How to Connect Last.fm to Spotify and Track Listening Statistics

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Last.fm can connect directly to Spotify and record eligible listening as scrobbles. Those scrobbles power Last.fm’s long-term history, artist, album and track charts, weekly and yearly reports, and recommendations. The normal connection starts recording new listening after authorization; it does not automatically import your old Spotify history.

What you need before connecting

  • A Last.fm account (free is sufficient for basic scrobbling).
  • A Spotify account and access to the correct login.
  • A browser that can complete the authorization screens.
  • A decision about any existing scrobbler. Running two Spotify scrobblers at once can create duplicate entries.

How to connect Spotify to Last.fm

Start in Last.fm, not Spotify’s ordinary settings. The current connected-applications page is https://www.last.fm/settings/applications. Labels can move slightly after a redesign or vary by account and device.

  1. Sign in to Last.fm or create an account.
  2. Open your profile menu, then choose Settings.
  3. Open Applications (or connected applications).
  4. Find Spotify Scrobbling and select Connect.
  5. Sign in to Spotify if prompted.
  6. Review and approve the authorization request.
  7. Return to Last.fm and confirm that Spotify is listed as connected.
  8. Play a test track and leave it running long enough to qualify as a scrobble.

Spotify’s community instructions also describe choosing Connect beside Spotify Scrobbling: Spotify Community FAQ.

Which Spotify listening is covered?

Last.fm currently describes Spotify scrobbling for the desktop and mobile apps, web player and Spotify-connected devices: Last.fm Track My Music. “Supported” is not a guarantee that every play appears instantly. Offline playback, authorization problems, service delays, metadata differences and competing scrobblers can still affect results. Test the devices you actually use, such as a phone, computer, browser, smart speaker or console.

How to verify that scrobbling works

  1. Play a full-length track rather than a short preview.
  2. Let it run past the normal eligibility point before stopping it.
  3. Open your Last.fm profile or Library and inspect recent scrobbles.
  4. Check that artist, album and track names are correct.
  5. Repeat on another device if cross-device tracking matters.

Now playing is a temporary status while a track is in progress. A scrobble is the completed record saved to your history. Charts and reports are calculated from accumulated scrobbles, so a now-playing indicator alone does not prove that the play has been permanently recorded. A short delay is normal; refresh after several minutes before diagnosing a failure.

What a Last.fm scrobble records

Last.fm uses scrobbles to build listening history, charts, reports and recommendations. A record can include the artist, track, album, play time or timestamp, and source or client information where available. Its privacy policy explains that a connected music service may provide metadata such as title, artist, album and duration: Last.fm privacy policy.

For conventional Last.fm API clients, the standard rule is that a track must be longer than 30 seconds and must play for at least half its duration or four minutes, whichever comes first. This is a general API rule, not an absolute promise about every detail of the Spotify integration: Last.fm scrobbling API.

Where to find your listening statistics

  • Profile: recent activity and account summaries.
  • Library: saved scrobbles plus artist, album and track charts.
  • Reports: period-based summaries such as weekly and yearly reports, where available.
  • History controls: browse listening by date or time period when the relevant view is offered.
  • Recommendations: suggestions generated from your recorded listening.

Last.fm describes these history, chart, report and recommendation features at https://www.last.fm/about. Availability of deeper reports and controls depends on the account feature set.

Spotify activity is not the same as Last.fm history

Feature Spotify Last.fm
Main purpose Streaming and in-app social activity Long-term scrobble history and music statistics
Charts Spotify’s own activity and summaries Artist, album, track, weekly, yearly and all-time scrobble views
Cross-service history Spotify-centered Can combine supported scrobbling sources
Editing Limited history controls Last.fm Pro adds scrobble editing
Old Spotify history Controlled by Spotify data tools Not automatically backfilled by the normal connection

Spotify’s Private Session and listening-activity settings control visibility and social sharing; they are not, by themselves, proof that Last.fm scrobbling is disabled. See Spotify’s current controls at Spotify privacy and social controls.

