Windows 11 version 25H2 is a real annual release, but it is not a traditional feature-packed upgrade. Microsoft says 25H2 shares its servicing branch with 24H2 and packages much of the same code through a small enablement update. The meaningful changes are narrower: an Enterprise and Education policy for removing selected inbox apps, the retirement of legacy PowerShell 2.0 and WMIC components, and a longer support window.
For most 24H2 users, the decision is therefore about support and compatibility—not a redesigned desktop or guaranteed performance gains.
What Windows 11 25H2 is
Windows 11 25H2 became generally available on September 30, 2025. It uses the same shared servicing branch as Windows 11 24H2: 24H2 is in the 26100 build family, while 25H2 is identified by build 26200. Microsoft describes the move from 24H2 as an enablement-package installation rather than a full operating-system replacement. Most of the underlying 25H2 code can already be present on a fully updated 24H2 PC, so the version switch is comparatively small and quick.
Microsoft’s official overview is available at What’s new in Windows 11 version 25H2. Release availability was announced by Microsoft in its Windows 11 2025 Update post.

What “no new features” actually means
“No new features” is an easy headline but an inaccurate literal description. Microsoft’s point is that 25H2 has few or no major features exclusive to the version’s launch. Windows 11 now uses a continuous-innovation model in which capabilities arrive through monthly preview and security updates. A feature documented as part of 25H2 may already have reached 24H2 users through those cumulative updates.
That means three different things should not be conflated:
- No major 25H2-exclusive launch feature: there is no conventional annual redesign comparable to a large historical Windows upgrade.
- No features for Windows users: false. Monthly servicing continues to deliver fixes and capabilities to supported releases.
- No code or behavior changes: false. Components can be enabled, removed, or changed even when the version transition is small.
Someone moving from an older Windows release can see more accumulated changes because several servicing cycles arrive together. A fully updated 24H2 machine may already have much of what Microsoft associates with 25H2 without changing its version number.
What is genuinely notable in 25H2
Enterprise and Education app-removal policy
Microsoft lists a policy-based capability for removing selected preinstalled Microsoft Store apps in Windows 11 Enterprise and Education. Examples include Microsoft Clipchamp, Media Player, and Microsoft Teams, subject to Microsoft’s supported policy configuration. The policy is intended to keep removed inbox apps from being automatically restored during provisioning or servicing.

This is an administrative control, not a new consumer-facing debloat button. It does not give Windows 11 Home users a general mechanism to remove every bundled app, and availability depends on edition and policy configuration.
Features carried forward from the 24H2 servicing cycle
Some capabilities described in 25H2 documentation were delivered previously to 24H2 through monthly updates. Their appearance in the 25H2 release does not prove that they first appeared on September 30, 2025. Microsoft’s version 25H2 documentation should be read alongside the update history for the specific build installed on a device.
What 25H2 removes or retires
| Component | 25H2 status | Who should care | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows PowerShell 2.0 | Removed | Legacy scripts, installers, and management tools that explicitly require version 2.0 | Update the script or tool and test it with Windows PowerShell 5.1 or separately installed PowerShell 7 |
| WMIC.exe | Uninstalled during the 25H2 transition; temporary Feature on Demand availability remains documented | Inventory, diagnostics, deployment, and batch scripts calling wmic.exe |
Migrate to PowerShell, WMI APIs, or another supported management method |
| Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) | Remains available | Administrators and developers using the underlying management platform | No migration from WMI itself is required |
Windows PowerShell 2.0 is not all PowerShell
Windows PowerShell 2.0 is a legacy engine and optional component. Its removal does not remove Windows PowerShell 5.1, and it does not remove modern PowerShell 7.x, which is installed and maintained separately. A program that merely says “PowerShell” is not necessarily dependent on version 2.0; the dependency must be checked.

