Early October 2017 reports linked Gionee’s S11 family to China’s TENAA certification database, but the clearest contemporaneous report specifically named the Gionee S11S. Other coverage called it the S11, blurring two related phones. The listing was a pre-launch signal, not proof of a global release or confirmation that every reported specification would appear in the retail S11.
What the TENAA report meant
TENAA is China’s telecommunications equipment certification authority. A handset appearing in its database is a regulatory milestone for the Chinese market: it can make device images and preliminary hardware details public and often indicates that a launch is approaching. It is not a sales announcement, a guarantee of availability outside China, or confirmation of international pricing, software support, or final retail specifications.
On October 1, 2017, Gizmochina reported that the Gionee S11S had appeared on TENAA. On October 4, Gizbot described the Gionee S11 as receiving certification. A later report referred to certified models as S11SL and S11S, while noting that the retail S11 appeared in Gionee promotional material. The available contemporaneous coverage therefore supports saying that the S11 family was approaching launch; it does not establish that one unambiguous TENAA record corresponded only to the retail S11.
Gizmochina’s October 1 S11S report, Gizbot’s October 4 S11 coverage, and Helpix’s later account of the model-name discrepancy reflect that naming overlap.

What the early S11S-linked specifications suggested
TENAA-oriented coverage most consistently described the higher-end S11S with a 6.01-inch, 2160 × 1080 AMOLED FullView display, 6 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, and a 3,600 mAh battery. It also reported dual rear cameras of 16 MP and 8 MP and dual front cameras of 20 MP and 8 MP. These are reported specifications, not a guarantee that every detail applied to the retail S11.
The same reporting described an octa-core processor running at 2.5 GHz. Gizmochina identified it at the time as a Helio P25, but the S11S announced later used a MediaTek Helio P30. The early processor identification should therefore be treated as preliminary rather than as the final S11S specification. MicroSD expansion up to 128 GB and Android 7.1/7.1.1 with Gionee’s Amigo interface also appeared in early reporting; those details should not be generalized to every variant.

How the announced S11 and S11S differed
Gionee officially announced the S11 and S11S in China on November 26, 2017. Launch-era coverage distinguished the standard S11 from the S11S in display size, processor, battery, cameras, and price. The S11’s reported rear-camera pair was 16 MP plus 5 MP—not the S11S-linked 16 MP plus 8 MP pair often carried into early S11-family stories.

The figures above are launch-era reported specifications, not results from independent camera or performance testing. Prices are the announced China prices, not U.S. retail prices.
What “four cameras” and “FullView” meant
“Four cameras” referred to two rear cameras and two front cameras, not four cameras on the back. The secondary sensors were associated with portrait-style imaging, but the camera count alone does not establish image quality or prove how well portrait effects worked.

“FullView” was Gionee’s branding for the series’ taller 18:9 displays and narrower bezels. The S11 family also fit the late-2017 push toward glass-bodied phones and camera-focused marketing. The official announcement came on November 26, 2017, about two months after the first S11S TENAA report. Gionee announced the S11 for 1,799 yuan and the S11S for 3,299 yuan, with December availability planned in China. Those prices do not establish a U.S. MSRP or confirm distribution in any other country. FoneArena’s launch report also recorded the China pricing and planned availability.

The certification reports did not establish the phones’ international bands or configurations, real-world camera performance, or whether Gionee would provide later Android or security updates. Launch-era coverage listed Android 7.1.1 Nougat with Amigo OS 5.0 for the S11; that does not by itself show that the handset received subsequent major Android upgrades.
Why this is now an archival handset story
The S11 is a 2017 release, not a newly announced phone. A later Gadgets 360 specification page identifies it as a November 2017 model; that historical listing does not establish current official availability or active support. Anyone considering a used unit should verify its condition and regional compatibility rather than assume it is a supported current product.
