TCL also showed separate 4K models, including the QLED X8, so not every TCL television promoted at IFA was 8K.
What TCL unveiled at IFA 2018
TCL presented the 8K QLED TV as a showcase for its display, connected-TV and audio ambitions, and linked its branding to the company’s sponsorship of the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup. The announcement named a 75-inch screen, Dolby Vision HDR, Onkyo audio hardware, Dolby Atmos technology and an integrated AI soundbar with voice-control functions. TCL called it its first 8K TV; that is the company’s description of its product history.
The IFA announcement did not provide a complete retail model number, a dependable price or a detailed buyer specification sheet for the FIBA edition. It is therefore more accurate to call it an unveiled flagship than to imply that consumers could immediately order it. TCL’s IFA announcement and contemporary coverage describe the set and its headline features.
What “AI TV” meant in TCL’s announcement
TCL’s AI language chiefly referred to voice-based content discovery and control, smart-home functions, and the integrated or independently usable AI soundbar. The announcement cited Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa for its AI-enabled products. That framing does not establish that this particular 8K set used AI image reconstruction or AI upscaling; those functions should not be inferred from the “AI TV” label.

Assistant features can depend on the TV variant, country, language, firmware, network connection, accounts and local service availability. They are not proof that every voice function worked in every market or without setup. TCL’s release describes its AI proposition in terms of connected features and voice control.
How the 8K set differed from TCL’s other IFA televisions
The 8K FIBA edition was one part of a wider lineup. In particular, the X8 was a 4K QLED television—not an 8K model. TCL also discussed the Cityline C7/C76 family and the design-led Living Window range.

| Product | Resolution and positioning | Announced features and claims |
|---|---|---|
| 8K QLED FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Edition | 8K; 75-inch flagship showcase | Dolby Vision HDR, Onkyo audio hardware, Dolby Atmos technology, integrated AI soundbar and voice functions |
| QLED X8 | 4K QLED; premium model in 55-, 65- and 75-inch sizes | Quantum-dot display, Dolby Vision, Onkyo hardware and Dolby Atmos support; TCL claimed a 157% BT.709 color gamut and a minimum thickness of about 7.9 mm |
| Cityline C7/C76 | 4K UHD smart-TV family | The C7 description highlighted curved, full-screen design, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos-related audio, Harman Kardon hardware and voice control via a remote microphone. TCL identified the European C76/55DC760 as the European version of the C6. |
| Living Window | 4K QLED design-oriented range | Four design concepts—Art Deco, Abstract Beauty, Modern Simplicity and Oriental Elegance—plus a Home Gallery, Dolby Vision, Onkyo hardware, virtual Dolby Atmos and information-oriented AI functions |
The X8’s 157% BT.709 figure is TCL’s published gamut comparison, not a measure of DCI-P3 coverage, color accuracy, brightness or overall picture quality. The company also announced a Display Technology Gold Award for the X8 at IFA 2018. TCL’s regional product announcement, its European lineup announcement, its Living Window overview and its X8 award announcement give the respective details.
QLED, 8K and what the announcements did—and did not—establish
QLED was not OLED
In this context, QLED means a quantum-dot-enhanced LCD display platform. It is not OLED, whose pixels are self-emissive. The label alone does not tell a buyer how a particular TV performs for contrast, viewing angles, motion or color accuracy.

- 4K UltraHD QLED color: Quantum Dot technology delivers over a billion vibrant, true-to-life shades in every scene
- HDR PRO+: Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10 & HLG for enhanced contrast, accurate color, and fine detail across every format
- Dolby Atmos + DTS:X: Full spatial audio support across both major formats - Dolby Atmos and DTS:X/DTS Virtual:X - for broader soundbar and content compatibility
- Auto Game Mode (ALLM) + Game Bar: Automatic low-latency switching plus an on-screen overlay to fine-tune settings without leaving the game
- Motion Rate 240 with MEMC: Best-in-class motion clarity for fast sports and action, double the motion rating of typical competing QLEDs, for an ultra-crisp, blur-free picture
More pixels do not guarantee a better source
An 8K panel has more pixels than a 4K panel, but a higher resolution does not automatically improve compressed streaming video, broadcast material or other lower-resolution sources. TCL’s IFA announcement did not establish that native 8K content would be widely available to consumers. Nor did the material provide a full set of buyer specifications such as HDMI details, broadcast standards, measured brightness, input lag or independent picture-quality results.
Audio and smart features need model- and market-specific checks
An integrated soundbar can simplify a setup, but it is not a substitute for independent sound testing and may matter to buyers planning an external audio system. Likewise, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and voice-assistant support are announced capabilities, not a guarantee of identical implementation across every region or model variant.

IFA 2018’s 8K set was not the later X10
TCL introduced the X10 as a later 8K QLED television at CES on January 8, 2019. In that announcement, TCL specified 7,680 × 4,320 resolution—about 33.2 million pixels—and described quantum-dot technology, Dolby Vision, contrast-control zones, Android TV, Google Assistant, an integrated soundbar and virtual Dolby Atmos. The company planned European availability for the second half of 2019.
That chronology matters: the IFA 2018 product was identified as the 75-inch FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Edition, while X10 was the model name used in TCL’s CES 2019 announcement. The announcements show related stages in TCL’s 8K plans, but do not establish that the FIBA edition and X10 were exactly the same production model. TCL’s CES 2019 release documents the later model and its planned European timing.

Availability: an announcement is not a retail listing
TCL’s IFA materials did not establish a universal price or immediate, global retail availability for the 75-inch FIBA edition; the company qualified specifications and availability by market and local launch plans. If you encounter a listing under that name, verify the exact model number, country variant, seller and genuine stock rather than assuming it is the set shown in Berlin.
Anyone considering a surviving 2018-era listing should check native resolution versus upscaling, the smart-TV platform and local assistant support, warranty and service coverage, parts and firmware support, and the condition of the specific unit. Do not assume that a current TCL 8K or Mini LED television is the same product, or that a retailer’s description of the X8 as 8K is correct: TCL’s own IFA materials identify the X8 as 4K.
