Verdict: The Xbox Series X is still Microsoft’s most capable traditional console, combining 4K-class output, a disc drive, excellent backward compatibility, fast loading and the Xbox/Game Pass ecosystem. In 2026, however, its value depends heavily on price. Microsoft’s August 1, 2026 increase adds $150 to 1TB models, making a sale, certified-refurbished unit or suitable financing much more attractive than buying blindly at full price. Choose it for physical games, Xbox libraries, Game Pass and a 4K/120Hz display; choose Series S for budget play, PS5 for Sony’s first-party catalog, or PC for broader software flexibility.

Xbox Series X price and model guide

The Series X launched in the United States on November 10, 2020, at $499. That launch price should not be used as a 2026 buying assumption. Microsoft announced a worldwide increase effective August 1, 2026: 1TB models rise by $150 and the 2TB model is being discontinued. The announcement does not publish a complete replacement U.S. price table, so verify the live listing at Xbox Wire before ordering.

Using Microsoft’s October 3, 2025 U.S. table as a baseline, the increase implies approximately $799.99 for the 1TB disc model and $749.99 for the 1TB digital model. Those are implied MSRPs, not independently confirmed current prices; treat the live Microsoft Store or retailer price as authoritative. Microsoft’s product page still references 1TB Carbon Black, 1TB Digital Edition and 2TB Galaxy Black variants, while the price announcement says the 2TB model is being sunset (product page; October 2025 price table).

Model What you get Who it suits
1TB disc Custom NVMe SSD, 4K UHD Blu-ray drive, physical-game support Most buyers, collectors and owners of disc libraries
1TB digital Same core performance without a disc drive Digital-only buyers when meaningfully cheaper
2TB Galaxy Black Double the listed capacity; availability is affected by the announced discontinuation Only if remaining stock is priced sensibly

Every standard package includes the console, one Xbox Wireless Controller and a power cable. Game Pass, extra storage and a vertical stand are not automatically included; check the exact SKU or bundle.

  • Bundled with HDMI_Cable

Microsoft says certified-refurbished consoles can be up to $100 below MSRP through Microsoft Stores, although stock and models vary. For a price-sensitive buyer, that discount is more meaningful than paying the elevated new-console price for an identical experience.

Design, ports and what is included

The Series X is a large, monolithic tower that can stand vertically or lie horizontally. Microsoft lists the disc model at 15.1 × 15.1 × 30.1 cm and 9.8 lb; the digital model has the same dimensions and weighs 7.9 lb (official specifications). Keep the top and rear vents unobstructed; vertical placement is not mandatory.

Ports include HDMI 2.1, three USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports and gigabit Ethernet, with 802.11ac dual-band Wi‑Fi. There is no optical-audio output. Windows Central found cooling broadly similar in either orientation but criticized the awkwardly stacked rear ports and missing optical connection (Windows Central review).

The standard disc model’s 4K UHD Blu-ray drive supports movie playback and compatible physical games. The digital edition removes that flexibility entirely: no used discs, lending, retailer disc discounts, compatible Xbox discs or 4K Blu-ray movies.

Controller

The included controller has textured triggers and bumpers, a hybrid D-pad and a dedicated Share button. It works with Xbox One accessories and controllers in many cases, and supports Xbox and PC use. Its familiar ergonomics and improved D-pad are strengths; AA batteries rather than a rechargeable pack, a sometimes-loud D-pad and the lack of PS5-style adaptive haptics are drawbacks. A rechargeable kit or replacement controller is an additional ownership cost.

Hardware and real-world performance

Microsoft specifies an eight-core custom Zen 2 CPU (3.8GHz, or 3.6GHz with SMT), a custom RDNA 2 GPU rated at 12 teraflops with 52 compute units at 1.825GHz, and 16GB of GDDR6 memory. The memory is split between 10GB at 560GB/s and 6GB at 336GB/s. Its 1TB custom NVMe SSD delivers 2.4GB/s raw and 4.8GB/s compressed throughput (Microsoft specifications).

These are capabilities, not guarantees. Microsoft advertises True 4K, up to 120fps, HDMI Variable Refresh Rate, AMD FreeSync and Auto Low Latency Mode. Individual games decide whether to use native or reconstructed/dynamic resolution, 30fps quality modes, 60fps performance modes or 120fps options. Ray tracing can lower resolution or frame rate, and a game must be patched for Series X|S features. A compatible HDMI 2.1 television or monitor, the correct input and settings are required for 4K at 120Hz and VRR.

For cross-platform games, practical differences from a PS5 are often subtle. The Series X’s advantage is consistent high-end console performance and access to Xbox-specific features, not a promise that every title renders at native 4K and 120fps.

Loading and Quick Resume

The SSD dramatically reduces boot, level and fast-travel waits compared with Xbox One hard drives. Quick Resume can suspend several compatible games and return you to them quickly, one of the platform’s clearest quality-of-life benefits (Tom’s Guide). It is not universal: online games may reconnect or reject a suspended session, and updates, crashes or reboots can clear saved states.

