The Xiaomi Mi 6X is a genuine 2018 Xiaomi smartphone launched primarily for China. Its hardware is closely related to the international Xiaomi Mi A2, but it is not the same software product: the Mi 6X used Xiaomi’s MIUI, while the Mi A2 was an Android One phone. In 2026, a Mi 6X can still handle basic phone tasks, but obsolete official support, 4G-only connectivity, aging batteries and China-ROM complications make it a poor primary phone.

What is the Xiaomi Mi 6X?

Xiaomi announced the Mi 6X in China on April 25, 2018. The international hardware counterpart was sold as the Xiaomi Mi A2. Calling the two phones identical is misleading: they share much of their hardware, but differ in software, regional configuration and sometimes network compatibility. The Mi 6X shipped with Xiaomi’s MIUI-based software, whereas the Mi A2 was marketed internationally through Google’s Android One program. Historical launch coverage is available from Android Authority and Mobile-Review.

Do not confuse either model with the separate, smaller Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite; Xiaomi lists that as a different product at its official specification page.

A Mi 6X listing that says “Mi A2” may be using the names loosely, showing the wrong photographs or describing a converted phone. Confirm the model number rather than relying on the title.

Design, display and everyday performance

The aluminum body is slim and light, and the 5.99-inch 18:9 LCD remains sharp enough for browsing, video and ordinary applications. Its limitations are equally clear in 2026: LCD contrast and outdoor visibility trail modern OLED panels, there is no high-refresh-rate mode, and the relatively narrow 18:9 format feels dated.

The Snapdragon 660 was a capable mid-range chip in 2018, not a current flagship processor. Today it is appropriate for calls, messaging, email, light web use, music, video playback, navigation, social apps and older or lightweight games. Demanding modern games, heavy multitasking and software requiring recent Android features will expose its age. App compatibility, storage pressure, thermals and battery condition matter more than launch-era benchmark scores; Notebookcheck’s review provides historical performance context.

Cameras: capable hardware, old processing

The dual rear system combines a 12MP Sony IMX486 with a 20MP Sony IMX376 and uses large f/1.75-class apertures. The 20MP front camera uses the IMX376, and recording reaches 4K at 30fps according to Xiaomi’s specification sheet.

At launch, daylight and portrait photography were among the phone’s stronger features. The second rear sensor should not be treated as a modern telephoto camera, however. Small sensors, older image processing and the lack of listed optical image stabilization limit night photography, HDR, stabilization and video compared with current phones. MIUI and Android One camera software can also produce different results.

Software, updates and ROM risks

What the Mi 6X shipped with

A China-market Mi 6X normally has MIUI and may include Chinese applications or limited Google integration. Used examples can instead have a seller-installed “global” ROM, an unofficial modification or an altered bootloader. A modified build may appear functional while failing updates, notifications, banking checks or Google certification later.

How the Mi A2 differs

The global Mi A2 shipped as an Android One phone with a near-stock Android interface and a separate update path. Android One branding describes its original product positioning; it does not guarantee current updates in 2026.

Official support versus custom ROMs

Xiaomi’s security database still lists the Mi 6X, but Xiaomi’s general policy says smartphones typically receive security updates for at least two years after first shipment. An eight-year-old Mi 6X should therefore be treated as outside normal official security support unless a specific regional page says otherwise. Check Xiaomi’s security-support database for the latest listing.

Community ROMs may extend usability for technically skilled owners, but they do not restore manufacturer support or guarantee banking, DRM, contactless-payment or streaming compatibility. Cross-flashing Mi A2 firmware is not universally safe: model mismatch can cause boot loops, radio, camera or fingerprint failures, anti-rollback problems, data loss or a bricked phone. Exact model, bootloader state, recovery requirements and maintainer instructions must be verified before any installation.

Network compatibility, especially in the United States

The phone has no 5G. The international Mi A2 specification lists LTE bands B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B7, B8, B20, B38 and B40, but a Chinese Mi 6X can differ. A band list alone does not prove service: US buyers must also check the exact model number, the carrier’s acceptance policy, VoLTE provisioning and whether compatible legacy networks have been retired. Voice service may fail even when LTE data connects.

Treat an imported Mi 6X in the United States as a compatibility-risk purchase, not a plug-and-play phone. Confirm calls, texts, emergency calling and VoLTE with the intended carrier before relying on it.

Battery, charging, storage and ports

The Mi A2 specification gives a 3,010mAh typical battery and 2,910mAh minimum rating, with 5V/2A USB-C charging. That capacity was modest at launch and is especially limited after years of chemical aging. Rapid percentage drops, sudden shutdowns, overheating and very short screen-on time indicate a worn cell.

A replacement battery can help if the handset is otherwise healthy, but it requires opening the phone and does not fix outdated security, carrier incompatibility, damaged storage or unsupported apps. The absence of a microSD slot makes the 64GB model easier to fill, while the missing 3.5mm jack means using USB-C audio or an adapter; not every inexpensive adapter is compatible.

Used-phone inspection checklist

  1. Ask for the exact model number and confirm it is a Mi 6X, not a Mi A2 Lite or another Xiaomi phone.
  2. Check About Phone for the MIUI build, Android version and signs of a seller-installed ROM.
  3. Verify Google Play Store and Play Services, then check Play Protect certification.
  4. Confirm whether the bootloader is locked or unlocked and whether the seller has modified it.
  5. Test SIM detection, LTE data, calls, texts and VoLTE on the intended carrier.
  6. Check battery behavior under use, USB-C charging, speakers, microphones, cameras and the fingerprint reader.
  7. Inspect the LCD for cracks, burn-in, dead pixels and abnormal touch response.
  8. Confirm IMEI status and ensure the storage and RAM match the listing.

Should you buy a Xiaomi Mi 6X in 2026?

It can make sense when

  • You need a very cheap secondary, offline music, navigation or camera device.
  • You are a collector or experienced Android hobbyist.
  • The price is low enough to cover a possible battery replacement.
  • The exact variant, ROM, Google-service status and carrier compatibility are verified.

Avoid it when

  • It will be your primary phone for banking, work or sensitive accounts.
  • You need 5G, long battery life, NFC, expandable storage, a headphone jack or current security updates.
  • The seller cannot identify the model or explain the “global” software.
  • The price approaches that of a much newer used phone.
  • The listing calls an old device “new” or claims an unverified battery capacity.

The Mi 6X is historically interesting and still usable for basic tasks, but its obsolete support and uncertain software make a newer used or entry-level Android phone the safer primary-device choice.
