At CES 2025 in January, Oshkosh Corporation presented a portfolio of specialty-vehicle technologies rather than a single consumer electric vehicle. The display combined the all-electric McNeilus Volterra ZFL refuse truck, AI-assisted collection and recycling systems, an autonomous refuse-collection robot, and Collision Avoidance Mitigation System (CAMS) for roadside workers and first responders. Oshkosh framed the package around quieter operation, cleaner work and improved safety, but the announcement mixed production-intent vehicles with demonstrations and development concepts.

The practical question for a fleet is not whether the technology sounds advanced. It is whether a specific route, depot, workforce and operating environment can support it.

What Oshkosh actually showed at CES 2025

Oshkosh’s CES program covered neighborhood refuse and recycling, emergency response, last-mile delivery, airport operations, construction sites and connected fleet management. The company’s stated thesis was that advanced systems should improve difficult everyday work without forcing operators into consumer-style vehicles or interfaces. Its announcement grouped electrification, artificial intelligence, autonomy and connectivity under that goal. Oshkosh’s CES 2025 announcement does not mean every displayed system was available for immediate purchase.

Technology Intended job What is established
McNeilus Volterra ZFL Front-loader refuse and recycling collection Oshkosh described it as an all-electric vehicle designed for a full day on one charge, with driver assistance and telematics.
AI bin detection and electric arm Identify and service containers faster Company-described camera and machine-learning assistance; the arm claim is up to 45 minutes saved per day.
AI contamination detection Spot unwanted material in recycling On-vehicle, edge-based processing was presented; accuracy rates were not disclosed.
Autonomous refuse robot On-demand household refuse collection Shown as a concept or development system; no public purchase process or deployment scope was established.
CAMS Warn roadside and emergency crews of approaching vehicles AI-enabled sensing, cameras and radar provide warnings and video recording; it is not described as automatic braking.

Why specialty vehicles are a harder EV problem

A refuse truck does not have a passenger-car duty cycle. It starts and stops repeatedly, carries heavy payloads, runs compaction and lifting equipment, and may spend much of a shift moving slowly through dense neighborhoods. Weather, hills, traffic, auxiliary loads and route changes all affect energy use. Consequently, “full day on a single charge” is an operating claim, not a universal range rating.

  • 1 forward speed, push button drive

Electrification also includes the depot. A buyer must plan chargers, utility capacity, demand management, backup procedures, high-voltage service capability and vehicle availability while charging. Battery-electric operation can remove tailpipe emissions and reduce noise at the vehicle, but total environmental results also depend on manufacturing, electricity supply and end-of-life handling.

McNeilus Volterra ZFL: the electric front-loader

The McNeilus Volterra ZFL is a purpose-built, all-electric front-loader for refuse and recycling work. Oshkosh said it was designed for a full day’s work on one charge and included an ergonomic layout, advanced driver-assistance technology and telematics for fleet management. Those are first-party descriptions in the CES announcement, not an independently verified route test.

Before specifying the truck, a fleet should model its own duty cycle: loaded miles, stops per hour, lift and compaction activity, seasonal temperatures, terrain, payload and reserve policy. The truck is only one part of the system; charger installation, electrical upgrades, technician training, parts support and software integration can determine uptime as much as battery capacity.

AI-assisted collection: finding the right bin and moving it

Bin detection workflow

  1. Cameras and machine-learning software identify collection bins and help the operator recognize the intended target.
  2. The operator confirms the target and activates the electric arm with a button.
  3. The arm lifts and services the container.
  4. Vehicle data and telematics can be used for fleet monitoring and route analysis.

Oshkosh said this approach is intended to reduce human error and speed collection. The announcement does not provide accuracy, false-detection or environmental-performance rates. Procurement demonstrations should therefore include darkness, rain, snow, glare, occluded bins, damaged containers, several bins placed together and bins in narrow or cluttered alleys. Buyers should also ask whether a missed detection merely prompts the operator or prevents the arm from operating, and how route imagery is retained and governed.

Electrified refuse arm

Oshkosh said its electrified collection arm could save up to 45 minutes per day and reduce noise, potentially allowing a truck to serve more households. “Up to” is a maximum company claim, not an independently measured average. Actual savings will depend on bin placement, traffic, route design, operator technique, payload and how much time is removed from engine or hydraulic operation.

Quieter equipment can make early-morning collection more acceptable in neighborhoods. It can also remove an audible cue that pedestrians associate with a working truck, increasing the importance of lighting, mirrors, cameras, safe speeds and deliberate operator training.

AI contamination detection for recycling

The recycling system shown by Oshkosh uses on-vehicle, edge-based processing to identify contamination in real time. Processing locally can reduce latency and dependence on a continuous cloud connection, while limiting the amount of raw imagery that must be uploaded. An alert is useful only if it is understandable and actionable while the vehicle is moving.

