The filing identified a Bluetooth Low Energy wearable and showed a rectangular body with a rear optical heart-rate assembly, two charging contacts and a side control. It did not, by itself, confirm the Galaxy Fit3 name, screen size, battery, GPS, price or launch date. Those details emerged through later Bluetooth records, leaks and Samsung’s February 2024 product documentation.
What the September 2023 FCC filing actually confirmed
The certification record lists model SM-R390 and FCC ID ZCASMR390 as a Samsung wearable. One certification database dates the approval to September 26, 2023; the associated Bluetooth Low Energy test report was issued September 11, 2023 and identifies hardware revision 1.0 and software version R390XXU0AWHG. The test report is available at fcc.report, while the certification summary is cataloged by Device.Report.
That is a radio-compliance milestone, not a retail announcement. FCC documents establish what was submitted for wireless testing and show limited physical information; they do not automatically disclose every consumer specification or guarantee when a product will go on sale.
The physical clues
- A wider, rectangular wearable body rather than the narrow proportions associated with the Galaxy Fit2.
- Rear optical heart-rate hardware.
- Two rear charging contacts, consistent with spring-pin or pogo-pin charging.
- A side button or control area.
- A conventional removable-band arrangement.
The drawings were not a complete industrial-design release. Later leaked renders showed a squarer, larger-screen band broadly consistent with the outline, but those renders remained leak material rather than Samsung confirmation. Contemporary coverage of the drawings is at Android Headlines.

Was it officially called Galaxy Fit3 at the time?
No. The initial FCC material used SM-R390 and a generic Samsung wearable description. Reviewers inferred that it was a Galaxy Fit2 successor because the model numbering and form factor did not resemble Samsung’s Galaxy Watch line. A later Bluetooth SIG listing connected the same SM-R390 model with the Galaxy Fit3 name and Bluetooth 5.3, turning a strong inference into platform-level confirmation. The later reporting is summarized by Android Authority.
What later evidence added
The FCC filing did not reveal a 1.6-inch display or a 208mAh battery. Those are final-product specifications published by Samsung. The completed device has the following documented hardware:

Samsung’s regional product page also describes more than 100 workout modes, sleep and health tracking, notifications and media controls when paired with a phone, plus fall detection and SOS-related functions. See Samsung’s product specification and the Samsung U.S. support page.
GPS, NFC and cellular: what the evidence supports
The FCC record confirms Bluetooth-related testing, but it does not prove the presence or absence of every other radio. Samsung’s final sensor list does not include GPS, and its specifications do not list NFC or cellular connectivity. The Fit3 is designed to use a paired phone for connected functions such as notifications, media controls, synchronization, fall detection and emergency features.

- Keep an eye on your fitness and health with SpO2, VO2 max, and heart-rate monitoring. Help is just a tap away if you stumble. And track your cycle in an easy and discreet way. *This device and related software are not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions, or in the cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention of disease. SPO2, VO2 max and running coach features not available at the time of launch, will become available during Q3. Features will require a software update.
- Galaxy Watch3 combines style—two sizes, three colors, 50,000-plus watch faces and premium leather bands—with military-grade durability and water resistance.
- Spend your time moving while Galaxy Watch3 tracks seven popular activities automatically. Get more out of each movement thanks to a built-in run coaching.
The careful conclusion is that the Galaxy Fit3 is a Bluetooth-connected fitness band that does not appear to include built-in GPS, NFC or cellular connectivity. A phone can provide location data during a workout; that is different from the band containing its own GPS receiver.
How the Fit3 changed the Fit2 formula
The Galaxy Fit2 launched in 2020, so Fit3 was Samsung’s first new pure fitness tracker in several years. Its larger, squarer display, onboard storage, fall detection, SOS functions and broader workout support move it beyond the Fit2’s simpler band design.

It is still intentionally below a Galaxy Watch. There is no Wear OS app ecosystem, ECG, body-composition analysis or listed standalone GPS. The trade-off is a lighter, simpler device with a much longer stated battery life and fewer smartwatch functions to manage.

The final product uses an aluminum body and supports sleep, heart-rate, blood-oxygen and stress-related wellness tracking, exercise recording, phone notifications and media controls. Samsung’s “up to 13 days” claim is based on an internal typical-use scenario involving notifications, text checks, time checks, workouts and a paired Galaxy smartphone. Frequent workouts, high brightness, many notifications and Always-On Display use can reduce runtime.
Who the Galaxy Fit3 suits—and who should skip it
Good fit
- Android users who want basic activity, sleep, heart-rate, stress and blood-oxygen wellness tracking.
- Galaxy-phone owners who value notifications, media controls, phone-linked safety features and a light form factor.
- Buyers who prefer long battery life over a full smartwatch platform.
Poor fit
- iPhone owners, because Samsung lists the Fit3 as Android-only.
- Runners and cyclists who require standalone GPS.
- Users who need ECG, body-composition analysis, cellular calling or third-party Wear OS apps.
- Anyone expecting Galaxy Watch functions in a cheaper band.
Heart-rate, oxygen-saturation, sleep and stress functions should be treated as wellness tools, not medical diagnosis. Samsung’s support documentation defines the feature boundaries at Samsung Support.
Bottom line on the FCC story
The FCC filing was an accurate early signal of a new Samsung fitness band, but not a complete specification sheet. It established SM-R390, FCC ID ZCASMR390, Bluetooth testing and the broad physical layout. Bluetooth records later supplied the Fit3 name and Bluetooth 5.3, while Samsung’s February 2024 release confirmed the 1.6-inch AMOLED display, 208mAh battery, Android-only operation and the deliberate separation from Galaxy Watch features.
For an Android user seeking a lightweight tracker, the Fit3’s long stated battery life and phone integration are its strengths. Buyers who need built-in GPS, advanced health measurements, cellular service or smartwatch apps should choose a Galaxy Watch or another product designed for those functions instead.
