Usually, no. Enabling HPET or forcing Windows to use a platform clock is not a universal FPS or latency upgrade. Modern Windows normally selects a suitable timing source automatically, and Microsoft documents useplatformclock as a debugging option. Test it only for a specific, measurable problem—and keep the change only if repeatable benchmarks improve.
What HPET is—and what it is not
HPET stands for High Precision Event Timer, a hardware platform timer developed by Intel and Microsoft for high-resolution timing, multimedia, and other time-sensitive workloads. Microsoft describes the Windows timing model in its high-resolution timestamp guidance; Intel documents the platform implementation in its HPET documentation.
“High precision” describes the timer’s resolution and facilities. HPET is not a CPU overclock, GPU optimization, FPS unlocker, or dedicated input-lag reduction mode. It supplies a clock that software and the operating system may use for measuring intervals and scheduling work.
HPET, firmware, Windows, and timer resolution are different controls
Online tweak lists often treat several unrelated settings as one HPET switch. They operate at different layers:

| Setting | Layer | What it controls | Equivalent to “enabling HPET”? |
|---|---|---|---|
| HPET option in BIOS/UEFI | Firmware/platform | Whether and how the timer is exposed and configured before Windows starts | No |
| High precision event timer in Device Manager | Windows device layer | System-device state and visibility | No |
useplatformclock |
Windows boot configuration | Forces a platform clock as Windows’ performance-counter source | No; it does not guarantee a specific HPET implementation |
| Timer resolution | Windows/application behavior | The scheduling interval applications request | No; timer resolution is separate from performance-counter selection |
Firmware configures platform timing before handing control to the operating system, as Intel explains in its platform documentation. Windows can then choose the processor’s invariant Time Stamp Counter (TSC) or a platform counter according to hardware characteristics and configuration. A Device Manager entry therefore does not prove that HPET is Windows’ active performance-counter source.
Why forcing HPET is not a reliable FPS tweak
On suitable modern systems, Microsoft says TSC-based timing generally has lower access latency and overhead than shared platform timers such as HPET. Forcing a platform clock can consequently be neutral, slower, or useful only for a narrow compatibility problem. It does not accelerate rendering by itself.
That is why “enable HPET for more FPS” is not an evidence-based universal rule. A timing-source change might affect a particular game, driver, audio workload, virtual machine, or legacy application, but results depend on the CPU, motherboard firmware, Windows build, drivers, and workload. Microsoft describes useplatformclock as intended for debugging in its BCDEdit documentation, not as a gaming optimization.
Average FPS is also an incomplete measure. A setting can leave the average unchanged while affecting 1% lows, 0.1% lows, frame-time variance, input latency, or DPC latency. Conversely, a one-run difference can be benchmark noise, a changed driver or game update, or a placebo effect rather than HPET.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy guides still recommend it
Older Windows and hardware combinations sometimes needed explicit timer configuration. Enthusiast guides also bundle useplatformclock, useplatformtick, dynamic-tick switches, timer-resolution utilities, and power-plan changes. Those settings affect different mechanisms, so a reported improvement cannot automatically be assigned to HPET.

System-specific reports can be genuine, but they are not transferable without hardware details, game version, baseline measurements, controlled settings, and repeatable frame-time data. Lenovo’s HPET technical note likewise describes application-dependent counter behavior: some systems may benefit from enforcing a high-resolution timer, while others may see lower DPC latency with HPET disabled.
Check whether Windows is being forced to use a platform clock
Use an elevated Command Prompt or PowerShell. BCDEdit changes require administrator privileges.
- Open Start and type cmd.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
bcdedit /enum {current}
Look for useplatformclock in the currently running Windows boot entry. If the entry is absent, Windows is not explicitly forced to use a platform clock through that value. If it shows Yes, the override is present. Absence does not prove that HPET hardware is disabled; it only means this boot entry has no explicit override. Confirm that {current} is the intended installation on a multi-boot PC. Microsoft documents the identifier and syntax in its BCDEdit reference.
Optional: run a controlled platform-clock test
Do this as a troubleshooting experiment, not as a promised FPS improvement. Before changing boot configuration, keep your BitLocker recovery key available and understand that Microsoft warns some boot-option changes can make a system inoperable. Secure Boot or BitLocker protections may require additional recovery steps.
- Record the current boot configuration with
bcdedit /enum {current}. - Open an elevated Command Prompt.
- Run:
bcdedit /set useplatformclock true
- Restart Windows.
- Test the same game, scene, replay, or benchmark under unchanged settings.
This command forces Windows to use a platform clock as its performance-counter source; it does not promise that the selected timer is specifically HPET on every system. Firmware exposure, processor architecture, virtualization, motherboard implementation, and Windows version all affect the result. Do not combine the test with several other latency tweaks, or you will not know which change mattered.

