“The top edge” can mean two different problems. If the screen responds everywhere but controls are hard to reach, enable Reachability. If a fixed strip near the notch ignores taps, misses swipes, or produces ghost touches, troubleshoot the display first and arrange hardware service if it remains dead.
Identify which top-edge problem you have

Fast diagnostic test
- Open the Home Screen and test icons in the affected upper area.
- Try the same region in several apps, including a text field and a scrolling page.
- Rotate the phone to landscape and test both taps and swipes again. A fixed dead region that follows the physical screen is more consistent with a touch or connection fault.
- Take a screenshot. View it on another device if the image itself has lines, discoloration, or distortion; a normal screenshot with a visibly damaged panel points toward the display hardware.
- If only one app fails, close, update, and reopen that app. Reinstall it only after confirming its data is synced or backed up.
iFixit recommends checking whether only part of the touchscreen responds and using landscape orientation to reach areas that cannot be tapped in portrait: its touchscreen troubleshooting guide.
Use Reachability when the screen works
Reachability moves the upper interface downward for one-handed use; it cannot repair a dead digitizer. On current iOS versions, look under Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Reachability. Menu wording can vary slightly by iOS release. On iPhone X, activate it by swiping down from the bottom edge near the Home indicator.
If the bottom edge also will not register, try AssistiveTouch, Voice Control, or Siri for available actions. Zoom and other display-accessibility features can change the interface but do not restore failed touch hardware.

Safe first-line fixes for an unresponsive strip
- Clean and dry the screen. Remove moisture, grease, and debris, and dry your fingers. Do not press harder on the dead area. Apple lists a clean, dry screen as a first check: Apple touch-screen troubleshooting.
- Disconnect wired accessories. Test with no Lightning cable attached. If the fault appears only while charging, try a known-good Apple-certified or reputable cable, adapter, and outlet.
- Remove the case and screen protector. A cracked protector, trapped debris, poor fit, or case lip can block edge touches and gestures.
- Force-restart the iPhone X. Quickly press and release Volume Up, quickly press and release Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears; this can take more than 10 seconds. Do not release when the power-off slider appears. See Apple’s force-restart instructions.
- Test again across apps and orientations. A restart that helps temporarily is a diagnostic clue, not proof that damaged hardware is fixed.
Apple says persistent intermittent or failed touch may require service. Do not erase the phone or perform a recovery restore as an early step.
When the display is the likely failed component
A display-level fault is more likely when the dead area is a consistent rectangle or strip, survives cleaning and restart, or appears with cracks, lines, flicker, black patches, discoloration, inaccurate touches, or ghost touches. The same conclusion is more likely after a drop, bend, liquid exposure, or recent screen replacement.

Replacement-screen quality varies. Apple warns that nongenuine displays can cause missed or misplaced touches, accidental edge touches, reduced brightness, and loss or degradation of True Tone: Apple’s display guidance. If the issue started after a repair, return to that shop or parts supplier under its warranty before paying for another repair.
Face ID and sealing risks
The iPhone X front sensor and earpiece assembly is delicate. Damaging or incorrectly transferring the original assembly can disable Face ID and affect the proximity sensor, earpiece, or microphone. Not every replacement screen destroys Face ID, but opening the phone also means you should not expect factory-level dust or splash sealing afterward.

When the fault is deeper than the screen
Escalate to a professional diagnosis when a known-good display has the same dead area, the phone was severely bent or dropped, multiple functions failed together, corrosion or liquid damage is visible, or a connector or flex cable appears damaged. iFixit lists defective displays, damaged display cables, poor replacement parts, and logic-board damage as possible causes: iFixit’s diagnosis guide.
Board-level repair requires specialist tools and microsoldering skill. Do not probe connectors, bend pins, or experiment inside the phone if you are not trained; the risks include permanent board damage, battery damage, Face ID loss, and data loss. Apple says Self Service Repair is intended for people with repair knowledge and experience, with availability varying by region and model: Apple repair options.

Back up before service
- Back up to iCloud while the phone can still be operated.
- Use a trusted, already-paired computer when possible.
- Do not erase or restore merely to test touch.
- Recovery-mode restoration can delete data; use it only after confirming that a current backup exists and data-preservation options are exhausted.
- If the phone cannot be unlocked or cannot trust a new computer, tell the technician before authorizing a restore.
Repair or replace the iPhone X?
Get a written estimate that identifies the display source, warranty, Face ID handling, and whether the provider is Apple, an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or an Independent Repair Provider. Apple’s screen-repair estimate depends on inspection, and authorized providers may set their own fees: Apple screen repair. Independent providers may use genuine parts, but Apple says their work is not covered by Apple warranty or AppleCare; the shop may provide its own warranty: Apple’s Independent Repair Provider program.
The historical iPhone X display-module replacement program has ended, so do not expect a free repair under that program: Apple’s program notice.

- Choose Reachability: every part of the screen responds and only reach distance is the issue.
- Choose software troubleshooting: the failure is sudden, intermittent, app-specific, or changes when accessories are removed.
- Choose display service: a fixed region is dead across apps, especially after impact or a screen replacement.
- Choose professional board diagnosis: a replacement display does not help, or there is bend, liquid damage, connector damage, or several failed functions.
- Consider replacing the phone: the estimate is high for a 2017 device, battery health is poor, several other components are failing, or newer software and security support matter to you.
Apple’s Parts and Service History documentation does not list the iPhone X among models with guaranteed display-history fields, so do not assume Settings will show a “Genuine Display” entry: Apple Parts and Service History.
