9Anime vs. AnimeSuge in 2024: What Actually Happened, Subs, Dubs, Risks, and Legal Alternatives

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: the original premise is outdated. 9Anime had already rebranded as AniWave in August 2023, and AniWave disappeared in August 2024. AnimeSuge was an unofficial streaming site discussed in anime communities, but its operator, licensing, official domains, and permanent shutdown status were difficult to verify. Both could be convenient for finding subbed and dubbed episodes, yet neither should be treated as a dependable or licensed 2024 recommendation.

This retrospective explains the rebrand timeline, what “subs and dubs” meant in practice, why clone domains and aggressive advertising mattered, and which legal services now offer more reliable access.

Quick verdict

Question Best-supported answer
Was 9Anime still a separate service in 2024? No. 9Anime announced a rebrand to AniWave in August 2023.
Was AnimeSuge a licensed platform? It was widely treated as an unofficial aggregator; authoritative evidence of licensing is not established.
Which had the “better” interface? Community users sometimes preferred AnimeSuge’s navigation, but that is anecdotal rather than a verified performance test.
Were subtitles and dubs guaranteed? No. Language tracks varied by title, season, episode, source server, uploader and region.
Best dependable legal starting point? Crunchyroll for broad anime coverage and simulcasts, subject to regional licensing.
Useful legal complement? HIDIVE for selected niche, classic, dubbed, simulcast and uncensored titles where available.

What 9Anime, AniWave and AnimeSuge actually were

9Anime became AniWave

9Anime announced that it was rebranding as AniWave on August 2, 2023, citing legal trouble. The change means “9Anime in 2024” is historically imprecise: the 9Anime name referred to the earlier brand, while AniWave was the name used afterward. TorrentFreak reported the rebrand at https://torrentfreak.com/9anime-rebrands-to-aniwave-citing-legal-troubles-230802/.

AniWave then disappeared in August 2024 during a broader wave of piracy-site shutdowns. The reported timeline is summarized at https://perplexityaimagazine.com/blog/9-anime/. A later domain using “9Anime” or “AniWave” is not automatically operated by the original service.

HiAnime was a different lineage

HiAnime is often incorrectly described as the new 9Anime. It followed a separate chain: Zoro.to became Aniwatch, which adopted the HiAnime name in March 2024. TorrentFreak documented that history at https://torrentfreak.com/piracy-moghul-aniwatch-rebrands-to-hianime-240301/. HiAnime later displayed a goodbye message and went offline in March 2026, according to https://torrentfreak.com/piracy-giant-hianime-to-announces-mysterious-goodbye/.

AnimeSuge and the problem of domain identity

AnimeSuge was known in anime-streaming communities as an unofficial site listing subbed and dubbed episodes. Reddit posts from 2024 describe outages, replacement domains and arguments over whether returning sites were genuine:

Those posts are useful evidence of user experience, not proof of ownership, safety, licensing or an official domain. There is insufficient authoritative evidence to verify AnimeSuge’s original operator or a precise permanent shutdown date. Search results and social-media accounts are especially unreliable for brands that attract impersonators.

Were these sites legal?

Licensed services obtain distribution rights from copyright owners. Unofficial aggregators generally embed or link to streams without clearly demonstrated authorization. U.S. copyright law gives rights holders exclusive rights including reproduction, distribution and public performance under 17 U.S.C. §106.

That distinction does not justify predicting what will happen to every individual viewer. User legality depends on jurisdiction, conduct and circumstances. The defensible practical concerns are copyright complaints, domain seizures, takedowns, unstable catalogs and deceptive advertising.

A 2024 U.S. Trade Representative report identified 9anime and HiAnime among problematic anime-streaming services. That establishes their treatment in piracy-market reporting, not every operational detail about every similarly named domain. See the submitted report and the USTR review.

What “subs and dubs” meant in practice

“Subbed” normally means Japanese audio with translated subtitles. “Dubbed” means an alternate-language audio track. Unofficial sites often listed the two versions separately, but a label was not a guarantee of quality or completeness.

  • A dub might cover only some episodes or a later release schedule.
  • Subtitle timing and translation quality could differ between servers.
  • “Dub” did not establish that the audio was an officially licensed dub.
  • Language availability could change by season, source server and country.
  • A player might lose an audio track or subtitle file when a host disappeared.

For any title, check whether the specific season is complete, whether the desired language is available, whether subtitles are synchronized, and whether the licensed service offers it in your country.

