Samsung’s seven-year software commitment applies to eligible Galaxy devices, not every Samsung phone. It means seven generations of operating-system upgrades plus seven years of security-update support. Samsung introduced the policy with the Galaxy S24 series in January 2024 and continued it for later qualifying flagships; the exact model, region and carrier determine what updates arrive and when.
What Samsung’s seven-year promise means
Samsung describes the commitment in two parts: seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates. The first is a count of major operating-system generations, not a guarantee that an update arrives once in each calendar year. The second is a time-based security-support period. Samsung’s announcements use “generations of OS upgrades,” so it is more precise to use that wording than to promise seven Android updates in every case.
Security updates can address vulnerabilities in Android, Samsung software and, in some cases, chipset components. Samsung’s security program explains how its patches draw on fixes from Google and Samsung: Samsung Mobile Security. The seven-year period does not mean a monthly patch is guaranteed throughout: supported models can have monthly or quarterly schedules, and delivery can be delayed.
Which Galaxy phones are covered?
Galaxy S24, S25 and S26 flagships
The Galaxy S24, S24+ and S24 Ultra started the policy. Samsung announced seven OS-upgrade generations and seven years of security updates for the series in January 2024: Samsung’s Galaxy S24 announcement. Samsung repeated the commitment for the Galaxy S25 series in January 2025: Samsung’s Galaxy S25 announcement. Samsung’s current policy document also lists the Galaxy S26 series with security support through February 2033.

FE models and other Galaxy devices
Do not assume a similarly named model inherits the same terms. Samsung’s policy document lists the S24 FE and S25 FE separately from the S24 and S25 flagships. Other Galaxy families—including Z Fold, Z Flip, A-series, tablets and XCover devices—have model-specific support policies; a seven-year commitment for selected devices is not a portfolio-wide promise. Check the exact model in Samsung’s policy documentation and security-update listings before buying.
When does support end?
Samsung’s enterprise-edition policy PDF gives the following model-specific schedule. It is a regional enterprise document, so consumer, carrier and regional listings may differ; Samsung says availability and timing can vary by model, market and network provider. Its listed final OS version should be read as the value in that document, not used to infer a universal version for every regional edition.

These dates come from Samsung’s enterprise-edition software policy PDF. Use the original launch/support period, not your purchase date: buying a used S24 in 2028 does not restart its support clock.
Support duration is not update frequency
Samsung’s security page separates eligible models into update schedules, including monthly and quarterly groups. The S24, S25 and S26 families appear in the monthly group in the current listing, while older models can move to quarterly support. The lists can change as devices approach the end of regular support.

- Support duration is how long a model is eligible for updates under its policy.
- Cadence is how often patches are normally scheduled; it need not remain monthly for the full support period.
- Delivery timing depends on rollout, region and carrier. Some carrier devices may follow a different schedule.
- Patch content can vary; Samsung notes that some chipset fixes may arrive in a later security package, and major OS upgrades can delay planned security patches.
Samsung’s update process includes firmware development, quality assurance and carrier testing, which helps explain why availability may not be simultaneous across devices and networks. See its description of the software update lifecycle.
How to check a Galaxy phone for updates
- Open Settings.
- Tap Software update or System updates, depending on the device.
- Tap Download and install.
- Tap Check for system updates or Check for software updates, depending on the carrier.
- If an update is offered, tap Download now if prompted and follow the on-screen instructions.
To see the installed software version, go to Settings → About phone → Software information. Samsung’s support instructions note that menu labels can vary. If no update appears, check your connection and battery, restart and try again, then consult your carrier’s rollout status or Samsung Members. A delay alone does not establish that the phone has lost support; avoid installing firmware for another model or region unless you understand the compatibility, warranty and data-loss risks.

What the promise does not guarantee
- Monthly patches, same-day global releases or identical rollout dates across carriers.
- Every new One UI, Galaxy AI, camera or other hardware-dependent feature on every eligible phone. Samsung says functions can vary by device, carrier and network.
- Seven years of battery health, repair-part availability, warranty coverage or carrier compatibility.
- That performance, storage capacity or repair economics will remain satisfactory for the entire software-support period.
Software support is only one part of a phone’s useful life. Before choosing a device to keep for years, consider its storage, performance, battery condition and replacement cost, repair options, and compatibility with your carrier. A used phone’s low price may be less attractive if it has little support time remaining or needs an expensive repair.
Is a seven-year Galaxy worth buying?
Longer support can make an eligible Galaxy easier to keep securely and may help with resale or fleet planning, but those are potential benefits, not guaranteed financial outcomes. Compare the price with the years of support remaining, not simply the headline seven-year period. For a used or discounted phone, verify the exact model and its original launch date; for a new one, weigh the extra support time against the price difference between generations. Samsung’s Galaxy product destination can help identify the model, but confirm its detailed policy for your market and carrier.
