It can still suit everyday use, but its aging Snapdragon 695, limited camera system and uncertain remaining update life make it a sensible purchase only at a substantial discount—and only after checking the exact model’s carrier compatibility.
What the OPPO A98 5G is
“OPPO A98” generally refers to the OPPO A98 5G, model CPH2529 on OPPO’s global specification page. It is a 2023 A-series mid-ranger, not a current-generation 2026 phone. OPPO announced it in markets including Australia and Belgium, and regional configurations can differ. Check the model number and local specifications rather than assuming an imported handset is identical to local stock. Price, availability and whether it is worth buying
There is no single dependable 2026 price for the A98: it is an older model, and remaining stock may be local, imported, used or refurbished. Kimovil showed offers from roughly $322 on its August 2026 page snapshot, but this is a third-party marketplace signal, not an official OPPO price or a universal value recommendation. Judge the offer against newer phones available in your country, especially their performance and software-support commitments. At a modest discount, the A98 may make sense if you value fast charging, a large screen, stereo sound, wired headphones and expandable storage more than gaming speed or camera flexibility. At a price close to a newer mid-range phone, its age is difficult to justify.
- New local stock: compare its price with newer phones and confirm the local warranty and update status.
- Imported stock: require a meaningful discount to compensate for uncertain network compatibility, warranty service, charger configuration and regional software rollout.
- Used or refurbished: prioritize battery condition, charging function, support status and seller/refurbisher accountability over cosmetic appearance.
Design, display and durability
Large 120Hz LCD
The 6.72-inch screen has FHD+ resolution (2400 × 1080), a stated density of 391ppi and a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. Scrolling and supported games can look smoother than on a standard 60Hz screen, while the resolution is suitably sharp for the size. OPPO lists typical brightness of 550 nits and sunlight brightness up to 680 nits; these are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements.
This is an LCD, not an OLED or AMOLED panel. LCD avoids OLED-specific burn-in concerns, but generally cannot produce the same deep blacks and contrast. If you watch dark video often or specifically want OLED image quality, this is a material compromise. OPPO also lists 240Hz touch sampling, 8-bit color and a 91.4% screen-to-body ratio. Size, finish and protection
At about 192g and 8.2mm thick, the A98 is a large phone. OPPO offered finishes including Cool Black and Dreamy Blue, with Bold Gold available in some markets; the OPPO Glow back is designed to add texture and reduce visible fingerprints. OPPO lists laboratory stress tests for components such as the power button, USB connector and frame, but those tests do not establish an IP water-resistance rating or guarantee protection from accidental damage. Performance: good for everyday tasks, dated for gaming
The Snapdragon 695 5G, Adreno 619 graphics, 8GB of physical RAM and UFS 2.2 storage are a balanced mid-range combination from the phone’s generation. Messaging, browsing, navigation, streaming and ordinary office apps are reasonable use cases; casual and many mainstream games should be playable at moderate settings. It is not a strong choice for demanding games, high graphics settings or buyers seeking performance headroom for years of heavier apps.
OPPO advertises up to 8GB of RAM expansion. This uses storage as memory assistance; it is not equivalent to adding 8GB of physical LPDDR RAM and should not be treated as doubling the phone’s real memory. The chipset and storage type also make this a poorer value if gaming performance per dollar is the priority.
Battery and 67W charging
The battery is rated at 5,000mAh typical capacity and 4,880mAh rated capacity. OPPO advertises charging from empty to 50% in 18 minutes and to full in 44 minutes under its laboratory conditions. It also publishes usage estimates including up to 39 hours of calls and up to 16 hours of video, and says five minutes of charging can provide up to six hours of calls under laboratory conditions. These are company test claims, not guaranteed results for every user or handset. Screen brightness, signal strength, apps, battery age, charger and cable affect actual runtime and charging.
An independent review reported a full charge in roughly 40–45 minutes and about 14 hours 14 minutes in its PCMark battery test; results depend on the test method and firmware. Read the review’s test report.

