How to Sync OneDrive Folders Using Symbolic Links (and Why Microsoft Doesn’t Support It)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: Windows can create a symbolic link or junction with mklink, but Microsoft does not support syncing OneDrive folders through either type of link. The link may appear in File Explorer and may work for an application, yet OneDrive can ignore it, report incomplete synchronization, or provide no reliable sync status. For important files, use a supported OneDrive location or a dedicated backup/synchronization tool.

Why people try symbolic links with OneDrive

A symbolic link changes the path Windows presents to a folder; it does not move, copy, or back up the folder. Common reasons for trying one include:

  • Keeping a large folder on D: while OneDrive is installed on C:.
  • Making an application’s fixed data path point to another disk.
  • Showing one folder at two paths without storing a second copy.
  • Trying to synchronize a folder outside the configured OneDrive directory.

These goals are understandable, but a filesystem redirect is not a second OneDrive sync relationship and does not create independent cloud version history.

Microsoft’s support position

Microsoft’s current OneDrive and SharePoint limitations explicitly list symbolic links and junction points as unsupported sync locations: OneDrive and SharePoint restrictions and limitations. Folder Backup has a related restriction: a Windows folder containing a junction or symbolic link cannot be protected until the link is removed (Back up your folders with OneDrive).

“Unsupported” does not mean that Windows always rejects the command. Windows may create the link, File Explorer may display it, and an application may read and write through it. It means Microsoft does not guarantee that OneDrive will traverse the link, upload every change, download cloud changes, preserve normal status indicators, or continue working after a restart or update. Microsoft Support may also ask you to remove the link before troubleshooting.

An older Microsoft page about synchronizing from a local path other than the default OneDrive path described missing status indicators in some linked-folder scenarios. That page now redirects to general sync troubleshooting, so it should not be treated as current support guidance: historical linked-folder article and current sync troubleshooting.

Symbolic link, junction, or hard link?

Windows treats symbolic links and junctions as reparse-point objects. Microsoft documents the command and its switches in the mklink reference.

Link type Typical command What it does OneDrive relevance
Directory symbolic link mklink /d Link Target Redirects a directory path to another directory. Unsupported for OneDrive synchronization.
Directory junction mklink /j Link Target Links one local directory path to another, including across local volumes. Also unsupported; it is not a safer official workaround.
Hard link mklink /h Link Target Gives a file another directory entry. Applies to files, not folders, and does not solve OneDrive folder syncing.

A link placed inside OneDrive that points outward, such as OneDriveExternal-Link → D:Data, leaves the real data outside the supported OneDrive root. A link outside OneDrive that points inward only offers another access path; it does not create an independent sync location.

The mklink procedure (unsupported experiment only)

Use this only with disposable data when you accept that the result may not synchronize reliably. Microsoft’s syntax is:

mklink [[/d] | [/h] | [/j]] <link> <target>

Before you start

  • Confirm that another backup or sync service is not modifying the same target.
  • Close applications using the folder and make a recoverable backup.
  • Do not use databases, Outlook data files, virtual machines, or other application-managed data unless the application vendor explicitly supports the arrangement.
  • Use a new link name that does not already exist.
  • Never assume that seeing the folder under OneDrive means a cloud copy exists.

Create a directory symbolic link

mklink /d "C:UsersYourNameOneDriveExternalData-Link" "D:ExternalData"

Or create a directory junction

mklink /j "C:UsersYourNameOneDriveExternalData-Link" "D:ExternalData"

The first path is the new link and must not already exist; the second is the real folder. Windows’ confirmation proves only that Windows created the reparse point. It does not prove OneDrive accepted the target.

Test without risking real data

  1. Create a disposable target folder and use a new link name. Do not replace an existing directory.
  2. Check the link at the Windows level:
    dir "C:UsersYourNameOneDrive"
    fsutil reparsepoint query "C:UsersYourNameOneDriveExternalData-Link"

The second command confirms a reparse point; it does not confirm OneDrive compatibility.

  3. Create a harmless file in the real target:
    echo test > "D:ExternalDataonedrive-link-test.txt"
  4. Look for that file in the OneDrive web interface, then create a separate test file online and see whether it reaches the target.
  5. Restart OneDrive and reboot Windows. Check again for missing files, “processing changes,” errors, or absent normal status icons.

