TP-Link Announces Two New Wi‑Fi 6 Routers: Archer AX6000 and AX11000

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On December 10, 2018, TP-Link announced its first wave of consumer 802.11ax (now called Wi‑Fi 6) routers: the dual-band Archer AX6000 and the tri-band Archer AX11000. The AX6000 targeted high-density smart homes, while the AX11000 added a second 5GHz radio and gaming-focused software for heavier wireless contention. Their prices and availability below are historical launch details, not current 2026 retail guidance.

What TP-Link announced

The two routers shared the main Wi‑Fi 6 features TP-Link was promoting in 2018: OFDMA, downlink and uplink MU‑MIMO, 160MHz channels and 1024-QAM. Both were announced with a 2.5Gbps WAN port, eight Gigabit LAN ports, USB-A 3.0 and USB-C 3.0, a 1.8GHz quad-core processor, and HomeCare security, parental-control and quality-of-service tools. See TP-Link’s announcement at TP-Link’s December 10, 2018 release.

Archer AX6000: the high-capacity generalist

The AX6000 was a dual-band router. TP-Link rated its 2.4GHz radio at up to 1,148Mbps and its 5GHz radio at up to 4,804Mbps, for a combined theoretical rate of 5,952Mbps, rounded to the AX6000 class name. Its intended uses included smart-home device density, streaming, virtual reality, gaming and office networking.

The AX6000 product page also lists Bluetooth-assisted setup through the Tether app, guest networks, VPN functions, WPA/WPA2/WPA3 support and OneMesh support. Features can vary by hardware revision and firmware; the V1 page is marked End of Life, so the 2018 announcement should not be read as a current-product launch.

Archer AX11000: the tri-band gaming flagship

The AX11000 used three bands: one 2.4GHz radio rated up to 1,148Mbps and two separate 5GHz radios rated up to 4,804Mbps each. Their combined theoretical rate was 10,756Mbps, rounded to AX11000. The second 5GHz network lets a busy household spread compatible devices across two 5GHz radios; it does not give one phone, laptop or console a 10,756Mbps connection.

TP-Link positioned this model as its gaming-series flagship. Its Game Center software included gaming statistics, bandwidth allocation, Gaming Accelerator features, VPN-tunnel tools and Game Protector security features. The hardware retained the same 2.5Gbps WAN port, eight Gigabit LAN ports and USB-A/USB-C 3.0 connectivity. The AX11000 product page lists three Wi‑Fi co-processors alongside the 1.8GHz quad-core CPU.

AX6000 versus AX11000

Feature Archer AX6000 Archer AX11000
Wireless bands Dual-band Tri-band
2.4GHz maximum 1,148Mbps 1,148Mbps
5GHz maximum 4,804Mbps on one band 4,804Mbps on each of two bands
Aggregate advertised rate 5,952Mbps 10,756Mbps
Primary positioning High-density smart home and general networking Gaming and heavier wireless contention
U.S. launch price $349.99; pre-order December 10, 2018 $449.99; planned for late January 2019

The practical distinction is the AX11000’s additional 5GHz radio and its gaming controls. The $100 launch premium was primarily for more scheduling capacity and gaming-oriented management, not a proportional increase in every user’s internet speed. Both routers still offered the unusually large combination of eight wired Gigabit ports and a 2.5Gbps WAN connection.

What Wi‑Fi 6 changed

More efficient airtime sharing

OFDMA divides a channel into smaller resource units so a router can serve multiple clients in one transmission opportunity. That is most useful when many devices are active, especially devices sending small or intermittent packets.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

More simultaneous streams

MU‑MIMO supports concurrent downlink and uplink transmissions with compatible clients. A second 5GHz radio, as used by the AX11000, further separates groups of clients instead of forcing every 5GHz device onto one radio.

Higher peak modulation

1024-QAM and 160MHz channels can raise link rates under favorable signal conditions. TP-Link also claimed up to four times the capacity of earlier AC/Wi‑Fi 5 routers in dense-use scenarios; that is a vendor claim tied to features such as OFDMA and MU‑MIMO, not a universal throughput guarantee.

TP-Link AXE5400 Tri-Band WiFi 6E Router, 2025 PCMag Editors' Choice
  • Tri-Band WiFi 6E Router - Up to 5400 Mbps WiFi for faster browsing, streaming, gaming and downloading, all at the same time(6 GHz: 2402 Mbps;5 GHz: 2402 Mbps;2.4 GHz: 574 Mbps)
  • WiFi 6E Unleashed – The 6 GHz band brings more bandwidth, faster speeds, and near-zero latency; Enables more responsive gaming and video chatting
  • Connect More Devices—True Tri-Band and OFDMA technology increase capacity by 4 times to enable simultaneous transmission to more devices
  • Unique Design, More RAM, Better Processing - A unique housing design provides optimal heat dissipation, combined with a 1.0 GHz dual-core CPU and 512 MB High-Speed Memory, the AXE75 is designed for long-term reliability and performance.
  • EasyMesh-compatible - Extend network range even more by adding EasyMesh-compatible routers, extenders, or wireless powerline adapters for a seamless, whole-home connection. Eliminate dead zones, drops, and lag as you move across your home.

These routers were announced while 802.11ax was still described as a draft specification. TP-Link’s release warned that features such as 160MHz channels and MU‑MIMO require compatible clients. Older Wi‑Fi 5 devices can connect, but they cannot use the full set of Wi‑Fi 6 capabilities.

How to interpret the speed numbers

  • AX ratings are aggregates: 5,952Mbps and 10,756Mbps add theoretical radio link rates across bands. They are not single-device speeds.
  • Internet speed is separate: A broadband plan, modem or optical network terminal, Ethernet link, remote server and congestion can all cap internet transfers below the wireless link rate.
  • Local traffic can still benefit: Fast client-to-client transfers, network storage and multiple simultaneous streams may use capacity even when the internet plan is slower.
  • Coverage is not guaranteed: Walls, floors, interference, antenna placement and regional transmit-power limits determine usable range. A mesh system or wired access points may solve dead zones better than one faster router.

Who each model suited at launch

Choose the AX6000 conceptually for

  • A smart-home household wanting high aggregate capacity without a dedicated gaming band.
  • A setup that needs eight wired LAN connections.
  • Users with multi-gigabit-capable modem or ONT equipment, provided their clients and wiring support it.
  • Homes containing many Wi‑Fi 5 devices that did not need the AX11000’s second 5GHz radio.

Choose the AX11000 conceptually for

  • Gaming, streaming and general-use devices competing heavily for wireless airtime.
  • Households able to assign gaming devices to one 5GHz band and other traffic to the other.
  • Buyers who valued Game Center controls and accepted the higher launch price.

Neither model was an automatic answer for a small apartment, a sub-gigabit plan with few devices, or a large home whose main problem was poor room-to-room coverage. The announcement specified no 10GbE port: wired connectivity was one 2.5Gbps WAN port plus eight 1Gbps LAN ports.

Bottom line

TP-Link’s 2018 announcement offered two different interpretations of early Wi‑Fi 6. The AX6000 was the high-capacity, dual-band smart-home option; the AX11000 added a second 5GHz radio and gaming management for households with more simultaneous wireless demand. Their AX6000 and AX11000 labels described combined theoretical link rates, while actual internet performance depended on clients, wired equipment, broadband service and radio conditions.