Battery Health Engine and used units
OPPO says its Battery Health Engine is designed to manage charging behavior and reduce lithium degradation, and claims more than 80% capacity after as many as 1,600 charging cycles under its stated laboratory assumptions. That is not a guarantee for each phone. Heat, charging habits, age, use and battery replacement all matter, so the current condition of a used A98 is more useful than its original-cycle claim. Cameras: one main camera, plus a niche microscope
The 64MP f/1.7 autofocus main camera does most of the practical photography work. The other rear units are a 2MP monochrome/depth-related camera and a 2MP microscope camera with a claimed 40x microscope mode. That microscope feature can be entertaining for close-up subjects, but it is not a substitute for an ultrawide or telephoto camera. OPPO’s listed system has no ultrawide camera.
Some marketing refers to 108MP image output; this is computational super-resolution from the camera system, not a native 108MP sensor. The 32MP front camera is fixed-focus. Rear and front recording top out at 1080p/30fps; slow motion is listed at 720p/120fps, with electronic stabilization at 1080p or 720p/30fps. Video buyers who want 4K recording should look elsewhere. Software and remaining update life
The A98 launched with ColorOS 13.1 in the Android 13 generation. OPPO’s ColorOS 14 rollout page lists the A98 5G among devices receiving that version, while rollout timing can differ by region, device and carrier. A third-party specification database reports an Android 15/ColorOS 15 update, but that should not be assumed for every regional model without checking the individual handset. OPPO UK describes a minimum three-year security-update period following product launch for smartphones and tablets, while noting that applicable models and actual updates depend on updates received by the device. Since the A98 dates to 2023, do not assume a long future support window in 2026. The available official information does not establish a clear final security-patch date for every region and variant. Before buying, open Settings → About device → Software update and note the installed ColorOS version and security-patch date. Menu wording may vary by regional build. A version rollout listing alone does not mean every market received it at the same time or that the A98 gets every feature offered on newer OPPO phones.

OPPO lists 5G, dual SIM, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.1, NFC, USB-C and positioning support for GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou and QZSS. Band configurations differ by regional variant. In particular, a US buyer should not infer carrier compatibility from the A98 name or the presence of 5G: matching a band does not by itself guarantee activation, VoLTE or carrier approval.
- Confirm the exact model number printed in the phone’s settings and on its packaging.
- Compare that variant’s LTE and 5G bands with the carrier’s supported bands and device requirements.
- Ask the carrier whether the handset can be activated and whether VoLTE and 5G provisioning are supported.
- Verify NFC on the specific regional model if contactless payments matter; availability can vary.
- Confirm warranty coverage in your country and whether the included charger and plug suit your region.

Audio, storage and practical features
The A98 includes dual stereo speakers, a 3.5mm headphone jack, fingerprint sensing, facial recognition, USB OTG and microSD support advertised up to 1TB. OPPO says Ultra Volume Mode 2.0 can raise output by up to 200% in supported conditions; treat that as a manufacturer feature claim rather than a measure of distortion-free loudness. A memory card is not included by virtue of the support specification, and removable storage is slower than internal storage for many tasks. Who should buy the OPPO A98 5G?
It may suit
- A bargain buyer who finds a substantially discounted, working unit with a healthy battery.
- A multimedia user who values the large smooth screen, stereo speakers and headphone jack over OLED contrast.
- A practical everyday user who wants fast charging, expandable storage and does not rely on demanding games or advanced photography.
Look elsewhere if
- You want OLED contrast, high-end gaming performance, 4K recording or an ultrawide camera.
- You need a long, clearly established future security-support commitment.
- You are buying an import without confirmed carrier activation, warranty and regional software details.
- The price approaches newer mid-range models that offer stronger hardware or a longer support commitment.
What to inspect before buying used or refurbished
- In Settings → About device, confirm the model and record the ColorOS version and security-patch date.
- Check battery condition through any available device diagnostics, then test charging with a known-compatible SUPERVOOC adapter and cable. Slow charging can also result from a non-original charger or a worn USB-C port.
- Inspect the display for damage and test touch response, cameras, fingerprint sensor, speakers, headphone jack and USB-C connection.
- Confirm the exact regional variant works with your carrier and that warranty or refurbishment coverage is documented.
- Check whether the seller has replaced the battery and whether the replacement is genuine or documented; a phone’s past charging history cannot be inferred from OPPO’s lab claim.
If fitting a screen protector, note OPPO’s warning that dark or low-transmission protectors can affect the concealed ambient-light sensor. OPPO sensor and accessory notes.
Verdict
The OPPO A98 5G remains a capable basic-use and multimedia phone when bought cheaply, locally supported and in sound condition. Its strongest case is convenience—fast charging, a big 120Hz screen, stereo audio and expandable storage—not camera versatility, gaming power or long-term software certainty. Treat a 2026 purchase as a price-and-condition decision, and walk away if the seller cannot establish the exact model, network compatibility or update status.
