When a game is shown on a 4K television, the console may scale a lower-resolution image to a 3840×2160 signal. That is different from the native 4K rendering associated with Xbox One X and Xbox Series X.
Why the “4K games” claim is misleading
Microsoft’s 2016 Xbox One S launch messaging grouped several features under the 4K label: Ultra HD Blu-ray playback, supported 4K streaming, HDR, and the ability to send a 4K output signal to a compatible television. Its setup explanation said that the Home screen, games and apps could be displayed at 4K when the console was set to 4K UHD, while also explaining that lower-resolution material is upscaled. See Microsoft’s explanation at Xbox One S 4K and HDR.

That describes the resolution of the signal reaching the TV, not necessarily the resolution at which a game was rendered. Microsoft later made the distinction explicit: Xbox One S handles 4K streaming and Blu-ray, while Xbox One X is the model associated with true 4K gaming. The clarification appears in Microsoft’s Xbox 4K and HDR comparison.
Native 4K, upscaling and 4K output
Native 4K rendering
A game rendered natively at 4K generates its frames at or near 3840×2160 internally. This requires substantially more graphics power than rendering at 1080p or another lower resolution.
#1 Best Overall
- Access your favorite entertainment through apps like YouTube, Netflix, and more
- Watch 4K Blu-ray movies and stream 4K video on Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Microsoft Movies & TV, and more
- Play with friends and family near and far—sitting together on the sofa or around the world on Xbox Live, the fastest, most reliable gaming network
- Xbox One games and accessories work together
- Bring your games and movies to life with immersive audio through Dolby Atmos and DTS:X
Upscaled 4K
With upscaling, the game first renders at its Xbox One S resolution. The console, or sometimes the television, enlarges that image to 3840×2160 before display. The TV can report a 4K signal even though the game did not create four times as many pixels.
What Xbox One S normally does
Xbox One S retains the original Xbox One family’s basic graphics capability, with only a modest graphics-clock increase. It can output a 4K signal and scale compatible content, but it is not a general native-4K gaming machine. Individual games can use different resolutions and scaling methods, so “every Xbox One S game is 4K” is not an accurate description.

What Xbox One S supports
| Claim | Xbox One S reality |
|---|---|
| Outputs 4K to a compatible TV | Yes, when configured for 4K UHD |
| Renders most games natively at 4K | No; games generally render below 4K and may be scaled |
| Supports HDR gaming | Yes, for compatible games and HDR-capable displays |
| Streams 4K video | Yes, where the app, title, account, network and display support it |
| Plays 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray | Yes on disc-equipped Xbox One S models |
| Plays UHD Blu-ray on the All-Digital Edition | No; that model has no optical disc drive |
What happens when you play on a 4K TV?
- The game renders at its own Xbox One S resolution.
- The console can scale the image to a 3840×2160 output if 4K UHD is selected.
- The television receives and displays a 4K signal.
Sharpness can vary with the game’s internal resolution and anti-aliasing, the TV’s scaler, game mode and other processing. If the console remains set to 1080p, the television may perform the scaling instead. A TV information panel showing 3840×2160 therefore confirms the output format, not the game’s internal framebuffer.
How to enable 4K output
The Xbox One-era Microsoft route is:
- Press the Xbox button twice to open the guide.
- Select Settings.
- Select All settings.
- Open Display & sound.
- Choose Video output.
- Set TV resolution to 4K UHD.
You need an Xbox One S, a 4K-capable television or monitor and a compatible HDMI connection. HDR additionally requires an HDR-capable display and HDR-compatible content. Labels can differ on newer system software and among TV brands; Microsoft’s documented setup is recorded at news.xbox.com/en-us/2016/08/02/xbox-one-s-4k-hdr/.

If 4K is unavailable
- Verify that the console is an Xbox One S, not the original Xbox One.
- Connect directly to a 4K-capable TV input rather than through an older receiver, splitter or capture device.
- Enable the TV’s enhanced, UHD or deep-color HDMI mode if that model requires it.
- Review the Xbox 4K TV details or display-detection screen.
- Try the TV’s game mode and check that the selected resolution, refresh rate and HDR combination is supported.
HDR is separate from 4K
HDR increases usable brightness, contrast and color range; it does not increase pixel count. A game can be 1080p with HDR, lower-resolution and upscaled to a 4K output with HDR, or 4K video without HDR.
Microsoft’s launch-period examples included Forza Horizon 3, Gears of War 4, NBA 2K17, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, The Elder Scrolls Online, Final Fantasy XV and World of Tanks. That December 2016 list is historical, not a current compatibility catalog; see Microsoft’s HDR gaming announcement.

4K movie playback
A disc-equipped Xbox One S can play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs and supported 4K streams. HDR video also depends on the disc or stream, app, console settings and display. Microsoft described these media capabilities in the Xbox One S launch announcement.
The Xbox One S All-Digital Edition can still use supported streaming and digital video services, but it cannot play physical UHD Blu-ray discs because it has no optical drive.

Xbox One S versus other Xbox models
| Console | 4K gaming position | Media and model notes |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox One S | Generally no native 4K game rendering; supports 4K output and scaling | 4K streaming; UHD Blu-ray on disc models; HDR gaming |
| Xbox One X | Supports native-4K targets in selected enhanced titles | Also supports 4K video, HDR and UHD Blu-ray |
| Xbox Series S | Newer generation, generally designed for below-4K game rendering with 4K output support | Digital-only; no UHD Blu-ray drive |
| Xbox Series X | Designed for higher-resolution gaming, including native-4K targets in supported titles | Current-generation disc model |
“Xbox One X Enhanced” does not guarantee that every title runs at native 4K; enhancements can include resolution, textures, HDR or performance. Likewise, a 4K signal from an Xbox One S does not make it equivalent to an Xbox One X.
Should you buy an Xbox One S for a 4K TV?
It can make sense when
- You want inexpensive Xbox One-era gaming and do not require native 4K.
- You want HDR in games that support it.
- You need 4K streaming or an affordable UHD Blu-ray player.
- You already own the console and are upgrading the display.
- You plan to use the TV later with newer hardware.
Choose something else when
- Native 4K gaming is your main requirement.
- You want modern Xbox performance and software support.
- You expect every game to run at 4K or 60 frames per second.
- You are comparing graphics performance with Xbox One X or Xbox Series X.
For Xbox One-era 4K gaming, a suitable Xbox One X may be the used-market option, subject to condition and warranty. For newer software and a longer-term 4K-oriented system, compare Xbox Series X at xbox.com/consoles/xbox-series-x. Xbox Series S at xbox.com/consoles/xbox-series-s is newer and digital-only, but is not a native-4K replacement for Series X. Microsoft’s Xbox One X reference is at xbox.com/consoles/xbox-one-x.
Bottom line for buyers
Xbox One S is a 4K media and output-upscaling console with HDR gaming support—not a native-4K gaming console. Buy or keep it for affordable Xbox gaming, supported HDR, 4K streaming or UHD Blu-ray on disc models. Choose Xbox One X or Xbox Series X when the purpose is genuinely native-4K-oriented game performance.