WMIC is being retired in stages
WMIC is the command-line wrapper for WMI, not WMI itself. Microsoft says WMIC was disabled by default in Windows 11 23H2 and 24H2 but remained installable as a Feature on Demand. Upgrading an existing installation to 25H2 uninstalls WMIC. Microsoft’s current guidance says it can still be re-added as a Feature on Demand in 25H2, while a subsequent Windows feature update is scheduled to remove it completely and end that option.
Therefore, “25H2 removes WMIC” is directionally correct for an upgrade, but “WMIC can never be reinstalled on any 25H2 system” is too strong under the documented staged-retirement plan. See Microsoft’s WMIC removal and migration guidance.
Scripts that may break—and practical replacements
Audit batch files, imaging packages, repair tools, and inventory agents for commands such as:
wmic computersystem get model
wmic bios get serialnumber
wmic os get Caption,Version
wmic process list brief
Representative PowerShell replacements are:
Get-CimInstance Win32_ComputerSystem |
Select-Object Manufacturer, Model
Get-CimInstance Win32_BIOS |
Select-Object SerialNumber
Get-CimInstance Win32_OperatingSystem |
Select-Object Caption, Version
Get-CimInstance Win32_Process |
Select-Object Name, ProcessId
These are not guaranteed one-to-one translations for every WMIC command. Custom aliases, formatted output, remote queries, return codes, error handling, and unusual switches may require a rewrite and test. Microsoft recommends moving to PowerShell or another supported WMI-compatible method rather than building new automation around WMIC.

The regular expression is case-insensitive by default in typical PowerShell use and catches both wmic and wmic.exe. Search deployment packages and vendor tools as well as source-controlled scripts.
Do not confuse 25H2 removals with 24H2 removals
Several high-profile removals belong to Windows 11 24H2 documentation, not to a new 25H2 purge. Microsoft lists NTLMv1, WordPad, its AllJoyn implementation, and Windows Mixed Reality among 24H2 removals. Windows PowerShell 2.0 was also removed from 24H2 beginning in August 2025. Assigning all of those changes to 25H2 gives a misleading picture of the release.
The 25H2 transition is narrower: legacy administrative components are the main compatibility concern, while WMI remains available.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does 25H2 improve performance?
There is no sound basis for promising faster CPUs, better gaming, longer battery life, or higher graphics performance simply because the version changes from 24H2 to 25H2. Both releases share the platform and servicing branch. A particular monthly update, device driver, firmware revision, or application update can change performance, but that is different from a guaranteed version-level gain.

Early benchmark coverage found no meaningful performance advantage over 24H2, although that was limited testing rather than a universal guarantee. See Tom’s Hardware’s early 25H2 testing.
Why upgrade if the feature list is small?
Support dates are the strongest reason
Microsoft’s lifecycle information current on August 18, 2026 gives 25H2 a later update deadline:
| Edition family | 24H2 support ends | 25H2 support ends |
|---|---|---|
| Home, Pro, Pro Education, Pro for Workstations | October 13, 2026 | October 12, 2027 |
| Enterprise and Education | October 12, 2027 | October 10, 2028 |
For consumer editions, moving to 25H2 can therefore add roughly a year of supported updates without a major platform redesign. Verify edition-specific status in Microsoft’s Windows 11 release information and, for Enterprise and Education, the Microsoft Lifecycle page.
Home and Pro users
If a Home or Pro PC is on 24H2, plan the move before October 13, 2026 unless application or hardware testing identifies a real blocker. Waiting until the final weeks leaves less time to resolve driver, recovery, or software problems.
Enterprise and Education administrators
Pilot 25H2 on representative hardware, validate update rings and deployment tools, audit scripts for WMIC and PowerShell 2.0, test security software and line-of-business applications, and decide whether the inbox-app removal policy fits your provisioning process.
Legacy-tool owners
Organizations with old inventory agents, BIOS-reporting utilities, repair scripts, or setup programs should treat the upgrade as a compatibility project. PowerShell 5.1 is not the same runtime as PowerShell 7, so replacing a PowerShell 2.0 dependency still requires testing.
A practical upgrade checklist
- Open Settings > System > About or run
winverto record the current edition and build. - Confirm whether the device is on 24H2 and identify its support deadline.
- Search scripts, deployment packages, and management agents for
wmicorwmic.exe. - Check for explicit Windows PowerShell 2.0 requirements rather than assuming any PowerShell use is affected.
- Test the enablement update on a secondary or pilot device with representative applications, drivers, firmware, security tools, and recovery procedures.
- Back up critical data and verify that rollback or recovery media works before broad deployment.
- Review Microsoft release-health notices and then move production devices before their 24H2 support deadline.
Bottom line: a support transition, not a showcase release
Windows 11 25H2 is best understood as a low-change enablement and servicing release. It formalizes capabilities delivered through 24H2’s monthly update stream, adds an Enterprise and Education policy for removing selected inbox apps, removes Windows PowerShell 2.0, and advances WMIC’s staged retirement. Its clearest benefit for consumers is the longer support clock. Upgrade for support and compatibility planning—not because 25H2 promises a new desktop or a measurable performance boost.
