2024 in a Snap: What Snapchat’s Year-End Retrospective Revealed

Snapchat’s “2024 in a Snap” was a public, platform-wide year-end report published on December 9, 2024—not a personal recap for every account. Snap used it to highlight activity around Spotlight, sports, music, beauty, travel and augmented-reality Lenses, while separate Snapchat Recap Stories were generated for some users from Snaps saved to Memories.

What “2024 in a Snap” covered

Snap’s newsroom article collected examples and metrics from activity during 2024. It mixed global viewing figures with US-specific Lens rankings and survey findings, so its figures should not be read as one uniform ranking or as a census of every Snapchat user. Snap said Snapchat had more than 850 million monthly active users when the article was published; that is a company-reported audience figure dated December 9, 2024, not a current user count. Snap’s 2024 retrospective

The public report is also distinct from Flashback Memories, which surfaces older saved Snaps, and from the personalized Recap Story. A Recap was assembled from a person’s saved Memories, rather than from all activity on their account or every photo on their phone. Snapchat’s Recap explanation and its Flashback Memories guide describe those separate features.

The headline numbers—and what they measure

Snap-reported figure What it measures Scope and qualification
More than 262 million hours Beauty content viewed on Spotlight Global viewing during 2024; watch time is not a count of unique viewers.
More than 73 million hours Travel content viewed on Spotlight Global viewing during 2024; not a measure of bookings or travelers.
More than 25 million minutes Time spent on sports content on Spotlight Global; Snap described this as “on average,” without enough detail in the retrospective to make the averaging basis clearer.
More than 800,000 Snaps Creations using the NBA jersey try-on Lens A creation count, not a count of distinct people or purchases.
More than 200 million Spotlight videos Videos created using community-made Lenses Snap’s full-year 2024 results; videos, not unique creators.
More than 500 million monthly active users on average Spotlight audience Snap’s Q3 2024 figure, up 21% year over year; a quarterly average, not the December newsroom audience figure.

The first four figures come from Snap’s retrospective; the community-Lens and Spotlight audience figures come from its full-year 2024 results and Q3 2024 results. Hours watched, minutes spent, creations and monthly audience are different measures; none should be substituted for another.

Sports: fandom, sharing and AR try-ons

Snap framed sports as both a viewing and participation category: fans could follow teams, leagues, athletes and creators, react to moments, and share them with friends. The NBA jersey Lens, used to create more than 800,000 Snaps, illustrates AR’s role as a fan activity rather than simply a viewing format.

Snap also reported that 93% of US Snapchatters surveyed said following favorite teams or athletes on social media made them feel closer to them. That is a survey finding about respondents in the United States, not a behavioral measure of all Snapchatters. During the Paris 2024 Games, Snap separately said more than 225 million Snapchatters engaged with more than 25 Olympic-related AR experiences. These are company-reported engagement figures, not evidence that each person used every experience. Snap’s Q3 2024 results

Music became a tool for making identity visible

Snap said 79% of US Snapchatters surveyed were passionate about music. Its US list of popular creation tracks included “Friday, I’m in Love” by The Cure, “I like the way you kiss me” by Artemas, “MILLION DOLLAR BABY” by Tommy Richman, and “Popular” by The Weeknd and Madonna. This is a list of tracks used in Snapchat content creation, not a chart of the year’s most-streamed songs overall.

Music Lenses also tied audio to visual trends. Snap highlighted the popularity and sharing of Charli XCX’s “Brat”-inspired aesthetic and music experiences, alongside campaigns associated with Charli XCX and Katy Perry. The pattern shows how a sound can become a visual cue or a repeatable social format inside the app; it does not establish overall music popularity beyond Snapchat. Snap’s report on music and Lenses

Beauty and travel: discovery through the camera and Spotlight

Beauty

Snap said beauty Lenses generated higher engagement in the US than the average AR Lens, and reported more than 262 million global hours of beauty content viewed on Spotlight. The examples put AR try-on, product discovery, friend feedback and sponsored brand experiences together. The figures describe activity and engagement as Snap reported them; they do not establish purchases, conversion rates or incremental sales.

Travel

More than 73 million hours of travel content were viewed on Spotlight globally during 2024, according to Snap. The company also presented Spotlight and Sponsored AR Lenses as ways to find destination inspiration and share trips, citing experiences from VisitScotland and Las Vegas. That positions Snapchat as a visual inspiration and sharing layer, not as a booking service. Snap’s beauty and travel figures

Which Lenses and campaigns stood out?

Among the most-selected non-sponsored Lenses in the US, Snap named Pink Dog, Soft Filter and Scribble World. “Selected” describes a different action from sharing or creating with a Lens, and the list should not be mistaken for a global ranking.

