route that returns an HLS master playlist URL in m3u8_playback_url. Vimeo states that this URL is valid for 10 seconds. The master playlist references rendition playlists, which reference media segments.
Treat the live URL as a short-lived playback credential: request it immediately before starting the player, do not store it as a durable share link, and be prepared to request a fresh URL when it expires. Enterprise availability and API details should be rechecked against Vimeo’s current documentation before deployment.
YouTube: the official API policy boundary
YouTube’s Developer Policies state: “You and your API Clients must not, and must not encourage, enable, or require others to: download, import, backup, cache, or store copies of YouTube audiovisual content without YouTube’s prior written approval.” The same policy prohibits separating, isolating, or modifying audio or video components made available through YouTube API Services.
The policy also says API clients must not use technology other than YouTube API Services to access or retrieve API Data, including portions of YouTube audiovisual content, and prohibits scraping YouTube applications or scraped content. These are platform terms, not a complete analysis of copyright law in every country. If you need an offline copy, obtain written approval and use an officially authorized workflow.

Do not build a “get MP4” or “extract audio” feature on top of the YouTube Data API. The API can provide metadata and embed or playback-oriented information, but those capabilities do not grant permission to download the underlying audiovisual stream.
Why third-party extractors are not an authorization layer
Projects such as yt-dlp track changing site behavior. Its extractor documentation describes YouTube restrictions and PO Token requirements and warns that formats or features may be unavailable without tokens supplied externally. That makes extractor behavior implementation-specific and changeable, not a guaranteed platform API.
Even when an extractor returns a URL, it does not establish that you own the media, that the platform approved the access method, or that copying is allowed. Use such tools only within a permission and terms framework you can document.
Designing a reliable media-URL service
Keep credentials and URLs server-side
Store tokens in a secret manager, request the narrowest scopes that meet your use case, and never log bearer tokens or full signed URLs. Pass a short-lived application URL to your client only when it is needed.

Follow redirects and expiration
Use an HTTP client configured to follow redirects, but record the final response status and content type. Cache metadata rather than signed URLs. Refresh a link after its stated expiry or when the CDN returns an authorization error.
Validate the returned media

Content-Typeand size before handing the response to a player. - For HLS, verify that the URL ends in or returns an
.m3u8playlist and that the player can reach its segment URLs. - For progressive files, support range requests when your player or processing pipeline needs seeking.
- Apply timeouts, exponential backoff for transient 5xx responses, and a maximum redirect count.
Separate playback from download
Playback URLs may have different headers, expiration, and intended use from download links. Expose separate application actions such as /play and /download, enforce authorization on both, and record which field supplied the URL.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I turn a Vimeo page URL into an HLS URL without authentication?
The documented account-video workflow is authenticated and applies to videos available to the authorized account. A page URL alone is not a substitute for the required token, scopes, and account eligibility.
Should I save a returned Vimeo CDN URL in a database?
Save the video identifier and the field or rendition you need, then request a fresh URL when required. Playback and download links can expire, and CDN redirects have their own time-to-live.
Does an HLS URL contain the whole video?
An HLS master playlist points to rendition playlists and media segments. Your player retrieves those resources during playback; the master URL is not a permanent video file.
