Razer Phone 2 Review: Is This Discontinued Gaming Phone Worth Buying in 2026?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Razer Phone 2 is worth considering only as a cheap, tested secondary gaming or media device. Its 120Hz 1440p LCD, front-facing stereo speakers, wireless charging and distinctive Chroma logo remain unusual, but the 2018 phone is now end of life. It tops out at Android 9, has no 5G, contains an aging battery and may not activate reliably on every carrier. For banking, work authentication or dependable daily use, buy a newer supported phone instead.

Razer Phone 2 at a glance

Razer announced the second-generation Razer Phone in October 2018 as a gaming- and media-focused successor to the original model. It launched in the United States at $799. Razer’s support documentation now identifies it as end of life, with an expired warranty and no live support: Razer support status.

Specification Razer Phone 2
Processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, up to 2.8GHz
GPU and memory Adreno 630; 8GB LPDDR4X RAM
Storage 64GB UFS, plus microSD officially listed up to 1TB
Display 5.72-inch 1440 × 2560 IGZO LCD, 120Hz UltraMotion, Gorilla Glass 5
Cameras 12MP wide (f/1.75, OIS) and 12MP telephoto (f/2.6) rear; 8MP front
Audio Dual front-facing stereo speakers, Dolby Atmos; USB-C 24-bit DAC adapter
Battery and charging 4,000mAh; Quick Charge 4.0+ and wireless charging
Connectivity 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, LTE; no 5G
Protection IP67 when new and undamaged
Dimensions and weight 158.5 × 78.99 × 8.5mm; 220g
Launch software Android 8.1 Oreo; later official update to Android 9 Pie

Specifications are documented by Razer at the product support page and in its launch announcement at Razer Newsroom.

What made the Razer Phone 2 special?

A genuinely unusual 120Hz display

The 5.72-inch panel combines 1440p resolution with a 120Hz refresh rate and variable-refresh UltraMotion tuning. Scrolling and supported games can look notably smoother than on conventional 60Hz phones. That specification does not guarantee 120 frames per second: frame rate depends on the game, graphics settings, thermal state and Android compatibility. Compared with current OLED phones, the Razer’s LCD generally offers weaker contrast, brightness and efficiency, and its 16:9 shape leaves less room for modern apps than today’s taller screens.

Speakers and enthusiast design

Front-facing stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos remain one of the phone’s best media features. The glass-backed body is solid but heavy at 220g, and its bezels look large beside modern phones. The rear Chroma RGB logo can show notifications and lighting effects, but it is an enthusiast flourish rather than a practical advantage. Wireless charging was a welcome feature in 2018, although it is slower and less sophisticated than current flagship implementations.

Gaming-focused cooling

Snapdragon 845 and Adreno 630 were flagship components at launch. A vapor-chamber cooling system was designed to spread heat during demanding use. In 2026, that hardware is several generations old. Older Android games and many emulators can still be enjoyable, while newer demanding games may require reduced settings or encounter compatibility issues. Years of heat cycles, an aged battery and deteriorated thermal materials can also reduce sustained performance in an individual unit.

Cameras: capable hardware, outdated results

The rear array uses a 12MP wide camera with optical image stabilization and a 12MP telephoto camera with 2× optical zoom, supported by dual autofocus and a dual-tone flash. It can record up to 4K video. Those specifications were ambitious for a gaming phone, but they are not a reason to buy one now. Image processing, app support and software maintenance lag far behind current mainstream phones; two 12MP sensors do not make modern flagship photographs.

Software support and security in 2026

The phone shipped with Android 8.1 Oreo and received an official Android 9 Pie update. Razer now classifies the device as end of life, says its warranty has expired and states that live support is unavailable (official support notice). Buyers should assume there is no current security-update commitment unless Razer explicitly documents one.

  • Do not choose it for banking, workplace authentication or long-term primary use.
  • Some current apps may require newer Android APIs, fail Play compatibility checks or stop receiving updates.
  • Community ROMs may exist, but availability changes. Unofficial software can break banking apps, DRM, cameras, fingerprint functions or device integrity.

Battery and reliability when buying used

Every available handset is many years old, so the original 4,000mAh rating says little about present capacity. The battery is not normally user-removable; replacement usually requires specialist repair and may not be economical.

  1. Ask for battery-health evidence and watch for rapid percentage drops or shutdowns under load.
  2. Inspect for swelling, screen separation, creaking, unusual heat or a lifting back panel.
  3. Test charging with a known-good charger and cable, including cable fit in the USB-C port.
  4. Check data transfer and recognition of the USB-C-to-3.5mm DAC adapter.
  5. Test both speakers, microphones, calls, cameras, autofocus, flash, fingerprint sensor, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC and wireless charging.
  6. Confirm a factory reset, no Google account lock, a clean IMEI and a seller return window.

IP67 describes testing when the phone was new and undamaged, not permanent waterproofing. Seals can degrade after age, drops or repairs, so keep a used unit away from water.

Carrier compatibility: unlocked does not mean universal

The Razer Phone 2 supports 2G, 3G and LTE bands but no 5G. A listing marked “unlocked” does not guarantee activation: carrier certification, VoLTE provisioning, regional model and network shutdowns all matter.

  1. Get the exact model number, such as RZ35-0259 or its regional suffix.
  2. Compare its LTE bands with the intended carrier.
  3. Ask the carrier to confirm VoLTE, emergency calling and activation eligibility.
  4. Check the IMEI for blacklist, financing or carrier-block status.
  5. Buy only with a return policy if activation fails.

Storage and included accessories

Internal storage is 64GB, with a microSD slot officially listed for cards up to 1TB. A card helps with media and some games, but apps cannot always be moved completely to removable storage and card performance varies.

Used prices and availability

Swappa showed an unlocked starting price of $176 and an average price of $188 on August 17, 2026, based on only two listings (price data). Treat those figures as a small market snapshot, not a universal fair price. Demand a discount for weak battery health, missing accessories, uncertain carrier support, cosmetic damage or no return policy.

Back Market’s US page showed the unlocked model as currently unavailable when checked and warns that it lacks current operating-system compatibility: Back Market listing. Refurbished stock is therefore inconsistent.

Who should buy the Razer Phone 2?

A reasonable purchase

  • Collectors of discontinued gaming hardware.
  • Retro gamers and emulator users who want a distinctive secondary device.
  • Media users who specifically value loud front speakers and the 120Hz LCD.
  • Buyers who can verify battery, IMEI and carrier operation and obtain a returnable unit at a low price.

Skip it

  • Anyone seeking a primary phone, current security patches or dependable banking and authentication.
  • Users who need 5G, modern cameras or effortless US carrier activation.
  • Buyers unwilling to replace or manage an aging battery.
  • Anyone paying close to the price of a newer supported Android phone.

Final verdict

The Razer Phone 2 remains memorable gaming-phone history: its 120Hz 1440p LCD, excellent front speakers, wireless charging and Chroma styling still give it character. In 2026, however, its practical value is specialized. Buy a cheap, fully tested, returnable unit for retro gaming, media or collecting; otherwise, put the money toward a newer phone with active software support, 5G and a healthier battery.
