To permanently remove deleted messages on an iPhone, open the app that manages the account and empty that account’s Trash (also called Deleted Mail, Deleted Items or Bin). In Apple Mail, select every message in the account’s Trash mailbox and tap Delete. In Gmail, use Gmail → Menu → Trash → Empty trash now. Other providers expose their own empty or delete-all control.

Check the account name before confirming: an iPhone can contain several mail accounts, and emptying one Trash folder does not clear the others.

Quick answer: choose your mail app

  • Apple Mail: Open Mailboxes, choose the account’s Trash or Deleted Mail folder, select all messages, then tap Delete.
  • Gmail: Open Gmail → Menu → Trash → Empty trash now, then confirm.
  • Yahoo Mail, Outlook and other apps: Open the provider’s Trash/Deleted folder and use its Empty, Delete all or selection command. If that control is absent, sign in to the provider’s website in Safari.

Empty Trash in Apple Mail

  1. Open Mail.
  2. Tap Mailboxes repeatedly until the top-level mailbox list appears.
  3. Under the correct account, open Trash, Deleted Mail, or the provider’s equivalent.
  4. Tap More or Edit, then tap Select.
  5. Tap Select All when it is available. Apple documents this option in List View; otherwise select messages manually.
  6. Tap the Delete or trash-can button and confirm if iOS asks.

Apple’s current instructions document bulk selection and deletion, but they do not promise a universal one-tap Empty Trash button for every account. You may need to repeat the process for each account. The All Trash mailbox is a combined view; treat each account’s mailbox separately when permanently deleting mail.

Apple’s Mail guidance is available in the iPhone and iPad Mail instructions and the current iPhone User Guide.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Empty Gmail Trash on an iPhone

  1. Open the Gmail app.
  2. Tap the Menu button in the upper-left.
  3. Tap Trash. In some countries or language settings, this folder is called Bin.
  4. Tap Empty trash now.
  5. Confirm permanent deletion.

Gmail automatically removes messages from Trash after 30 days, but emptying it sooner removes Gmail’s normal recovery path. When selecting a large quantity of mail, Gmail may select up to 50 messages initially; return to the top and continue selecting if more remain. See Google’s Gmail instructions for iPhone and iPad.

Empty Yahoo, Outlook or another provider’s Trash

Yahoo Mail

Open Yahoo Mail, open Trash, then use Empty, Delete all or the folder’s selection control. Yahoo’s mobile controls can differ between the app and mobile website, so use the provider’s website in Safari if the command is missing. Yahoo normally deletes Trash contents automatically after seven days. Refer to Yahoo’s Trash instructions and its retention guidance.

Outlook and other accounts

In the provider’s iOS app, open Deleted, Deleted Items or Trash, then select messages and choose the app’s delete-all command. Work, school and IMAP accounts can use different labels and retention rules. If Apple Mail does not offer the required control, the provider’s app or website is the authoritative place to empty server-side mail.

When Apple Mail shows Archive instead of Trash

An account can be configured to move discarded messages into Archive. Change that account’s setting:

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Mail → Mail Accounts.
  2. Tap the affected account.
  3. Tap Account Settings → Advanced.
  4. Under Move Discarded Messages Into, choose Deleted Mailbox, not Archive Mailbox.

The available choices depend on the account type. Afterward, Mail should route the delete gesture to the account’s Trash/Deleted mailbox. Apple documents this setting in its Mail support article.

If Trash is missing or there is no empty command

  • Tap Mailboxes until the full account list is visible, then expand collapsed accounts.
  • Check alternate names: Deleted Mail, Deleted Items, Bin or Recently Deleted.
  • On the Mailboxes screen, tap Edit and enable the account’s Trash/Deleted mailbox.
  • Enable All Trash if you need a combined view of deleted messages across accounts; Apple explains this in the iPhone User Guide.
  • Confirm the account is enabled under Settings → Apps → Mail → Mail Accounts.
  • Pull down in the mailbox to refresh synchronization.
  • For a missing control or a very large folder, sign in through the provider’s website in Safari.

Understand what “empty Trash” does

  • Deleting a message from Inbox normally moves it to Trash, Deleted Items or Bin; it does not permanently remove it.
  • Emptying that folder permanently deletes the messages from the provider’s account and is generally irreversible.
  • Archive removes a message from Inbox but keeps it in the account, often under All Mail.
  • Removing the Mail app or removing an account from the iPhone does not by itself delete the provider account or its server-side messages.
  • Emptying Trash affects only messages already in that Trash folder. It does not delete mail still in Inbox, Archive, Sent or other folders.

Recover a message before emptying Trash

Do not empty the folder if you may need a message. Open Trash, open the message, tap the move/mailbox control and move it to Inbox or another mailbox. Gmail keeps deleted messages for up to 30 days unless you permanently delete them first. iCloud Mail does not retain deleted messages longer than 30 days. Yahoo’s default Trash period is seven days. Other providers set their own limits.

If deleted messages return

A synchronization delay, account configuration issue or deletion in one app that has not reached the server can make messages reappear. Sign in to the provider’s website and inspect the server-side Trash. If the messages remain there, empty that folder on the website; if they are absent online but still visible on the iPhone, refresh Mail and verify the account settings.

Does emptying Trash free iPhone or iCloud storage?

It can reduce mail retained by the provider and may reduce cached mail data over time, but it is not a guaranteed or immediate way to clear iPhone storage. Permanently deleting iCloud Mail can contribute to iCloud-storage savings, although Photos, backups, attachments and other data may be the larger consumers. Apple’s storage guidance is at Manage your iCloud storage.
