1Password Review (2026): Is It Worth Paying For?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1Password is worth paying for if you want polished apps across devices, secure sharing, passkeys, and useful family or business controls. It is less compelling if you only need basic password storage, require a permanent free plan, or want every credential—including passkeys—to move easily to another manager. Its security design is strong, but you must safeguard your account password, Secret Key, and recovery information.

US prices and technical requirements below were checked on August 18, 2026; prices can vary by country, tax, billing cycle, promotion, or account history.

What 1Password does

1Password is a subscription password manager, not just a browser autofill tool. Its encrypted vaults can hold passwords and usernames, passkeys, payment cards, identity details, secure notes, software licenses, file attachments, SSH keys, API tokens, and other developer secrets. Apps are available for macOS, iOS, watchOS, Windows, Android, and Linux, alongside browser extensions for Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox, and Brave. See the supported platforms and features.

Beyond storing credentials, its appeal is controlled sharing, account recovery options, security alerts, passkey support, and—on business plans—administration and permissions.

How much does 1Password cost?

The following US prices were listed on 1Password’s pricing page on August 18, 2026. Annual prices shown as monthly equivalents are not necessarily billed month by month. Taxes, regional pricing, promotions, renewal terms, and account history may change the checkout total; check it before subscribing. A 14-day trial is advertised for personal plans, and offers may be restricted to new customers or annual billing.

Plan US price shown What it is for
Individual $2.99/month with annual billing; $3.99/month with monthly billing One person; unlimited devices, password generation, autofill, sharing, and Watchtower alerts
Families $4.49/month with annual billing; $5.99/month with monthly billing Households; up to five invited family members, unlimited shared vaults, and simple admin controls
Teams Starter Pack $24.95/month, annual billing shown Small teams; up to 10 members, shared secrets, role permissions, alerts, and developer tools
Business $8.99 per user/month with annual billing Organizations needing SSO integrations, advanced permissions, Watchtower, and business controls

These figures come from the official US pricing page. Teams Starter Pack is an organizational plan, not a like-for-like alternative to Families: its administrative features and intended use differ.

There is no permanent free consumer plan. If recurring cost is the main obstacle, compare 1Password with a free or lower-cost option before moving your whole vault.

Is 1Password secure?

1Password describes its service as end-to-end encrypted. Its security documentation says vault data is encrypted with AES-256 and protected through Two-Key Derivation using the account password and a unique Secret Key. It also describes Secure Remote Password for protecting data in transit. Encryption reduces the risk of someone reading vault contents, but it does not protect an unlocked, compromised device from malware, phishing, or someone with access to it. Read the 1Password security model.

What the Secret Key means for you

The Secret Key is an account-specific secret used with your account password in the security design. It is not simply a second password or a recovery code. 1Password says it does not keep a copy and cannot recover or reset it. The Secret Key can help protect account data, but losing it alongside access to authorized devices and forgetting the account password can make recovery difficult or impossible, depending on the account and available recovery options. See how the Secret Key works and where to find it.

  • Keep the Emergency Kit and Secret Key in a safe offline location.
  • Do not keep the only copy inside 1Password.
  • Understand whether a family organizer or team administrator can help with recovery under your plan.
  • Use appropriate additional authentication, such as two-factor authentication or a security key, and review authorized devices after losing or replacing one.

Assessments and account protections

1Password publishes information about independent security assessments, including penetration testing and code review. Assessments provide evidence that the service has been examined; they are not a guarantee that no vulnerabilities exist now or will emerge later. See 1Password’s security assessments.

Available protections include two-factor authentication, security keys, recovery codes, device and session management, and passkey-based account unlocking. Hardware security keys are covered in the security-key support documentation; account unlocking with a passkey is explained in the passkey guide. Device and browser security still matter: 1Password’s browser security guidance notes that the browser and its other extensions are part of the trust boundary.

Is 1Password easy to use for everyday logins?

The typical setup is to create an account, save the Emergency Kit, install the apps and browser extension, import existing credentials, then enable autofill. You can generate unique passwords at signup, fill saved logins and one-time codes, and keep other sensitive information in the vault. Exact behavior depends on the site, browser, operating system, app version, and other autofill tools enabled.

