To edit a photo before sharing it on Instagram, start a Post, choose the photo, frame it, then use a filter or the manual editing controls before tapping Share. You can usually change a post’s caption, location, tags, and alt text later, but Instagram does not generally let you replace or visually edit the photo after it is published. Button names and available controls can vary by app version, account, device, and post type.
How to edit a photo on Instagram
- Open Instagram and tap + or Create, then choose Post.
- Select a photo from your camera roll. If you want a carousel, select multiple items.
- On the framing screen, use the crop or expand control if it appears. Pinch to change how much of the image fits, and drag to position the subject.
- Tap Next. Choose a filter, or open Edit for manual adjustments. The first screen typically handles framing; filters and adjustments are usually on the next screen.
- Tap Next again. Add a caption, location, tags, and accessibility text as needed.
- Review the final preview, then tap Share.
Instagram’s post-sharing help and editing and filters guidance describe editing and cropping as part of the pre-sharing workflow. If a label or icon is not where expected, look for the equivalent control rather than assuming every phone has the same layout.
How to crop a photo without cutting off the subject
Cropping removes part of the original image; changing how the image fits the frame can show more or less of it without changing the original file. The shape of that frame is its aspect ratio. Instagram documents supported photo ratios from 1.91:1 to 3:4; an image outside that range may be cropped to fit. See Instagram’s photo-resolution guidance.
- Use the crop or expand control on the initial preview if available, then pinch and drag to frame the picture.
- Keep faces, product edges, and text away from the borders so they are not clipped in the post preview or on different screens.
- Check the crop again before sharing, especially if you have edited or repositioned the image.
- For a carousel, choose the orientation with all its images in mind: Instagram says the selected orientation applies to every item in that post.
What Instagram’s manual editing controls do
Instagram may show some or all of these controls; names, order, and availability can vary. Make one change at a time and check the whole image, not just the area under a slider.

A practical order is to crop and straighten first, correct brightness and contrast, adjust highlights or shadows, then refine warmth and saturation. Add a filter only if it improves the result. Preview the image at full size before sharing.
Apply or reduce a filter
Swipe through the filter row and tap a filter to preview it. Where the app offers an intensity control, tap the selected filter again and reduce its strength if the effect is too strong. Choose Normal or remove the filter for an unfiltered image. Filter controls may differ across versions. Meta has also described changes to Instagram’s photo and carousel creation tools in its creator update.

How to edit several photos in a carousel
Instagram’s help guidance says one carousel can contain up to 10 photos and videos. Before publishing, you can reorder the items and adjust their crops; where the interface permits, you can apply a filter to all items or edit them individually. One caption and location apply to the post, while accounts can be tagged on individual items. Instagram says the orientation selected for a carousel affects all its items.
After publishing, Instagram says you cannot reorder, edit, or delete individual parts of a shared carousel; you can delete the entire post. Check each crop and the sequence before sharing. The details are in Instagram’s carousel guidance.

How to edit a photo for an Instagram Story
Stories use a separate composer, so their editing tools are not identical to the Feed-post editor.
- Tap + or open the Story composer, then choose a photo from your camera roll.
- Resize or reposition it on the Story canvas.
- Add text, stickers, drawings, music, filters, or effects using the available Story controls.
- Share to Your Story, Close Friends, or send it privately.
Some Story experiences may offer Meta AI image-editing features to add, remove, or change elements. Availability and controls depend on rollout and may vary by region, account, device, and language; they are optional, not a standard step. What you can change after publishing
Editing a published post usually changes its accompanying information, not the photo itself. Instagram does not provide a general way to replace a Feed post’s image or redo its crop, filter, brightness, or other visual edits.

If the image itself is wrong, save or export a corrected copy and publish it as a new post; delete or archive the original if appropriate. A replacement post will not carry over the original post’s likes, comments, or URL.

How to add or edit alt text
Alt text is a description for people using screen readers, not a visual change to the photo. Instagram’s accessibility guidance explains how to add it before sharing and edit it later.
Before sharing
- Finish selecting and editing the image, then continue to the final post screen.
- Open Accessibility and enter a concise, useful description of the image.
- Return to the post screen and share.
After sharing
- Open the post and its options, then choose Edit.
- Open Accessibility and change the alt text.
- Tap Done or the equivalent save control shown in your app.
How to keep Instagram from reducing photo quality
Instagram says supported photos are displayed at up to 1,080 pixels wide: it preserves images between 320 and 1,080 pixels wide when their ratio is supported and sizes larger images down to 1,080 pixels wide. Its guidance recommends an image at least 1,080 pixels wide and an aspect ratio within the supported range. These figures describe Instagram’s published display and upload guidance, not a guarantee that every screen will render identically.
- Start with the original camera file when possible; avoid screenshots and copies repeatedly saved through other apps.
- If you edit elsewhere, export one clean copy at a suitable quality rather than repeatedly recompressing a JPEG.
- Check the Instagram preview for changes in brightness, color, or crop before sharing. HDR or wide-color content, display differences, and processing can make an upload appear different from the gallery original.
- Keep important subjects and text inside the frame rather than near its edges.
- If uploads look abnormal, use a reliable connection and update Instagram; the resolution guidance recommends the latest app version for best-resolution uploads.
What to do if editing controls are missing
- Check that you are editing before sharing. The post editor for an already-published image generally does not change its pixels.
- Confirm you chose Post if you want the Feed editor; Story and other content composers have different controls.
- Update Instagram, close and reopen it, and check its permission to access the relevant photos.
- Try one image rather than a carousel to see whether the selection changes which controls appear.
- Try a copy saved in a common format such as JPEG, then test on Wi-Fi or another reliable connection.
- If controls are missing only on one account, the difference may be an account-level rollout or a temporary bug rather than a universal app rule.
- As a fallback, make the visual edits in your phone’s Photos or Gallery editor, or another photo editor, then upload the finished image.
When to use Instagram or another editor
Instagram is usually enough for a quick crop, filter, or basic exposure and color correction, especially when you are adding Story-native stickers or text. Use a phone editor or a dedicated app when you need more precise control, repeatable presets, batch edits, RAW development, object removal, or a carefully prepared product image. External tools add an export step and can introduce compression if you save the file repeatedly. They are optional; a basic Instagram edit does not require paid software.