Does Last.fm import old Spotify listening?

No—not through the ordinary Spotify connection. It records future eligible listening after authorization. Last.fm says its reports are based on music scrobbled to the profile and that pre-existing provider statistics cannot be imported into its historical reports: Last.fm Pro benefits.

Spotify data exports and other analytics services are separate workflows. An imported file in another service does not backfill Last.fm’s official scrobble history.

Fix missing Spotify scrobbles

  1. Check the account link. Return to Last.fm Applications settings and verify that Spotify is connected. If it looks stale, disconnect and reconnect, authorizing the intended Spotify account—especially if you have multiple accounts.
  2. Wait and refresh. Allow several minutes, refresh Last.fm and test a new track.
  3. Meet the play threshold. Skips, previews and very short plays may not qualify under the standard API rule.
  4. Disable competing scrobblers. Check Last.fm’s own device tools, Pano Scrobbler, Web Scrobbler and other tracking apps. Keep one Spotify submission path while testing.
  5. Test the actual device. Compare the mobile app, desktop app, web player and a Spotify Connect device rather than assuming they behave identically.
  6. Inspect metadata. Remixes, featured-artist credits and alternate album names can create an entry that looks missing even though it was recorded under different metadata.
  7. Escalate persistent failures. If a clean reconnect and single-device test still fail, consult Last.fm support and include the device, player, account connection state and test time.

Some users report needing to reconnect Spotify periodically, but no universal reconnection interval is established by the official documentation. Treat that as a possible failure mode, not a rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix duplicate scrobbles

Use one Spotify scrobbling method at a time. Direct Last.fm integration plus a device-level app can submit the same play twice.

  1. List every app, browser extension and Last.fm connection that can submit Spotify plays.
  2. Keep either the direct Last.fm Spotify connection or a third-party scrobbler.
  3. Disable the alternatives and play one test track.
  4. Remove duplicate records manually if your account supports editing.

Last.fm Pro includes scrobble editing and automatic track or album edits: Pro features.

How accurate are the statistics?

Last.fm is a scrobble-based record, not a copy of Spotify’s internal play-count database. Accuracy depends on successful submission, correct metadata, sufficient play time, no outage or authorization gap, and no duplicate submissions. If a source was never connected, its listening cannot appear retroactively in Last.fm charts.

Free Last.fm versus Last.fm Pro

Free Last.fm is enough for connecting Spotify, recording scrobbles and using core history and charts. Pro is mainly for cleanup and deeper analysis.

Frequently asked questions

Can I connect Spotify from the Spotify app?

Normally no. Begin in Last.fm’s Settings → Applications area and choose Connect beside Spotify Scrobbling.

Does Spotify Premium determine whether scrobbling works?

The supplied product documentation does not establish a Premium-only requirement. Follow the authorization flow for the Spotify account you use and verify it with a test track.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I recover a missed play?

Do not assume it can be recovered automatically. You may be able to add or edit a scrobble, analyze a Spotify data export elsewhere, or use a service such as stats.fm that supports an Extended streaming history import. These options do not make the play identical to an ordinary Last.fm scrobble.

Can I disconnect Spotify later?

Yes. Return to Last.fm’s connected-applications settings and remove or disconnect Spotify. Future Spotify plays will stop being submitted through that authorization.

Is Last.fm Pro required to connect Spotify?

No. Basic connection and scrobbling are available without Pro; the subscription is for editing, additional reports and other advanced controls.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does a song show as now playing but not in my history?

Now playing is a temporary status. Leave the track running long enough to meet the normal eligibility rule, then refresh your Last.fm profile or Library.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will Spotify Connect speakers and consoles always scrobble?

Last.fm lists Spotify-connected devices as supported, but delays, authorization issues and device-specific behavior can occur. Test the hardware you use.

The Bottom Line

Connect Spotify from Last.fm’s Applications settings, verify one completed test scrobble, and keep only one Spotify scrobbling path active. Last.fm is excellent for ongoing, cross-device history, but it will not recreate old Spotify listening automatically.
