How to Use Fake GPS on Android (and Turn It Off Safely)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On most Android phones, you can simulate a location without root by enabling Developer options, selecting a mock-location app, and starting a location in that app. The setting and its label vary by manufacturer, and individual apps may ignore or detect mock locations.

What fake GPS changes—and what it does not

“Fake GPS” usually means a mock location supplied through Android’s location framework. It is useful for testing how an app responds to a different position. Android exposes mock status to apps through its location APIs, so this is not a guarantee that a target app will accept the location. See Android’s LocationManager documentation.

  • A mock location supplies simulated coordinates through Android’s location framework.
  • A VPN changes the apparent network origin or IP address; by itself, it does not set the phone’s GPS coordinates.
  • Location permissions determine whether an app can access location. Limiting permission does not create a different location.
  • Emulator simulation supplies a location to a virtual Android device for development and testing.

A mock-location app normally changes the location provider data available to apps. It does not automatically change the phone’s IP address, Wi-Fi or cellular environment, sensor readings, account history, or every signal an app might use.

Before you start

  • The steps below describe Android’s standard mock-location workflow; root is generally not required for it. Menu labels, availability, and app compatibility vary by phone and software version.
  • Keep Location enabled, and make sure the app you want to test has location permission. On supported devices, Android lets you manage approximate and precise access separately. See Android’s location-permission guidance and how to manage app location settings.
  • Use mock locations for legitimate testing. Do not rely on them for emergency response, navigation where safety depends on an accurate position, identity or banking checks, delivery verification, or other workflows that require trustworthy location.

Enable Developer options

  1. Open Settings, then open About phone or About device.
  2. Find Build number. It may be inside another submenu, such as software information.
  3. Tap Build number seven times, or continue until Android confirms that developer mode is enabled. If prompted, enter your screen lock.
  4. Return to Settings and open System → Developer options, if that path is available on your phone.

Manufacturers arrange these menus differently, so search Settings for “Build number” or “Developer options” if the paths do not match. Do not change unrelated developer settings.

  • Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
  • Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.
  • Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.

Install and select a mock-location app

Install a compatible app from a reputable official app store, then check the publisher, recent update history, permissions, reviews, and privacy disclosures. A mock-location utility should not need unrelated sensitive access such as SMS, contacts, or accessibility privileges. Review its store listing’s data-safety information as well; disclosures are supplied by developers and can change. See Google Play’s data-safety information. Avoid APK mirrors, modified packages, and tools promising to defeat detection.

  1. Install one mock-location app to start, which avoids confusion over which provider is selected.
  2. Open Settings → System → Developer options and look for Select mock location app. On some devices it may be under Debugging or elsewhere in Developer options.
  3. Choose the app you installed. Older Android versions may use the label Allow mock locations; the wording and availability differ across devices. Android’s API documentation describes the mock-location mechanism and its requirements: LocationManager.

Set and check a simulated location

  1. Open the selected mock-location app.
  2. Search for a place or move its map pin to the point you want to test.
  3. Tap the app’s Start, Play, or equivalent control. The exact label and available controls are app-specific.
  4. Open a map or other location display and check whether the reported position matches the chosen point.
  5. Test the app you actually care about. A map following the mock location is only a basic check; it does not establish that every app will receive or accept it.

The target app still needs location permission. On supported Android versions, permission choices can include access while in use, always, ask every time, or not allowed; the options shown depend on the device and app. See Android location permissions.

Stop fake GPS and restore the real location

  1. Stop the simulation in the mock-location app.
  2. Return to Settings → System → Developer options → Select mock location app.
  3. Select None, Nothing, or the equivalent option if your phone offers one.
  4. Reopen the app whose location you tested, or restart its location session, then check that the device reports its actual position.
  5. If you no longer need the utility, uninstall it. Disabling Developer options alone should not be treated as confirmation that the mock app selection has been cleared; check the selection directly.

Troubleshoot common problems

The mock-location setting is missing

  • Confirm Developer options are enabled and that a compatible mock-location app is installed.
  • Search Settings for “mock location” or “Developer options”; manufacturers may move or rename the control.
  • A managed work or school device, or other device restrictions, may limit access. If the setting remains unavailable, consult the phone maker or administrator.
  • Restart Settings or reboot the phone after installing the app, then check again.

The target app still shows the real position

  1. Confirm Location is on and the target app has location permission.
  2. Check that the intended mock app is selected and that its simulation is running.
  3. Stop and restart the simulation, then force-close and reopen the target app.
  4. Check a basic map or location display. If that also fails, the mock provider may not be active; if it works there but not in the target app, that app may use other signals, cached data, or checks that reject mock locations.

The marker jumps back or the app reports a mock location

A mock provider can be stopped, outweighed by other location sources, or rejected by the target app. Android lets apps identify mock-location status through its location APIs, so there is no universal way to guarantee acceptance. Do not try to bypass an app’s integrity, anti-cheat, fraud, identity, or safety controls.

For app development, use the Android Emulator

If you are testing software rather than changing a physical phone’s position, Google’s Android Emulator provides built-in location simulation. Start an Android Virtual Device, open the emulator’s Extended controls → Location, choose a point, and select Set location. The controls also support route simulation and GPX/KML import. See Emulator Extended controls and Android Emulator documentation.

Privacy, safety, and app restrictions

Location is sensitive information. Google Play’s policies place requirements on apps that access it, including additional conditions for background access; these are primarily developer obligations, not a promise that any particular app will accept simulated coordinates. See Google Play’s location permissions policy and background location guidance.

For a mock-location app, avoid granting permissions that do not fit its purpose, and do not install tools marketed as undetectable. A service may rely on network data, its own server-side records, last-known location, or integrity checks, and location manipulation may violate that service’s rules or trigger restrictions. Google Play’s cited policies do not establish a blanket prohibition on every mock-location utility; evaluate the app and the service you intend to use separately.