A test that works once is evidence only of that particular configuration and moment. It is not a supported guarantee, and it should not justify moving irreplaceable data into the arrangement.

Remove a link safely

First verify the path is actually a symbolic link or junction:

dir "C:UsersYourNameOneDrive"

For a directory link, remove the link path with:

rmdir "C:UsersYourNameOneDriveExternalData-Link"

This is intended to remove the link itself, not the target folder. Do not run a recursive deletion command against the target, and stop if you are unsure whether the path is a real directory. Verify the target separately before deleting anything.

Supported ways to meet the same goal

Your actual need Supported approach Reason
Synchronize an arbitrary folder reliably Move it into the configured OneDrive folder and change the application’s path. OneDrive is designed to synchronize content in its root.
Keep the entire OneDrive library on another local drive Use OneDrive setup’s Change location option. Relocates the supported root instead of redirecting individual folders.
Reduce local disk usage Use Files On-Demand. Keeps selected content online-only while retaining OneDrive’s supported layout.
Protect Desktop, Documents, or Pictures Use OneDrive folder backup. It is purpose-built for supported Windows folders, subject to link and policy restrictions.
Keep an application folder at a fixed path Reconfigure the application if possible; otherwise use a separately evaluated backup or synchronization product. A dedicated tool can be selected for one-way backup, two-way sync, scheduling, versions, and conflict handling.

Move the folder into OneDrive

Close the application, move the folder into OneDrive, configure the application to use the new path, wait for synchronization, and verify the files online before removing the original copy. Microsoft describes the supported folder model and location selection in Sync your computer’s files and folders with OneDrive.

Change the OneDrive root

During OneDrive setup, select Change location and choose a local folder on the desired drive. This moves the entire OneDrive root; it does not selectively add unrelated folders from arbitrary paths.

Use folder backup where it applies

Folder Backup supports designated Windows folders such as Desktop, Documents, and Pictures. It is not a general-purpose import mechanism for every directory, and an organization may control it by policy. A parent containing a junction or symlink must have that link removed before protection can be enabled.

Use Files On-Demand for space savings

Files On-Demand lets supported OneDrive content remain online-only or be retained locally. In File Explorer, Free up space makes eligible content online-only, while Always keep on this device downloads and retains it. Some installations also expose Download all files. Behavior can vary with Windows Information Protection settings and OneDrive rollout status; see Microsoft’s Files On-Demand guidance.

Choose a dedicated backup or sync tool when necessary

If the real folder must remain at its original path, evaluate a product for the exact requirement: one-way backup versus two-way synchronization, version history, conflict resolution, encryption, scheduled jobs, locked-file handling, and reparse-point behavior. A backup preserves recoverable copies; two-way sync mirrors edits and can create conflicts. Neither category should be assumed to support symlinks safely without product-specific documentation.

Troubleshooting and edge cases

  • Folder visible but not uploading: visibility in File Explorer is not proof of OneDrive traversal. Remove the link and move the data into OneDrive for a supported setup.
  • No status icons or incomplete files: treat this as an unsupported-link symptom, not as evidence that a different link switch will fix it.
  • Folder Backup refuses the folder: inspect for junctions or symbolic links and remove them before retrying.
  • Target is a network or mapped drive: OneDrive does not support network or mapped drives as sync locations.
  • Long paths or unsupported names: OneDrive’s decoded path limit is 400 characters, and Windows or application limits may also apply. Individual files larger than 250 GB cannot be synced.
  • Multiple services touch the target: simultaneous changes can produce conflicts or divergent copies.
  • Work or school account: administrators can control folder backup, Files On-Demand, and other sync behavior through policy. See Microsoft’s OneDrive Group Policy documentation.
  • Outlook PST, databases, or virtual machines: file locking and consistency requirements make them poor candidates for an unsupported cloud-sync redirect; PST files also have special OneDrive handling.
  • macOS: Windows mklink commands do not apply, and macOS OneDrive limitations are separate.

Recommendation

Symbolic links and junctions are useful Windows filesystem tools, but they are not a dependable OneDrive integration method. Move the folder into OneDrive, relocate the OneDrive root, or use Files On-Demand when those options fit. If a folder must stay at a fixed external path, use a separately verified backup or synchronization solution rather than relying on an unsupported reparse-point arrangement.
