Buy one only at a substantial discount after checking the exact regional model, battery condition, carrier compatibility, software status and seller warranty.
What the Black Shark 5 Pro is
The Black Shark 5 Pro is a dedicated Android gaming phone launched globally on June 9, 2022. Black Shark is the gaming-phone brand associated with Xiaomi, but the handset was not simply a Xiaomi mainstream model sold through every ordinary Xiaomi channel. Listings often call it the “Xiaomi Black Shark 5 Pro”; the safer product name is Black Shark 5 Pro.
It was the Pro model in the Black Shark 5 series, positioned above the standard Black Shark 5 with a higher-end Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, more ambitious camera hardware and flagship-level gaming features. Chinese and global units can differ in firmware, bands, memory combinations, cameras, charger and Google-service availability, so a marketplace title is not enough to identify a unit.
The official product page remains online, but that does not establish current stock, a current price or active warranty in your country. Check the seller and region rather than assuming that an official page means the phone is still widely sold.

Specifications are not perfectly consistent across documentation. Several reviews report a 13MP ultrawide, a 16MP selfie camera and approximately 9.5mm thickness, while Black Shark’s global page lists 8MP, 20MP and 9.9mm. Memory combinations also vary by market. Treat the official global page as the primary reference for a specific global unit, then confirm the model number and retail listing.
Why it is still a distinctive gaming phone
Physical magnetic triggers
The pop-up shoulder triggers are the phone’s clearest advantage. They can be mapped to on-screen actions such as aiming, firing, jumping, crouching, reloading, camera movement or racing-game acceleration. Physical buttons are more consistent than tapping a software overlay, especially when your thumbs stay on movement and camera controls.
They are not a universal controller replacement. Mapping depends on each game’s layout, and overlays or accessibility-style input can behave differently after game updates or under anti-cheat systems. Test the games you actually play.
Performance hardware and cooling
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, LPDDR5 memory and UFS 3.1 storage delivered flagship Android performance in 2022. A dual vapor-chamber cooling design helps sustain demanding sessions, while JoyUI provides game dashboards, performance controls and trigger mapping.

That chip is now several generations old. It can still run demanding Android games, but newer processors are generally more efficient and maintain performance with less heat. Sustained temperature depends on the game, frame rate, cellular signal, room temperature, case and charger; cooling hardware cannot remove heat produced by the processor and modem.
Bypass charging
Bypass charging can route power to the phone during a gaming session instead of continually charging the battery. Black Shark says this can reduce heat and battery stress. It requires external power and compatible software behavior, and it does not guarantee a cool handset. Confirm that the option exists in the particular JoyUI build before relying on it.
Display experience
The 6.67-inch 2,400 × 1,080 OLED is a strong gaming panel: deep blacks, high contrast, saturated color and up to 144Hz refresh. Launch material also claimed 10-bit color, HDR10+, DCI-P3 coverage, eye-care certification, dynamic refresh behavior and dual ambient-light sensors. Tom’s Guide described the panel as punchy and responsive with a useful adaptive mode.
- 144Hz helps only in games and interfaces that support high refresh rates.
- Higher refresh modes consume more power than 60Hz.
- Full HD+ is sharp enough for games but not unusually high-resolution by 2026 flagship standards.
- OLED burn-in remains a possibility with static game HUDs over long periods.
- Peak-brightness claims should not be confused with sustained outdoor brightness.
Battery life and 120W charging
The phone has a 4,650mAh dual-cell battery and 120W wired charging. Black Shark advertised a full charge in approximately 15 minutes under its specified charger, cable, temperature and battery conditions. A random USB-C charger will not necessarily deliver 120W.

Published 2022 review-unit results from Tom’s Guide were 11 hours 2 minutes in adaptive mode, 9 hours 42 minutes at 144Hz, 9 hours 53 minutes at 90Hz and 10 hours 53 minutes at 60Hz. Tech Advisor reported about 9 hours 6 minutes in its testing and noted that some rival gaming phones with larger batteries lasted longer. These are controlled results from new review units, not a forecast for a used 2026 phone.
A handset launched in 2022 may have lost significant capacity through age and charge cycles. Ask about battery health, unusual drain, swelling and charging temperature. Replacement batteries and competent repairs may be difficult to source in some countries.
Cameras: acceptable, not flagship-class
The official global specification lists a 108MP f/1.75 main camera, an 8MP 120-degree ultrawide, a 5MP autofocus macro camera and a 20MP front camera. The main camera can produce good daylight and casual photos, but the phone is not a camera-first device.
Tech Advisor found the ultrawide noticeably softer and considered the autofocus macro an unusual priority. Night processing, video and selfies do not match contemporary camera-focused flagships, and a macro lens is not a substitute for a useful telephoto camera. Choose a conventional flagship if photography is a major reason to upgrade.