Measure before deciding
For a useful A/B test, record the following before and after the reboot:
- Windows edition and build; CPU, motherboard, BIOS/UEFI version; GPU and driver version; and game version.
- Resolution, graphics settings, frame cap, VRR, V-Sync, Reflex or Anti-Lag settings, and background applications.
- Several runs through the same map, replay, benchmark, or training scene—not one pass.
- Average FPS, 1% and 0.1% lows, and a frame-time graph.
- Input-latency observations using suitable measurement hardware or software when available.
- DPC-latency data when investigating audio crackling, interrupt problems, or driver-related stutter.
Test both a CPU-limited and GPU-limited scenario if possible. Keep the workload, cap, graphics settings, and background processes identical. Retain the override only if the improvement is repeatable; revert it when FPS falls, lows worsen, frame-time variance increases, input feels less responsive, or system behavior changes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Undo the Windows override
The preferred rollback is to remove the explicit value, then restart:
bcdedit /deletevalue useplatformclock
After reboot, verify with:
bcdedit /enum {current}
The useplatformclock entry should no longer appear. Removing the value does not disable HPET hardware in firmware or remove the Windows device; it simply returns clock selection to the normal, non-overridden behavior. Lenovo documents this rollback and the required restart in its technical note. If Windows reports that the value does not exist, the override may already be absent.
Should you change BIOS or UEFI?
Do not alter firmware merely because a generic tweak list says to. If you are conducting a documented diagnostic test, record the original setting first and consult the manual for the exact motherboard or laptop model. Possible menu families include Advanced, ACPI Configuration, Chipset Configuration, Power Management, and PCI/Device Configuration, but there is no universal path.

Many current consumer systems hide the option or leave it enabled by default. A missing menu is not a fault and is not a reason to flash firmware or use hidden vendor tools. Laptop power-management policies and virtual-machine timer virtualization can also make behavior differ from a desktop’s physical timer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What Device Manager can—and cannot—tell you
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand System devices.
- Find High precision event timer and open Properties to inspect status and driver information.
Disabling that device is not the same as removing a BCD platform-clock override. Its presence does not prove Windows is using HPET, and Device Manager should not be used to disable unrelated system devices. Treat it as a device-status view, not a definitive timing-source diagnostic.
Recovery when something goes wrong
“Access is denied”
Close the window and reopen Command Prompt with Run as administrator.
Performance gets worse
Run bcdedit /deletevalue useplatformclock, restart, and repeat the same benchmark with default settings.
The value is absent
That means the explicit override is not configured in the selected boot entry. It does not establish that HPET hardware is disabled, so do not add the value just to make it appear.

Boot, sleep, audio, or virtualization becomes abnormal
Use Windows Recovery Environment or Startup Settings, revert the BCD change if possible, and keep a current restore point and BitLocker recovery key before experimentation. BCDEdit modifies boot configuration; it is not a harmless cosmetic switch.
The BIOS option cannot be found
Check the exact vendor manual or firmware documentation. Do not substitute unrelated PCI-latency, C-state, dynamic-tick, or timer-resolution changes without separate evidence.
Better first steps for gaming problems
If the goal is smoother play rather than timer experimentation, start with observable causes:
- Check CPU and GPU utilization, temperatures, clocks, and thermal throttling.
- Verify graphics settings, frame caps, VRR, V-Sync, and latency features.
- Use frame-time captures to distinguish a GPU limit from CPU, driver, or background-process stutter.
- Update or roll back a GPU driver when the timing of a problem points to a driver change.
- Investigate DPC or audio-driver problems only when symptoms such as crackling or interrupt-related stutter are present.
- Avoid large bundles of undocumented “latency” tweaks, because they prevent reliable diagnosis.
Bottom line
Leave HPET, BIOS/UEFI timer settings, and Windows clock-selection overrides at their defaults on a stable modern Windows gaming PC. HPET is a timing facility, not a guaranteed FPS enhancer; Windows normally chooses an appropriate source, and Microsoft labels forced platform-clock selection as a debugging option. Use an isolated A/B test only for a specific compatibility or timing problem, measure frame times and latency as well as FPS, and remove the override when it provides no repeatable benefit.
