Use Magic Eraser in Google Photos for ordinary photobombers, people, signs, wires and other distractions. For larger or complicated areas, try Magic Editor. In either case, choose Save as copy when you need to keep the untouched original.
Before you start
- Use the current Google Photos app on Android or iPhone. Google says some editing features are unavailable in the browser editor, so use the mobile app if a tool is missing (Google’s desktop help).
- Update Google Photos, keep a working internet connection and free storage available. On Android, Google lists Android 8.0 or newer and at least 3 GB of RAM for many editing features; some tools require more memory, a Pixel device or a personal Google Account. Some tools download separately, and Google says installation can fail when less than 1 GB of device storage is free (Google’s Android requirements).
- Keep the original if the image has documentary, legal, journalistic or evidentiary value. Removing a person or object reconstructs hidden pixels; it does not recover information that was behind the subject.
Remove a person or object with Magic Eraser on Android
- Open Google Photos and select the photo.
- Tap Edit.
- Open Actions, then tap Magic Eraser. If the editor offers a search field instead, tap Search and type Magic Eraser.
- Tap, brush over or circle the unwanted person or object. Google Photos may suggest items automatically.
- Tap Erase.
- Inspect the reconstruction. Use Move to reposition a selection, touch and hold while pinching with two fingers to resize it, or tap Deselect to start over. Refine selection lets you choose Add or Subtract to adjust the area.
- Tap Done, then choose Save as copy to preserve the original, or Save if replacing the edited version is intentional.
Google’s current Android instructions and control names are documented at Google Photos Help. Older guides may call the section Tools; current Android documentation places Magic Eraser under Actions and also supports editor search.
If Magic Eraser is not under Actions
- Update Google Photos from the Play Store or App Store.
- Open the photo in the mobile app, not only at photos.google.com.
- Try Edit → Search → Magic Eraser.
- Install any editing tool that Google Photos asks you to download, then close and reopen the editor.
- Check operating-system, RAM and storage requirements, and confirm that you are using a supported personal account if the feature requires one.
- Try another photo. If the tool is missing for every image, restart the app and send feedback from Google Photos.
Availability can also depend on device model, Pixel-only restrictions, account type, region and staged rollout. Google documents these limitations at its Android help page.
When Magic Editor is the better choice
Magic Eraser is a focused removal tool. Magic Editor is a generative editor that can move a subject, erase a larger area and rebuild a more complicated background. Use it when a person covers furniture, architecture or another irregular texture, or when moving the main subject first would make removal easier.

Google describes Magic Editor as experimental and says controls can vary by device. Its availability announcement states that Android and iOS users received a monthly allowance of Magic Editor saves, while Pixel devices and qualifying Google One plans had broader access at that time (Google’s announcement). Current eligibility and limits can change, so rely on the allowance shown in your account.
Remove people and objects on an iPhone or iPad
Google has made Magic Eraser and other AI editing tools available to Google Photos users on iOS, but menu labels are not identical on every iPhone or app release. Open the photo, tap Edit, and look for Magic Eraser, Magic Editor or Actions. If nothing appears, update Google Photos from the App Store, reopen the app and check the editor’s search or tools area. The Android path above is the most precisely documented current procedure; iOS availability can vary by app version, device and account.

Choose the right approach
| Situation | Best first choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Small, separate person or object on a simple background | Magic Eraser | Fast removal with limited reconstruction. |
| Large object, several overlapping elements or a subject that must move | Magic Editor | Generative tools can rebuild a wider area. |
| Distraction at the edge of the frame | Crop | Removes the item without inventing background detail. |
| Face, license plate, address or medical information | Blur or markup | Obscures sensitive content instead of fabricating replacement detail. |
| Commercially important image, RAW workflow or precise multi-layer retouching | Dedicated editor | Healing, cloning, masks and layers provide more control. |
How to get a cleaner result
- Select a little beyond the object’s outline so shadows, reflections and connected accessories are included.
- Remove linked items separately, such as a person and the shadow they cast.
- Make several small edits instead of one very large selection.
- Try cropping before using AI when the unwanted item is near an edge.
- Zoom in and inspect faces, hands, hair, text, logos, license plates, jewelry, fences, rails, reflections and architectural lines.
- Compare the result with the original before sharing it. If the reconstruction looks artificial, undo it, try Magic Editor or use a crop, blur or another editor.
Why an erased area can look strange
Removal is AI reconstruction, not a recovery of hidden pixels. A person covering another person’s hand, clothing or face forces Google Photos to guess what was there. Repeated patterns, transparent objects, text, reflections and straight lines are especially difficult. Generative editing can also change nearby details that were not selected, so check the main subject and background people as well as the erased area.
Do you need Google One?
Google announced broad availability of many AI editing features without a subscription, subject to device and account requirements. A subscription is not automatically required for a basic Magic Eraser edit. Magic Editor saves, however, can be subject to an allowance and eligibility rules that change over time.

Google’s older announcement referred to a 2 TB-or-higher Premium Google One plan for access beyond the stated allowance. The current U.S. plan page uses different names: as listed on August 18, 2026, Basic is 100 GB for $1.99 per month, Google AI Plus is 2 TB for $9.99 per month, and Google AI Pro is 5 TB for $19.99 per month (Google One plans). Check the plan and limit displayed in your own Google Photos account rather than assuming an older label still applies.
Google One makes sense when you have reached an applicable save limit and also need storage for Photos, Gmail or Drive. It is a poor fit if Magic Eraser already works, you only need one or two edits, or you require professional retouching control; a subscription cannot guarantee a perfect reconstruction.

When saving fails
- Wait for processing to finish and keep the app open.
- Check network access and free device storage.
- Confirm that you have not reached a Magic Editor save allowance.
- Try saving a copy of a different photo to identify whether the problem is file-specific.
- Update or restart Google Photos, then retry.
- If the feature remains unavailable, consult Google’s help and community pages, including reports about missing tools and failed saves (Google Photos Community).
Preserve authenticity and privacy
Use Save as copy for a reversible workflow. Google warns that edits saved as a copy are separate images and cannot be undone with the normal Revert control (Google Photos Help). Keep the original and label the edited file when accuracy matters. For privacy-sensitive material, blurring or marking a face, plate or document may be more honest than replacing it with AI-generated background.

Can Google Photos remove a person from a group photo?
Yes, if Magic Eraser or Magic Editor is available, but overlapping people are difficult because the app must invent hidden faces, hands, clothing and background detail. Inspect the result closely.
Can I remove an object without changing the original?
Yes. Choose Save as copy after editing. The copy is separate; the original remains available.
Does Magic Eraser work on a computer?
Not reliably. Google says some editing features are unavailable in the web editor, so use the Android or iOS app when Magic Eraser is missing in a browser.
What is the difference between Magic Eraser and Magic Editor?
Magic Eraser is for straightforward distraction removal. Magic Editor is a broader generative tool for moving subjects and rebuilding larger or more complicated areas.