  • 【A-Z Tabs for Quick Search 】Our password book comes with alphabetical tabs to help you find the password you need quickly and easily. Alphabetically organized tabs ensure that you can quickly flip to the right section, saving you the time and hassle of searching for your password.
  1. Create an account and store the Emergency Kit and Secret Key somewhere safe offline.
  2. Install the current desktop and mobile apps, then add the browser extension for a supported browser.
  3. Import existing passwords and verify that important logins, notes, and other needed fields arrived correctly.
  4. Start by replacing reused passwords on high-value accounts such as email, banking, cloud storage, and your primary Apple, Google, or Microsoft account.
  5. Test autofill, password generation, one-time codes, passkey prompts, and multiple accounts on the same website.
  6. Review Watchtower alerts, then remove duplicate browser-saved passwords only after confirming the migration works.

Browser extensions require recent versions: Chrome 128 or later, Firefox 128 or later, Edge 128 or later, Brave 1.69.0 or later, and Safari 18.6 or later on macOS Ventura 13 or later, according to the system requirements checked August 18, 2026. Requirements can change. If another manager or browser autofill is still active, test before switching off its prompts; competing autofill systems can cause duplicate or incorrect suggestions.

Watchtower alerts users to issues such as compromised websites, weak passwords, and vulnerable credentials. It does not change a password or secure a website for you, and it is not antivirus software, identity-theft insurance, or a guarantee that every breach will be detected. You still need to take action on the affected account.

What should you know about passkeys?

“Supports passkeys” describes several distinct things: storing website passkeys in 1Password, using those passkeys to sign in to websites, using a passkey to unlock your 1Password account, and exporting passkeys if you leave. These capabilities are not interchangeable, and website, operating-system, browser, and app support all matter.

  • Saving and using passkeys requires 1Password 8 or later; the requirements page lists iOS 18 or later for iOS passkey functionality.
  • Passkey-based account unlocking has platform-specific protections. 1Password documents device-key hardware protection on Apple-silicon or T2 Macs, iOS devices with Touch ID or Face ID, and Android devices with biometric unlock. The same protection is not available in the same way on Windows, Linux, the browser extension, or 1Password.com. See passkey security details.
  • Export is a separate issue: passkey export is available through 1Password for iOS and Android under documented requirements, while desktop exports do not currently export passkeys. Leaving from desktop may mean creating replacement passkeys on individual websites.

Check the current system requirements and export documentation before relying on a particular passkey workflow.

Are family sharing and recovery useful?

Families is designed for household sharing rather than giving one person several copies of an Individual account. Each person can keep a private vault, while members can use shared vaults for things such as household accounts, payment details, or important notes. The plan listing includes up to five invited family members and unlimited shared vaults.

Before sharing an item, check whether it belongs in a private or shared vault and who can see it. Sharing a single login may be convenient, but it gives several people the same credential and makes it harder to attribute activity or revoke access cleanly. Separate accounts with appropriately limited shared access are preferable when possible. Family organizers may be able to help recover members, but recovery depends on the plan and circumstances; review the current rules rather than assuming every lockout is reversible.

Families is less suitable if you need more than the advertised five invited members. For guests, caregivers, or contractors, decide what access they need and for how long instead of sharing an entire vault. See the Families plan details.

What do the business plans add?

Teams Starter Pack

At the listed US price of $24.95 per month with annual billing shown, Teams Starter Pack covers up to 10 members. Its role permissions, shared secrets, alerts, and developer tools make it relevant to a small organization that needs administration, rather than an informal household group.

Business

The listed US annual-billing price is $8.99 per user per month. 1Password identifies integrations with providers including Okta, Microsoft Entra ID, OneLogin, and Duo, plus role-based permissions, Watchtower, developer tools, and business administration. Organizations should check whether ordinary Business features meet their identity, reporting, compliance, and privileged-access requirements before choosing a plan. Larger or more specialized environments may need a formal enterprise product.

Plan for permissions, offboarding, and export

Assign vault access by role and need, use individual accounts rather than a shared team login, and decide how to revoke access during offboarding. For SSO-enabled accounts, there is a material exit-planning constraint: 1Password says accounts using Unlock with SSO cannot currently export data. An administrator can turn off Unlock with SSO to allow export. This matters for offboarding, incident response, mergers, and vendor-exit planning; review the Unlock with SSO documentation before deployment.

Team vault permissions and the ability to designate vaults as safe for travel are described in 1Password’s team vault guide.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How do migration and export work?