Detection does not by itself fix consumer sorting, changing material markets or a processor’s capacity. A recycling operator should verify which materials the model recognizes, how local contamination rules are represented, what false-positive and false-negative rates are, how models are updated, and whether results feed customer education or route-level analytics. The CES material does not establish accuracy across all municipal recycling streams.

The autonomous refuse robot

Oshkosh also presented an autonomous robot intended to collect refuse on demand and reduce the burden of weekly household chores. The available announcement describes the purpose, not a production launch. It does not establish pricing, operating geography, autonomy level, supervision staffing or a public ordering process.

A serious pilot would need clear answers about its operating domain: private property, sidewalks, roads or controlled communities. Operators must define geofencing, remote supervision, manual recovery, blocked-route handling, interactions with pedestrians, pets and bicycles, theft and vandalism protection, weather limits, insurance and accessibility compliance. The business model may supplement conventional collection rather than eliminate drivers, shifting work toward remote supervisors and field recovery crews.

CAMS: warning roadside workers about approaching traffic

Oshkosh’s Collision Avoidance Mitigation System is aimed at first responders and service workers operating beside live traffic. The company describes cameras, AI-enabled sensing and radar that assess the trajectory, speed and proximity of approaching vehicles relative to a parked response vehicle. It can provide advance warning and continuously record video that may assist accident reconstruction and insurance documentation. Oshkosh’s active-safety overview places this work alongside LiDAR, radar, cameras, GPS, machine learning and vehicle-to-vehicle alerts.

A related description reports a two-to-three-second warning figure; that should be treated as an attributed description, not a guaranteed stopping window. Warning time varies with approach speed, visibility, road geometry, sensor thresholds and obstructions. CAMS is a warning and situational-awareness system, not proof that the vehicle will brake or prevent a crash.

Agencies should test performance in darkness, rain, snow and glare; measure false alarms and missed detections; define video retention and access; and integrate alerts with cones, lighting, high-visibility clothing, traffic-control plans and safe vehicle positioning. Automation supplements those controls rather than replacing them.

How the CES display fits Oshkosh’s wider portfolio

Oshkosh’s broader materials describe battery-electric, hybrid, low-emission and conventional products across business lines. The portfolio includes the Pierce Volterra Pumper, which the company described as the first electric fire truck in service in North America and as using a parallel-electric drivetrain with onboard charging infrastructure. The Striker Volterra airport rescue and firefighting vehicle was described as delivering 28% better acceleration when fully loaded. An electric front-discharge concrete-placement prototype targeted lower noise, energy use and emissions and a battery life of at least 10 years. These are separate products or prototypes, not additional CES 2025 Volterra ZFL launch variants. Oshkosh’s 2025 EV portfolio material provides that context.

The company’s defense electrification work likewise includes battery-electric and internal-combustion versions of its Next Generation Delivery Vehicle family and ProPulse hybrid diesel-electric systems. A hybrid system is not a battery-electric vehicle, and defense procurement products should not be conflated with municipal refuse equipment. Oshkosh Defense’s electrification page distinguishes those programs.

Buyer checklist: what to verify before a pilot

For refuse fleets

  • Route-level energy model covering payload, stops, weather, hills and auxiliary equipment.
  • Charger power, depot construction, utility coordination and backup charging.
  • High-voltage maintenance training, parts availability and service response times.
  • Integration with existing telematics, dispatch and billing systems.
  • Noise rules, collection-hour restrictions and pedestrian-safety procedures.
  • Total cost of ownership, including infrastructure and downtime rather than vehicle price alone.

For recycling operations

  • Recognized material categories and the local processor’s contamination definitions.
  • Measured false-positive and false-negative rates in local weather and lighting.
  • Alert design that remains understandable while driving.
  • Data location, retention, ownership and model-update procedures.

For first responders

  • Detection range, warning latency and performance with blocked or dirty sensors.
  • Compatibility with warning lights, cones and traffic-control protocols.
  • Video-storage policy, cybersecurity and access during investigations.
  • Human-factors testing, driver alerts and procedures when communications fail.

For autonomous-service pilots

  • Legal operating domain, geofencing, accessibility and vulnerable-road-user protection.
  • Remote-supervision staffing, manual override and field-recovery plans.
  • Insurance, liability, cybersecurity and software-update responsibilities.
  • Weather, vandalism, theft and blocked-route contingencies.

Bottom line

Oshkosh’s CES 2025 significance was its attempt to apply electrification and AI to specialized work where quiet operation, worker safety, uptime and productivity matter more than passenger-EV acceleration or headline range. The Volterra ZFL is the clearest production-oriented vehicle in the display; bin detection, the electric arm and contamination detection are operational-assistance technologies; CAMS is an alerting system; and the autonomous refuse robot should be treated as a development concept unless Oshkosh provides separate availability details. Fleet buyers should evaluate each claim against route data, infrastructure, service capability, measured sensor performance and accountability requirements.
