Opera released its power-saving feature to the public in Opera 38 for computers on June 8, 2016. Called Power Saving Mode during early testing and Battery Saver in the stable-release announcement, it was designed to reduce browser activity on laptops running on battery. Opera claimed up to 50% longer browsing in its own tests; that was a best-case vendor result, not a guarantee for every laptop or a comparison of today’s browsers.
When Opera’s power-saving feature became public
The feature moved through Opera’s testing channels before reaching the stable browser. The distinction matters: the May announcements described developer and beta availability, while June 8 was the public stable release.
| Date | Release stage | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| May 12, 2016 | Developer | Opera introduced Power Saving Mode in its developer stream. Opera’s developer announcement |
| May 18, 2016 | Beta | The feature appeared in the Opera 38 beta as the work moved toward a stable release. Opera 38 beta announcement |
| June 8, 2016 | Stable | Opera 38 for computers launched with Battery Saver available to the public. Stable-release announcement |
The release concerned Opera for computers, including laptops; it should not be generalized to Opera Mini, Opera for Android, or every Opera product. Opera’s June 2016 press release also described reduced laptop overheating as a benefit.
How to turn it on in Opera 38
These are the controls documented for Opera 38 in 2016. The exact labels, location, and behavior may differ in current Opera versions.

What Battery Saver changed
Opera described a set of browser-level changes intended to reduce unnecessary processing and rendering while a laptop was unplugged. The aim was to preserve ordinary browsing while asking less of the processor and graphics hardware.
- Reduced activity in background tabs and used JavaScript timer scheduling intended to cause fewer CPU wake-ups.
- Paused unused plug-ins and reduced nonessential browser activity. Plug-ins were a historically specific part of the 2016 implementation; this description does not establish how current Opera handles them.
- Reduced the frame rate to 30 frames per second and paused animations associated with browser themes.
- Adjusted video playback and encouraged hardware-accelerated video codecs in relevant situations, where hardware and driver support allowed.
These measures changed Opera’s own behavior, not the computer’s entire power profile. They could not prevent a demanding website from using substantial CPU or make an aging battery hold more charge. Opera’s feature and testing description and Opera’s beta announcement

What Opera’s “up to 50%” figure measured
Opera said its developer-build test ran 50% longer than browsers such as Google Chrome under its chosen conditions. This was Opera’s result, not an independent finding or an expected gain for each user.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Opera described testing on Lenovo X250 and Dell XPS 13 laptops with Intel Core i7-5600U processors, 16 GB RAM, and 64-bit Windows 10. A Selenium WebDriver workload opened eleven popular websites, including YouTube, in separate tabs; scrolled each page five times; then left it inactive for one minute. The browsing cycle was repeated until the battery was depleted. Opera’s native ad blocker was enabled during the Battery Saver test, so the published headline result does not isolate the contribution of Battery Saver from that configuration.
In its earlier beta comparison, Opera reported about 49% longer browsing on a Dell Inspiron 7559 running Windows 10 with the Balanced power profile. That was a separate test setup, not a second measurement of the same machines and workload. Opera 38 beta announcement

Why real-world battery gains vary
“Up to 50%” describes a maximum Opera reported in a particular test, not an average or a promise. Battery life depends on the laptop, browser build, operating-system settings, extensions, websites, display, network, and what the user is doing. The 2016 result is not evidence that current Opera lasts 50% longer than current Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari.
Some activities leave less room for browser optimizations to help. Video calls, web games, WebGL applications, high-resolution streaming, and pages that keep scripts busy can continue to demand substantial resources. Many active tabs, resource-heavy extensions, a bright or high-refresh-rate display, an external monitor, USB-powered devices, or poor Wi-Fi reception can also dominate power use.

Browser rankings are sensitive to test design and versions. In a later comparison, Opera reported that its developer build ran 22% longer than Microsoft Edge and 35% longer than Chrome under specified Windows 10 conditions; Microsoft’s battery-efficiency testing and Opera’s response illustrate why results from different methodologies should not be treated as a universal ranking. Reducing rendering and background work can affect responsiveness. Animations or scrolling may look less smooth at a 30 fps cap; background tabs may update less often; video behavior may change; and older sites or applications that relied on plug-ins could be affected by pausing them.

- Turn Battery Saver off temporarily and see whether responsiveness returns.
- Check whether the problem is limited to one website.
- Close tabs you do not need and disable extensions that use substantial resources.
- Check the operating system’s power or efficiency settings separately.
- If Opera does not return to normal behavior after toggling the feature, restart the browser.
Battery Saver is not a system-wide power mode
Opera’s feature targeted browser activity. It was not Windows Battery Saver, macOS Low Power Mode, or a laptop maker’s power profile, and it could not control other apps, display brightness, connected devices, or the computer’s overall power policy. It could complement those controls, but it did not replace them.
What the current Opera feature page establishes
Opera’s current Battery Saver page uses the claim “browse up to an hour longer.” That confirms Battery Saver remains a named feature in Opera’s present-day marketing, but it does not establish that today’s interface or implementation is identical to Opera 38, or that the 2016 50% test applies to current browsers and hardware.