How usable were the unofficial services?

Sites in this category were commonly marketed around searchable catalogs, episode lists, multiple playback servers and separate sub/dub entries. Community reports sometimes praised AnimeSuge’s navigation. Without a dated test log or screenshots, however, it is not possible to establish that one service objectively had a better interface, uptime or player.

The experience could vary with the domain and server. Common failure modes included:

  • Pop-ups, redirects and fake browser-virus warnings.
  • Clone pages requesting passwords or payment details.
  • Broken or mislabeled subtitle and dub tracks.
  • Episodes missing from one server but present on another.
  • Sudden domain changes, regional blocks and disappearing watch histories.
  • No meaningful customer support or refund process.

Do not enter a reused password or payment information on an unofficial site. An ad blocker, private DNS, VPN or antivirus tool may reduce some nuisance behavior, but none proves that a service is licensed, safe or legal.

What happened to 9Anime and AniWave?

  1. August 2, 2023: 9Anime announced its rebrand to AniWave, citing legal trouble.
  2. August 2024: AniWave disappeared amid piracy-site shutdowns.
  3. March 2024: HiAnime launched under that name after the separate Zoro.to-to-Aniwatch lineage.
  4. March 2026: HiAnime went offline after displaying a goodbye message.

This sequence is why a page promising the “best 9Anime site in 2024” can direct readers toward a clone rather than an original service.

Legal alternatives that provide a similar viewing experience

Crunchyroll

Crunchyroll is the strongest general substitute for readers prioritizing current-season releases, a large anime catalog, apps and English-language availability. Its official plans page is https://www.crunchyroll.com/premium/. Prices shown for the United States in August 2026 were Fan at $9.99 per month, Mega Fan at $13.99 and Ultimate Fan at $17.99; taxes, promotions and regional pricing can change. The service advertises ad-free viewing, simulcasts and offline viewing on eligible tiers, with benefits varying by plan and region.

HIDIVE

HIDIVE positions itself around selected simulcasts, fresh dubs, classics, niche titles and some uncensored releases. See https://welcome.hidive.com/. Its catalog, pricing and availability are location-dependent, so it works best as a complement when a specific show is exclusive or especially well represented there.

Netflix

Netflix can be a sensible choice for households already paying for general entertainment, profiles, parental controls and downloads. Sign-up is at https://www.netflix.com/signup. Anime availability is title- and region-specific, and Netflix is not a complete replacement for an anime-focused simulcast service.

Free licensed options

Ad-supported services such as Tubi and Pluto TV, along with official distributor or publisher YouTube channels, can provide free legal episodes where licensed. Their catalogs, advertising, dubs and geographic access vary substantially. Check the individual title rather than assuming a service carries an entire franchise.

Choose by viewer need

Need Practical direction
Current-season simulcasts Check Crunchyroll first, subject to country licensing.
Large mainstream catalog Crunchyroll is the most direct starting point.
Niche, classic or selected uncensored titles Check HIDIVE’s current catalog.
Lowest legal cost Compare free ad-supported catalogs and current promotions.
Offline viewing Use a paid service with downloads, such as eligible Crunchyroll plans.
Dub-focused viewing Open the title’s language list before subscribing; do not assume every season is dubbed.
Maximum reliability Use licensed services with official apps, support and stable billing.

How to verify where an anime is legally available

  1. Search the exact series and season on a legal availability guide such as JustWatch US.
  2. Confirm the result is for your country, not merely a global search result.
  3. Open the provider’s own title page and check audio, subtitle, season and episode details.
  4. Check whether the advertised price is monthly, annual, promotional or subject to tax.
  5. Review download, device and simultaneous-stream limits if those features matter to you.
  6. If a title is missing, recheck later: licensing agreements and regional catalogs change.

Final verdict

The “best two websites” framing does not hold up. 9Anime was no longer operating under that name in 2024, AnimeSuge’s official status and domains were difficult to authenticate, and both belonged to an unstable unofficial-streaming ecosystem. Their historical appeal came from convenience and apparent access to subbed and dubbed episodes, but catalogs, players and domains could change without warning.

For reliable access, start with a licensed service and verify the individual title, language and country. Crunchyroll is the broadest general starting point; HIDIVE can fill selected catalog gaps; Netflix, Tubi, Pluto TV and official YouTube releases may cover particular shows.
