How to Customize the Lock Screen on a Samsung Galaxy

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On most recent Samsung Galaxy phones, you can customize the lock screen by touching and holding it, or by opening Settings → Wallpaper and style and selecting the lock-screen preview. From there, change the wallpaper, clock, widgets or Brief widgets, and bottom-corner shortcuts. Menu names and available options differ by model, region, carrier, and One UI version.

Open the lock-screen editor

  1. Wake the phone without unlocking it.
  2. Touch and hold an empty area of the lock screen.
  3. Enter your PIN, password, or pattern if prompted. Authentication is normal: it prevents someone holding your locked phone from changing its setup.
  4. Tap the element you want to edit, make your changes, then tap Done.

You can also open Settings → Wallpaper and style, select the lock-screen preview, and tap an item to edit it. Depending on your phone and software, additional controls may appear under Settings → Lock screen and AOD. If a path does not match, search Settings for “Lock screen” or “Wallpaper and style.” Samsung notes that available controls vary by device and software version: Samsung lock-screen and security settings.

Change the lock-screen wallpaper

  1. Open the lock-screen editor and tap the wallpaper preview or Wallpaper.
  2. Choose a source, such as Gallery, built-in wallpapers, downloaded images, or another option offered on your phone.
  3. Select an image, then crop or reposition it.
  4. Choose Lock screen only or apply the image to both the lock screen and Home screen, if offered.
  5. Tap Done.

Some Galaxy models and software versions offer video, motion, or generated-wallpaper choices. These features are not available on every phone or in every region; Samsung describes them as part of supported One UI features: Samsung One UI features.

For a more readable screen, keep important faces, logos, and text clear of the clock and shortcuts. An image with open space near the top and bottom can help. If the image is awkwardly cropped or automatically dimmed, try a different crop or disable wallpaper effects if that control is available. Motion wallpapers may use more power than a still image.

Change the clock style, color, or position

  1. In the lock-screen editor, tap the clock.
  2. Choose a style and, if available, a color.
  3. Use the displayed controls to resize or reposition the clock, then tap Done.

One UI 6 added more freedom to reposition the lock-screen clock, but the available placement, size, font, and color controls depend on the device, software, and selected clock style. Some styles have fixed layouts; try another style if the clock will not move. Samsung outlines the One UI clock changes at its One UI features page.

On One UI 6.1 and later, the Always On Display generally follows the lock-screen clock style. Older versions may have a separate AOD clock setting. A theme or Good Lock module can also affect the layout. See Samsung’s Always On Display guidance for version-dependent controls.

Add, rearrange, or remove lock-screen widgets

The label depends on the One UI version. Older interfaces use Widgets or + Widgets; supported newer One UI 7 interfaces may use Brief widgets.

Older Widgets interface

  1. Touch and hold the lock screen, then authenticate if asked.
  2. Tap Widgets or + Widgets.
  3. Browse the available options, select a widget, and choose a style if prompted.
  4. Add others as needed, then drag them to rearrange them.
  5. Tap the red minus icon beside a widget to remove it, then tap Done.

Samsung lists options such as Battery, Clock, Reminder, Calendar, and Camera, but availability depends on the device, installed apps, and software. A lock-screen widget is not the same as a Home-screen widget: only supported widgets appear in this editor. Samsung’s instructions are at its lock-screen widgets page.

Brief widgets on supported One UI 7 devices

  1. Open Settings → Wallpaper and style and select the current lock screen.
  2. Tap Add widgets.
  3. Choose a Brief widget and its presentation style.
  4. Tap Done.

Samsung’s newer documentation describes Brief widgets as incorporating or simplifying earlier lock-screen widget and FaceWidget functions. The supported apps and styles can change. See Samsung’s Brief widgets guide.

Widgets make information quicker to check, but may expose calendar, battery, health, music, or other details to anyone looking at the phone. Tapping a widget may still require authentication before sensitive content opens.

Change the bottom-corner app shortcuts

  1. Wake the lock screen and touch and hold it.
  2. Authenticate if prompted.
  3. Tap the left or right shortcut.
  4. Choose another available app, or select No app to remove the shortcut.
  5. Tap Done. To launch a shortcut later, swipe its icon in the indicated direction.

