Samsung says the fully opened phone’s angle can be between 178.5° and 181.5°. It also says the camera assembly can keep the phone from resting level on a table, so a tabletop wobble is not a reliable hinge test.
What owners and reviewers reported
After the Galaxy Z Fold7 launched in July 2025, shoppers reported that some retail demonstration units seemed to stop at a slight V rather than forming a straight plane. Some accounts described an angle around 178° to 179°. Other store units and review samples appeared to open flat. These are observations of individual phones, not a measured failure rate or proof that all Fold7s share a hinge problem.
Android Authority reported the retail-unit observations, while Android Central noted that reports differed. Reviewers also disagreed: TechRadar’s review and Ars Technica’s review reflect different hands-on impressions, not a controlled comparison of every unit.
What “completely flat” means on the Fold7
A perfect 180° is not Samsung’s only acceptable angle
Geometrically, 180° means the two halves form one straight plane. Samsung’s Hong Kong support guidance gives a fully opened Galaxy Z Fold7 range of 178.5° to 181.5°. In other words, a small deviation from exactly 180° can be within Samsung’s stated normal range; it does not establish that an individual phone is defective.

Samsung’s Korean support guidance also explains that some hinge play can be felt when force is applied beyond 180°, due to spacing and elasticity in the hinge components. That is not a reason to push the phone past its natural stopping point. Samsung’s Korean hinge guidance describes the mechanical tolerance; it does not authorize forcing the device.
A flat hinge and a level tabletop position are different things
Samsung says the rear camera assembly can keep an opened Fold7 from lying completely level on a table. A phone may therefore rock even when its hinge is fully open. Assess the plane of the inner display from the side rather than treating table contact as a pass-or-fail measurement.

The Fold7 introduced Samsung’s Armor FlexHinge, which the company describes as using an enhanced water-drop design and a multi-rail structure. Samsung says the design helps reduce visible creasing and distribute stress more evenly, but that design description does not establish that every unit opens to precisely the same angle—or that the redesign caused the reported variation. Samsung’s product announcement describes the hinge design.
How to tell a minor deviation from a possible problem

Samsung’s angle guidance is not a warranty promise or a guarantee that every condition inside that range is harmless. Likewise, the reports do not establish a universal Fold7 failure rate. A service provider must assess a particular phone and its condition.

Check the hinge safely
- Remove the case and any accessory that might press against the hinge.
- On a clean, level surface, open the phone normally using both hands. Do not push past the natural stop.
- View the inner display from the side to see whether its two halves form a slight angle. Do not use camera-bump contact with the table as the sole test.
- Open and close it a few times without pressing aggressively. Notice whether the movement is smooth and consistent, and whether any new noise or catching occurs.
- If the V-shape is pronounced, the behavior is worsening, or there is visible damage, photograph or video it and contact Samsung support or an authorized service center.
Do not insert cards, tools, or other objects into the hinge, and do not put liquids or cleaning products into it. Forcing the hinge can turn an uncertain symptom into damage.

Open and close the phone several times in the store or soon after delivery. Check that the halves align when closed, and look for a conspicuous V-shape, uneven gaps, hinge noise, or display damage. Comparing with another Fold7 can provide context, but it is not a definitive test: Samsung allows a small range around 180°, and individual observations vary.

If the behavior looks clearly abnormal, document it promptly and contact the seller or Samsung while your applicable return or exchange period is still open. A deviation from exactly 180° by itself does not establish a defect, and a particular replacement or warranty outcome cannot be assumed in advance.
Does this mean the Fold7 has a widespread hinge defect?
No such conclusion is established by the reports described here. They show that some units were perceived as slightly short of flat while others appeared to open fully, and Samsung’s published range allows a small deviation from 180°. A pronounced or worsening V-shape and mechanical or display symptoms deserve individual attention; isolated visual impressions cannot establish a device-wide defect or show that the redesigned hinge caused one.