Storage: the practical weakness

The advertised 1TB is not all available to games because the operating system and reserved data occupy space. Measure the free capacity on the exact current SKU rather than relying on an old figure.

Storage Series X|S games Older Xbox games Best use
Internal NVMe SSD Store and play directly Store and play directly Active current-generation games
Xbox Storage Expansion Card Store and play directly; matches internal performance Store and play directly More native-capacity space
USB 3.1 HDD/SSD Store, but generally cannot play optimized titles directly Store and play directly Low-cost archive and older games

Microsoft documents these distinctions in its storage guide. Expansion cards match internal SSD performance but are proprietary and can be expensive; Windows Central notes that Seagate and WD_BLACK cards work well while remaining costly (review). A sensible budget setup keeps frequently played optimized games internally or on an expansion card and uses an ordinary USB drive as cold storage. Do not buy a generic USB SSD expecting it to run every optimized title.

Games, backward compatibility and ownership

Microsoft describes compatibility with thousands of Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games, often adding faster loading, higher resolution, steadier frame rates and lower input latency (Xbox Series X page). Enhancements can include FPS Boost, Auto HDR, higher-resolution rendering, Xbox One X or Series X|S patches and Smart Delivery. None applies to every title.

The catalog is extensive but selective: some older games remain unsupported, and a physical disc may act as a license to download a compatible version rather than contain a modern build. Digital ownership, a disc license and Game Pass access are different things; subscription access ends when the subscription ends unless you buy the game.

Xbox is increasingly an ecosystem rather than a single box. Cross-save, cross-play, cloud gaming, PC integration and Xbox Play Anywhere let supported games move between screens. Xbox stated in March 2026 that Play Anywhere had passed 1,500 games and 500 participating development teams (Xbox Wire). That is valuable for convenience, but it also means many Microsoft games are playable on PC or through other supported devices; the Series X is not automatically the only way to access them.

Game Pass: choose by behavior, not headline library size

Microsoft’s U.S. listing currently shows these plans; prices and catalogs change, promotions are temporary and availability varies by region.

Xbox Series X versus the alternatives

Series X versus Series S

Category Series X Series S
Target 4K-class, high-end console play Budget, casual or secondary-TV use
GPU 12-teraflop-class RDNA 2 Much weaker GPU
Storage Typically 1TB SSD 512GB model and 1TB versions
Disc drive Available on disc model None
Resolution target 4K-class Primarily 1440p-class

The Series S is not simply a smaller Series X. It trades GPU power, memory, storage and physical media for a lower entry price. Choose it for Game Pass and a 1080p/1440p display; choose Series X for a 4K screen, discs or longer performance headroom (Tom’s Guide comparison).

Series X versus PS5 and PS5 Pro

Series X offers broader backward compatibility, a stronger GPU specification on paper, Game Pass, Xbox-PC integration and a 4K Blu-ray drive on the standard model. PS5 has a stronger first-party reputation in much of this generation, DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers, and PS5 Pro provides a higher-end performance option that Xbox currently lacks. Tom’s Guide gives Xbox the edge in raw hardware and compatibility but favors PS5 for its game lineup, while noting that cross-platform differences are often modest (comparison).

Series X versus a gaming PC or Xbox One X

A PC offers mods, multiple storefronts, broader graphics settings, ultrawide displays and productivity, but a comparable build can cost more and requires more maintenance. An Xbox One X owner already has 4K output and a large compatible library; upgrading is most noticeable in SSD loading, Quick Resume, Series X|S patches and future support. If those improvements do not matter, wait for a discount.

Who should buy the Series X?

  • Buy it now: Xbox loyalists, Game Pass-heavy players, physical-game collectors, owners of large Xbox One/360 libraries, and 4K/120Hz or VRR television owners—provided the price is attractive.
  • Buy refurbished or on sale: price-sensitive buyers, Xbox One X owners and people who mostly play cross-platform games.
  • Choose Series S: casual players, secondary-TV users and anyone who does not need discs or maximum image quality.
  • Choose PS5: buyers prioritizing Sony’s first-party catalog and DualSense features.
  • Choose PC: players who value mods, storefront choice, ultrawide support or one machine for games and work.

Should you wait?

Microsoft announced development of its next-generation Xbox initiative, Project Helix, in March 2026, but the cited announcement gives no consumer launch date (official announcement). Buy now if you need a console and find a good deal. Wait if you already own a Series X, have no urgent games or reject the elevated 2026 price; do not wait solely on an unconfirmed release window.

Final verdict

The Series X remains the best traditional Xbox console: fast, quiet in ordinary use, highly compatible with older games and unusually flexible for physical media, Game Pass, PC and cloud play. Its main weaknesses are the 2026 price increase, expensive proprietary expansion storage, a smaller set of hardware-exclusive reasons to upgrade and game modes that do not guarantee native 4K/120fps. At the implied new MSRP, it is not an automatic recommendation. A discounted or certified-refurbished disc model is the strongest buy; the digital edition makes sense only for a committed digital buyer who saves enough to offset the lost drive.