Samsung’s standard lock screen commonly starts with Phone and Camera, but available choices vary. Some actions or apps require unlocking before they open fully; that is expected behavior. See Samsung’s shortcut instructions. Consider privacy as well as convenience: a shortcut can expose limited app access before authentication.

Control notification privacy

Depending on One UI, notification controls are commonly under Settings → Notifications → Lock screen notifications or Settings → Lock screen and AOD → Notifications. If neither path appears, search Settings for Lock screen notifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose whether notifications appear and whether they show as icons, compact items, or detailed cards. You may also be able to choose which apps can show notifications there. For a personal phone, showing icons while hiding content is a useful middle ground. Hide previews that could reveal messages, email subjects, one-time codes, work information, or other sensitive details—especially if other people can see the screen.

Set up Always On Display

  1. Open Settings → Lock screen and AOD → Always On Display. The exact path may differ.
  2. Turn on Always On Display.
  3. Choose when it should appear, using the options available on your phone.
  4. Adjust supported options such as wallpaper, music information, or other displayed details.

Samsung lists timing choices that can include Auto, Always, Tap to show, As scheduled, and For new notifications. Supported models may also offer Show Lock screen wallpaper, Erase background, or music information. On supported One UI 7 phones, AOD can include Now bar information. These settings are not universal; see Samsung’s AOD settings guide.

Supported lock-screen widgets can appear on AOD when AOD is enabled, but not every device or widget behaves the same way: Samsung’s widget guidance. AOD uses additional power, and visible wallpaper, music details, or notifications may reveal information to nearby people. Tap-to-show or a schedule can limit how often it is visible. Samsung’s documentation says AOD is not available on Galaxy Z Flip cover screens.

Use Good Lock for more customization

Try Samsung’s built-in editor first. If you want more control, Good Lock is Samsung’s optional family of customization apps. Its modules include LockStar for lock-screen layout, ClockFace for clock options, Wonderland for animated or effect-based wallpapers, and Theme Park for broader colors and themes.

Good Lock and its modules are available only in selected countries, and support can vary by device and One UI version. A module may not yet work as expected after a major update. Use Samsung-supported distribution where available rather than unofficial APKs. Samsung’s overview is at the Good Lock FAQ.

Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold differences

On foldables, the cover screen and main display may have separate controls. A Galaxy Z Flip cover-screen widget setup, for example, can be opened from the cover screen by touching and holding an empty area and selecting Widgets. Availability varies by model and software; Samsung’s widget guide and Galaxy Z Flip 6 user guide provide device-specific context. Do not assume a setting on the internal display also changes the cover screen.

Fix common customization problems

  • The editor will not open: Lock the phone, wake it, and touch and hold the lock screen rather than the Home screen. If that fails, search Settings for Wallpaper and style, Lock screen, or Lock screen and AOD. A theme, enterprise policy, or device-specific restriction can also affect editing.
  • Widgets is missing: Look for Brief widgets under Settings → Wallpaper and style → current lock screen → Add widgets. If a desired widget is still absent, its app or device may not support it.
  • A widget appears on the lock screen but not AOD: Check that AOD is enabled and review its display timing. A widget may not be supported on AOD on your model.
  • The clock will not move or change color: Try another clock style. Some styles have fixed layouts, and controls vary by software version.
  • A shortcut waits for authentication: Some actions are marked as requiring an unlock; this is a security safeguard, not necessarily a fault.
  • Changes disappear after applying a theme: A theme or Good Lock module may override the built-in layout. Temporarily switch to the default theme and test again.
  • The screen looks different after an update: Samsung sometimes moves or renames controls, including the change from older widget terminology to Brief widgets. Follow the labels visible on your phone rather than relying on screenshots from another version.

Check privacy before you finish

  • Hide notification content if messages, email, or authentication codes should not be visible.
  • Remove widgets that reveal information you do not want visible while the phone is locked.
  • Review what the bottom-corner shortcuts can access before unlocking.
  • Choose whether AOD should show wallpaper, notifications, or other details.
  • Keep a secure screen lock enabled; changing the lock-screen appearance does not require weakening device security.