Snap separately highlighted sponsored experiences including “Venom: The Last Dance,” Bojangles / Tri-Arc Food Systems, and campaigns connected with Charli XCX and Katy Perry. Sponsored Lenses are paid brand experiences, so their prominence is evidence of Snapchat’s advertising format as well as a measure of user interaction—not necessarily an organic trend. AR and generative AI moved beyond novelty

Snap’s broader 2024 product story linked AR to try-ons, branded entertainment and sports, while generative AI added new ways to transform images and build Lenses. Snap introduced its fifth-generation Spectacles and Snap OS, alongside generative-AI tools for Lens developers. These developments show investment in both consumer experiences and creator infrastructure; they do not mean every Lens was AI-generated.

For Q4 2024, Snap reported that more than 400 million Snapchatters engaged with new GenAI Lenses more than 4 billion times. The company’s wording does not make the interaction count equivalent to unique users, nor should a Q4 figure be presented as a full-year total. Snap also described its first branded Dreams AI Lens, with partners including Uber Eats and Tinder, and said its first pre-generated AI Lens reduced GPU utilization during generation. These are Snap-reported product and infrastructure claims. Snap’s Q4 2024 investor letter

The retrospective’s business subtext

“2024 in a Snap” was a cultural roundup, not a complete assessment of Snap Inc.’s financial performance. Its emphasis on Spotlight, Lenses, creators and brand campaigns nevertheless reflected the company’s effort to expand beyond private messaging.

  • Discovery: Spotlight had more than 500 million monthly active users on average in Q3 2024, according to Snap, giving the short-video product a substantial role alongside communication features.
  • Advertising: Snap presented Sponsored Snaps, Promoted Places and AR campaigns as ways for advertisers to reach people in social and camera contexts. It claimed AR ad formats delivered more than five times the active attention of other social-media platforms in its cited comparison; that is Snap’s advertising claim, not an independent universal benchmark. Snap’s cited comparison
  • Creators: Snap announced a unified creator monetization program allowing eligible creators to monetize Spotlight videos, building on its Stories program. Eligibility and monetization terms are separate from the aggregate trend figures. Snap’s full-year results
  • Subscriptions: “Other Revenue,” the majority of which Snap said consisted of Snapchat+ subscription revenue, grew 131% year over year in 2024. Subscription growth diversified revenue, but did not replace advertising as Snap’s core business. Snap’s financial results

For context, Snap reported $5.36 billion in full-year 2024 revenue. Its Form 10-K said global ad impressions grew about 16%, partly offset by an approximately 4% decline in cost per ad impression. In Q4, Snap said Sponsored Snaps and Promoted Places produced an average 30% increase in US reach for advertising partners. These company-reported measures help explain the commercial focus of the retrospective, but they are not proof that every advertiser or campaign achieved those outcomes. How to find a personal Snapchat Recap

A Snapchat Recap is a Story compiled from Snaps saved to Memories during the year. It may feature places, activities and friends represented in those saved Snaps. Since Recaps are available only for a limited period, the 2024 Recap should not be assumed to remain accessible in 2026.

  1. Open Snapchat on your phone and go to the Camera screen.
  2. Swipe up to open Memories.
  3. If Snapchat generated a Recap for the account and it is still available, look for it in Memories. Snapchat’s Recap support page and Memories guide describe this location.

If a Recap is missing or will not load

Try basic loading fixes

  1. Stay on the Memories page with a Wi-Fi connection so content can load.
  2. Quit Snapchat and reopen it.
  3. Update Snapchat to the latest version available for the device.
  4. If saved Memories themselves appear missing, clear Snapchat’s cache and restart the device, then check Memories again. Snapchat’s Memories troubleshooting guidance covers missing saved Snaps.

Know when troubleshooting cannot restore it

Snapchat says not every account receives a Recap; availability depends partly on the amount of saved Memories. Recaps cannot be requested on demand, are time-limited, exclude My Eyes Only content, and a dismissed or hidden Recap is permanently removed. Camera Roll media is not backed up to Memories, and Snapchat says lost or deleted Memories cannot be recovered. A Recap therefore cannot be treated as a full phone-photo archive. Recap availability and exclusions; Memories limits

If preserving a copy matters, Snapchat provides a data-download process, but it does not promise to restore deleted Memories or recreate an expired Recap. See how to download Snapchat data.

What the 2024 retrospective ultimately revealed

Snap’s year-end story was about a platform trying to connect close-friend communication with algorithmic video discovery, AR-mediated self-expression, fandom and creator publishing. Its figures offer a useful view of what Snap chose to spotlight—especially Spotlight watch time, Lens creation and commercial AR—but they are company-reported measures with different scopes and definitions. The distinction matters: a high viewing total, a popular Lens and a survey response each describe a different kind of activity.