Audio and connectivity
Symmetrical stereo speakers and a 3.5mm headphone jack are genuine strengths for games, films and wired headsets. Black Shark also promoted its microphone and audio tuning, including a high audio ranking attributed to DXOMARK; that is a dated, attributed test claim rather than a universal current measurement.
The global specification lists dual nano-SIM, Wi-Fi 6-class connectivity, Bluetooth 5.0 and a broad LTE/5G band set. Bands alone do not prove carrier certification, reliable VoLTE or 5G operation. For a US purchase, verify all of the following before paying:
- Exact model number and whether the unit is global or Chinese.
- Firmware region and whether Google Play is installed and certified.
- LTE and 5G bands used by your carrier.
- VoLTE support and carrier approval for that model.
- IMEI eligibility and blacklist status.
- A written seller promise of network compatibility and a usable return period.
Software, updates and Google services
Black Shark shipped the phone with Android 12 and JoyUI 13, a gaming-oriented interface derived from Xiaomi’s MIUI design language. Game tools, trigger controls, overlays and bypass charging are useful, but launch reviews criticized JoyUI’s polish and the lack of a clearly stated update commitment comparable to Xiaomi’s broader smartphone range. Tech Advisor and Nextpit both reported uncertainty around software and security-update guarantees.
By 2026, this is a central risk. Do not assume a current Android version, a particular security-patch date or a future upgrade without a model-specific Black Shark notice. A secondary Xiaomi-focused site claims support ending in 2026, but that is not an official Black Shark guarantee. If you depend on banking, work, government or enterprise apps, inspect the actual build before buying.

Request screenshots of Settings → About phone showing Android version, JoyUI version, security-patch date and model number. Also ask the seller to demonstrate Google Play certification, OTA updates and normal operation of your essential apps.
Buying a used or imported unit
Physical inspection checklist
- Run both pop-up triggers repeatedly and check for sticking, looseness or missed inputs.
- Display a white, gray and dark image to look for burn-in, tinting or dead pixels.
- Test the USB-C port, the original or correctly rated charger, speakers, microphones and headphone jack.
- Check every camera, autofocus, flash, SIM slot, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and vibration motor.
- Look for battery swelling, abnormal heat and rapid percentage drops.
Software and seller checks
- Confirm RAM, storage and region; there is no microSD slot, so 128GB can become restrictive with large games and emulators.
- Verify Google Play certification, OTA functionality and the security-patch date.
- Check IMEI status and carrier compatibility before removing any return protections.
- Confirm what charger, plug adapter and cable are included; a missing 120W charger changes the value.
- Require a return window or warranty, especially for an imported or re-flashed “global ROM” unit.
Do not assume water resistance: the reviewed documentation does not establish an IP rating. Official warranty coverage may have expired, and trigger or battery repairs can be costly or unavailable.

ASUS ROG Phone models generally offer a mature gaming ecosystem; REDMAGIC emphasizes aggressive gaming hardware and active cooling; mainstream flagships usually provide better cameras, support and carrier compatibility. Compare exact current models and prices rather than assuming any brand is automatically superior. Official comparison destinations include ASUS ROG Phone, REDMAGIC, Lenovo and OnePlus.
Who should buy it?
- Buy at a steep discount if physical triggers, strong speakers, a headphone jack and gaming ergonomics are your priorities.
- Skip it if the price approaches a newer gaming phone or if you need predictable multi-year security updates.
- Avoid it for camera-first use, guaranteed US carrier operation, wireless charging or a water-resistance rating.
- Choose 256GB when possible if you install large games, use emulators or record video; storage cannot be expanded.
Original global launch MSRP was $799/€799/£639 for 8GB/128GB, $899/€899/£729 for 12GB/256GB and $999/€999/£809 for 16GB/256GB. Those are June 2022 launch prices, not a current 2026 price guide. No dependable current retail price or stock level is established here, so judge every listing by condition, warranty, import costs and configuration rather than by the old MSRP.
Final verdict
The Black Shark 5 Pro is still compelling when its distinctive hardware is the point: physical triggers, a high-refresh OLED, excellent audio, a headphone port and very fast charging. It is not compelling as a routine 2026 flagship. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is older, battery health varies sharply between used units, cameras are secondary, US network behavior depends on the exact variant and Black Shark’s long-term software commitment is unclear. Buy only a verified, returnable unit at a price that reflects those risks.