Migration deserves a test before you delete old vaults or turn off a previous manager. Passwords may transfer while custom fields, shared structures, or passkeys do not. 1Password requires app version 8.12 or later for import/export, according to its system requirements checked August 18, 2026. The documented import path from Bitwarden is described in 1Password’s Bitwarden import guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1Password warns that exported files are plaintext. Its CSV export has fewer fields than .1pux; CSV omits some data, including linked items, linked apps, custom fields, security questions, and backup codes. Desktop exports do not currently include passkeys. iOS and Android support passkey export through Credential Exchange under the documented requirements, and some iOS export functionality requires iOS or iPadOS 26 or later. Details are in Export your data.

  1. Open and unlock the relevant 1Password app, choose the account or vault, and select the export control.
  2. Authenticate with the account password and choose a format appropriate to the destination.
  3. Save the export locally, import it into the destination manager, and verify important logins and fields.
  4. Securely delete the plaintext export after confirming the import; do not email it, upload it to cloud storage, or leave it in Downloads.
  5. If passkeys are involved, confirm which ones transferred and recreate any that did not on their websites.

What are the main drawbacks?

  • Subscription requirement: there is no permanent free consumer plan, so a basic user may not get enough value from the recurring cost.
  • Recovery responsibility: the Secret Key model makes secure recordkeeping important; losing the key and other access paths can become a serious lockout issue.
  • Portability gaps: plaintext export requires careful handling, CSV is limited, desktop passkey export is unavailable, and SSO can block business export until an administrator changes the setting.
  • Browser dependence: autofill depends on a supported browser and its extension environment; other extensions and local malware remain relevant risks.
  • Older-device limits: unsupported operating systems or app versions can prevent current features, including passkey and import/export workflows. 1Password 8 requires macOS Monterey 12 or later, Windows 10 64-bit or later, and Linux with a 64-bit x86 or ARM processor and glibc 2.31 or later, with supported distributions listed by 1Password. Check the current requirements before buying for older hardware.
  • Not every household needs its depth: if you only need basic credentials in one ecosystem, a built-in password manager may be simpler.

How does 1Password compare with alternatives?

Alternative Consider it if Main trade-off to investigate
Bitwarden You want a free personal option, lower-cost choices, or open-source positioning. Compare the interface, sharing, family recovery, and passkey workflows you actually need.
Proton Pass You already use Proton services or want a privacy-focused ecosystem. Compare sharing, business administration, portability, and platform experience by plan.
Dashlane You want a polished consumer suite and are considering bundled security features. Compare current plan limits, pricing, family allowances, and passkey portability. 1Password documents Credential Exchange imports from mobile devices for Dashlane.
KeePassXC You want a local, open-source vault without a required subscription and are comfortable managing files and backups. You take on more responsibility for synchronization, recovery, sharing, and support.
Apple Passwords, Google Password Manager, or Microsoft Edge password manager You mainly use one platform or browser and want basic storage built in. Compare portability, sharing, secure notes, travel controls, and administration; built-in does not mean unsafe by default.

Independent reviews have praised 1Password’s security architecture, usability, family features, Travel Mode, and passkeys, but these are editorial evaluations rather than guarantees. For additional context, see Security.org’s review, WIRED’s review, and Security.org’s Proton Pass comparison. Plan features and prices change, so use official product pages for current purchasing details.

Who should buy 1Password?

  • One person: choose Individual if you value polished cross-device apps, secure notes, passkeys, and Watchtower enough to justify a subscription.
  • A household: Families is a stronger fit when members will actively use private and shared vaults and benefit from organizer recovery.
  • A small team: consider Teams Starter Pack if shared secrets, role permissions, and administration are useful; it is not a substitute for a consumer family plan.
  • A business: evaluate Business for SSO integrations and administrative controls, but confirm export, reporting, compliance, and offboarding requirements before rollout.
  • A technical, portability-focused user: compare Bitwarden or KeePassXC if free or open-source options and local control matter more than 1Password’s product polish.
  • A platform-focused casual user: Apple, Google, or Microsoft’s built-in manager may be adequate if you do not need 1Password’s broader sharing and vault features.

For a single user or family who will use the sharing, recovery, passkey, and cross-device features, 1Password’s premium is easier to justify than for someone who only needs basic login storage. The deciding question is whether its broader vault and administration tools solve a real need—and whether you are prepared to manage the Secret Key and export limitations.
