As of August 18, 2026, Nintendo Switch 2 is not a dependable streaming device. YouTube is currently unusable, Crunchyroll is unsupported, and Hulu ended on the original Switch in February 2026. Nintendo has not established a broad Switch 2 catalog for Netflix, Disney+, Max, Prime Video, sports services or similar apps in the U.S. sources reviewed. App availability can differ by country and may change when a service publishes a Switch 2 version.

The statuses below reflect official information available on August 18, 2026. “No verified app” means the reviewed U.S. Nintendo or service sources did not confirm a current Switch 2 app; it is not proof that a service can never arrive.

Nintendo’s Switch and Switch 2 compatibility framework documents many games, account and smart-device features, but it is not a blanket guarantee that every original Switch application works on the new console.
YouTube on Switch 2
Nintendo’s Japan support page, which covers both consoles, says YouTube cannot currently be used on Switch 2. Launching the Switch version produces an error equivalent to “Could not start.” Nintendo says it is working with software makers toward future support, but the cited page gives no date or promise of a release.

On the original Nintendo Switch, Nintendo still documents YouTube as downloadable from the eShop and says a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required. That original-Switch guidance does not make the app compatible with Switch 2. Read Nintendo’s YouTube guidance.
Crunchyroll on Switch 2
Crunchyroll explicitly says its app is not supported on Switch 2. It also warns that a system transfer can leave the app icon on the new console even though selecting it will not successfully launch the service. Crunchyroll continues to support the original Switch and says it has no announcement about a Switch 2 release date. See Crunchyroll’s current FAQ.
What happened to Hulu?
Hulu is not a missing Switch 2 launch feature that was later removed. Nintendo says the Hulu app was removed from the original Switch eShop on November 6, 2025, and Hulu service on that console ended on February 5, 2026. Buying a Switch 2 or subscribing to Hulu therefore does not create a Nintendo-console viewing option. General account questions are directed to Hulu. Nintendo’s discontinuation notice.
Why can a transferred app appear but fail?
The Crunchyroll behavior demonstrates that an icon surviving a system transfer is not proof of compatibility. The most defensible explanation is an inference: transfer can restore software metadata or a home-screen entry without supplying a Switch 2-compatible application, certification or service update. Nintendo and Crunchyroll do not state that technical mechanism in the cited material.

- The app may fail immediately rather than indicate a Wi-Fi, account or subscription error.
- Reinstalling, updating the console or buying a Nintendo Switch Online plan is not established as a fix for an unsupported app.

Can a browser, phone cast or GameChat replace an app?
Web browser
The official material reviewed here does not establish a general-purpose Switch 2 browser that can run Netflix, YouTube, Hulu or other DRM-protected streaming websites. Do not buy the console expecting browser playback as a workaround.
Casting from a phone or tablet
A phone or tablet can run a service independently, but that does not show that Switch 2 accepts Chromecast, AirPlay or another casting protocol. No official Switch 2 casting solution was verified.
GameChat
GameChat is a communication and video-chat feature, not a Netflix-style video-on-demand platform. Nintendo’s compatibility documentation treats GameChat controls separately from third-party entertainment apps. Nintendo compatibility information.

Phone or tablet
This is the immediate portable option: install each service directly, use its supported offline-download features where offered, and avoid relying on Switch 2 compatibility. The trade-off is a smaller screen and less convenient television integration.

Roku streaming stick or box
For TV viewing, a dedicated Roku is the lowest-cost straightforward companion to a Switch 2. Roku’s U.S. product page listed these prices when checked on August 18, 2026:

Prices are volatile; a July 2026 report described Roku price increases. Check the official Roku players page before purchase and confirm that your services, region, TV and desired formats are supported.

Google TV and Amazon Fire TV devices provide broad TV app ecosystems. Fire TV is a sensible fit for households already using Alexa or Amazon services, while its interface is less appealing if you prefer a platform-neutral experience. Amazon’s current product information is at Amazon Fire TV. Device and app availability vary by country.
Apple TV 4K
Apple TV 4K suits Apple households and readers who want a premium streaming box, but it is unnecessary if the goal is simply inexpensive HD YouTube and Netflix. The official purchase flow is at Apple’s Apple TV 4K page; no current price is stated here.
Original Nintendo Switch
An original Switch can still be a limited stopgap for YouTube and Crunchyroll, but Hulu has ended and the platform should not be treated as an all-purpose streaming replacement.
Should you buy Switch 2 for streaming?
- Buy it for Nintendo games: Switch 2 is designed around portable and TV-connected gaming, Nintendo exclusives, its game library and features such as GameChat.
- Do not buy it primarily for streaming: the apps you may expect are either unsupported, discontinued or not officially verified in the reviewed sources.
- Add a separate streamer for TV viewing: a Roku, Google TV, Fire TV or Apple TV provides a purpose-built app and remote experience without depending on Switch 2 compatibility.
- Keep an original Switch only for limited app access: its remaining YouTube and Crunchyroll support may matter, but service availability can change.
Do not purchase a second Switch 2 to solve an app-compatibility problem, and do not assume a transferred icon, system update or Nintendo Switch Online subscription will unlock unsupported services.
