Malwarebytes Tray App Appears in Alt+Tab: Why It Happens and How to Fix It

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If “Malwarebytes Tray Application” appears as a blank or non-responsive item in Windows Alt+Tab, the name alone does not mean your computer is infected. Malwarebytes documented this as a side effect of version 3.2.2 in September 2017. Current Malwarebytes documentation does not confirm that the same behavior remains a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 defect, so verify the file and version before changing protection settings.

What you are actually seeing

Windows can show several Malwarebytes-related components that are easy to confuse:

  • Alt+Tab entry: the historical report described an empty “Malwarebytes Tray Application” item that did nothing when selected.
  • Notification-area icon: the Malwarebytes icon near the clock opens the tray dashboard, where you can open, hide, update, scan, or quit the app.
  • Main Malwarebytes window: this is the normal desktop interface and may appear separately from the tray component.
  • Task Manager processes: background Malwarebytes processes can be listed even when no main window is open.
  • Notifications: a security alert, renewal message, or promotional notification can look like an application window but is a different event.

The historical blank-entry description is recorded in the Super User report.

Why the Alt+Tab entry appeared

In a September 2017 forum thread, Malwarebytes staff explained that version 3.2.2 changed how the tray component operated after the earlier tray icon was using too many resources. The change unintentionally exposed the tray component as an application in Windows’ window switcher. Engineers were investigating how to keep the resource improvement without showing the component in Alt+Tab. That explanation describes a window-registration and user-interface side effect, not a security warning or evidence of malicious activity. See the Malwarebytes forum discussion.

Is it malware?

A process name is not proof of legitimacy. Treat a genuine, correctly installed and digitally signed Malwarebytes file as a normal security component, but verify it rather than assuming every similarly named executable is safe.

  1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
  2. Find the Malwarebytes-related process, right-click it, and choose Open file location.
  3. Check that the file is inside the expected Malwarebytes installation directory, not a temporary folder, Downloads, an unusual user-profile path, or a randomly named directory.
  4. Right-click the file, select Properties, open Digital Signatures, and verify that the signer is Malwarebytes.
  5. Run a Malwarebytes scan. If the path or signature is suspicious, also scan with Windows Security and contact Malwarebytes support.

Do not add an unverified file to the Allow list merely because its name contains “Malwarebytes.” Malwarebytes says Allow-list entries should be used only when you are confident that the item is harmless: Allow or block items using the Malwarebytes Allow list.

Does this still affect Malwarebytes in 2026?

The confirmed report concerns Malwarebytes 3.2.2 in 2017. Malwarebytes’ current Help Center pages, updated in June and July 2026, document the tray dashboard, repair, and clean-reinstall tools but do not list the old Alt+Tab behavior as a current known issue. No current-version reproduction is established here.

When asking for support, record your Malwarebytes version, Windows edition and build, whether the Alt+Tab item is blank or opens a real window, the executable path and signer, and whether the problem began after an update or reinstall.

Fixes to try, in order

1. Update Malwarebytes and Windows

Open the Malwarebytes tray dashboard and use its Update control, then run Windows Update. Updating is sensible maintenance, but the available documentation does not prove that a current update removes this Alt+Tab entry.

Tray controls are documented in Using the tray menu dashboard on Windows devices.

2. Quit and relaunch Malwarebytes

  1. Click the ^ arrow beside the clock to show hidden notification icons.
  2. Right-click the Malwarebytes icon and choose Quit Malwarebytes.
  3. Start Malwarebytes again from the Start menu or a desktop shortcut.

Quitting temporarily stops Malwarebytes protection. Reopen it or restart Windows immediately afterward if you use real-time protection. Malwarebytes gives the same general caution when asking users to quit the app for interference testing: Malwarebytes interfering with software on Windows devices.

3. Restart Windows

A restart can clear a stale window registration or a tray component that did not close correctly. It is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Test without window and overlay utilities

Temporarily exit virtual-desktop tools, window managers, display-management utilities, shell customizers, game overlays, and recording software. The historical forum discussion mentioned Sysinternals Desktops as a possible way background processes could appear in Alt+Tab, but did not establish it as the cause. Restore each utility after testing so you can identify any interaction.

5. Repair the installation

Use the official Malwarebytes Support Tool when ordinary restart and updating do not help. Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8 is required. The Repair option removes and reinstalls Malwarebytes while preserving configurations and activation information.

Should you disable Malwarebytes at startup?

User type Recommendation Reason
Free or on-demand user Possible diagnostic option If you intentionally use Malwarebytes only for manual scans, disabling startup may remove its background convenience, but it is not a confirmed fix.
Premium or real-time protection user Do not disable startup just to clean up Alt+Tab Malwarebytes Premium Security is designed to provide ongoing real-time protection.
Business-managed device Follow company policy Ask your administrator before changing startup or security controls.

Malwarebytes positions its free product as an on-demand cleanup tool and Premium as ongoing protection: Malwarebytes Free and Malwarebytes Premium. If you use startup disabling as a test, restore it afterward through your normal Windows startup settings.

Can you close the entry directly?

If Alt+Tab selects a real focused window, try Alt+F4, or use Windows+Tab to locate it. Task Manager can terminate a clearly identified stuck Malwarebytes process, but do not stop protection services as a first-line fix. The historical forum also described moving the tray window to another virtual desktop; that was a user workaround, not a current Malwarebytes-supported solution.

When the symptoms point elsewhere

Blank tray entry plus the normal Malwarebytes window

That combination closely matches the historical report in which the tray component and main interface were separate windows or processes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Malwarebytes window opens repeatedly

Repeated pop-ups are not the same symptom as a blank Alt+Tab item. Check startup settings, notifications, scheduled scans, renewal messages, and possible installation damage.

The entry disappears when Malwarebytes is quit

That suggests a Malwarebytes component or an interaction with Windows, but it does not prove the installation is defective. Restore protection after testing.

You run another antivirus

Malwarebytes warns that security-product conflicts can cause blocked applications, disabled protection, connectivity problems, or blue screens. Check compatibility before disabling or uninstalling either product: Malwarebytes and other antivirus software.

What not to do

  • Do not delete Malwarebytes executables or edit the registry based on an old workaround.
  • Do not permanently disable real-time protection to hide an interface artifact.
  • Do not allow-list an executable before checking its path and signature.
  • Do not assume a similarly named process is legitimate without verification.
  • Do not claim that a particular later version fixed the issue unless Malwarebytes documents that release.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is “Malwarebytes Tray Application” automatically a virus?

No. The name was used by a genuine Malwarebytes tray component, including the documented 3.2.2 behavior. Verify the executable path and Malwarebytes digital signature before deciding it is safe.

Does this prove Windows 11 has a Malwarebytes bug?

No. The strongest evidence is from Malwarebytes 3.2.2 in 2017. Current documentation does not confirm the behavior as a Windows 10 or Windows 11 defect.

Can I remove the Alt+Tab item without uninstalling Malwarebytes?

Try updating, quitting and relaunching Malwarebytes, restarting Windows, and testing without window-management or overlay utilities. Repair is the next official step if those checks fail.

Why do I see two Malwarebytes entries?

The tray component and the main Malwarebytes interface can be separate windows or processes, especially in the historical behavior. A second entry should still be checked by path and signature.

The Bottom Line

A blank, genuine Malwarebytes tray entry in Alt+Tab is best treated as a version-specific window-management issue, not automatic evidence of malware. Verify the file first, then update, relaunch, restart, repair, and clean-reinstall only as needed. Do not sacrifice real-time protection solely to remove an unverified interface artifact.
