Google’s “Our favorite Chrome extensions of 2024,” published December 10, 2024 by Chrome Web Store Merchandising Manager Jamie Anderson, is an editorial selection—not a ranked or independently tested list. It names 12 extensions across productivity, entertainment, shopping, and customization. The original roundup remains useful as a snapshot, but availability, permissions, maintenance, and pricing must be checked on each current listing before installation.
Google did not publish scores, a selection formula, performance tests, or a privacy audit. The recommendations below therefore focus on fit, trade-offs, and the checks that matter to Chrome users in 2026.

Google’s original selection is documented at its December 10, 2024 roundup. The old 2024 collection link currently redirects to an unsupported page, so it should not be treated as a current directory.
Productivity and focus
Todoist for Chrome
Todoist lets you turn a webpage or selected text into a task and manage tasks without leaving the tab. It is the most natural choice for people already using Todoist across devices; someone who does not want that service may get similar capture from an existing task manager, bookmark system, or read-later tool.

The current listing observed in August 2026 showed version 12.21.9, updated July 31, 2026, with 500,000 users and a 4.7 rating from 51.3K ratings. Those figures change and are not a quality guarantee. The listing discloses personally identifiable information and website content: Chrome Web Store listing. Confirm the publisher, permissions, and account requirements before installing.
Evernote Web Clipper
Web Clipper saves articles and pages to Evernote for later reference. Its main advantage is a direct fit with an Evernote research library; it is a weaker reason to start a new service if you already have a notes app with a reliable clipper. Verify that the current extension is maintained, that your required account tier supports clipping, and that the vendor’s privacy policy matches the material you plan to save. Bardeen AI
Bardeen connects web apps, extracts data, and automates browser workflows. It can suit sales, recruiting, research, and operations teams, but automation errors can send information to the wrong place, scrape incorrect fields, or fail when a site changes.
The August 2026 listing showed version 5.0.0, updated June 19, 2026, 200,000 users, a 4.4 rating from 451 ratings, and in-app purchases. Its disclosure includes personally identifiable information, location, web history, and user activity: Chrome listing. Test on sample data, use least-privilege accounts, and require confirmation before sending, deleting, or changing external data. Pricing should be checked at Bardeen’s pricing page.

Momentum replaces Chrome’s new-tab page with a dashboard containing focus prompts, tasks, shortcuts, weather, and personalization. It is a good fit if the default new tab encourages distraction. It may be inconvenient for users who depend on Chrome’s standard shortcuts or an organization-controlled new-tab policy.
The listing observed in August 2026 showed version 2.27.4, updated August 17, 2026, 2,000,000 users, and a 4.5 rating from 13.7K ratings. It distinguishes free and Plus features, offers in-app purchases, and discloses personally identifiable and authentication information: Momentum listing.
Text Blaze
Text Blaze inserts reusable snippets through shortcuts, reducing repetitive typing in email, support, sales, and administration. Its value rises with the number of accurate templates you maintain. Add review steps for names, prices, dates, and legal wording: a snippet that fires in the wrong field can create a costly mistake. Compare it with your operating system’s text replacement and snippets built into your email or help-desk software. Vendor site: Text Blaze.
Immersive Translate
Immersive Translate presents translated webpages, PDFs, e-books, images, videos, subtitles, and meetings. It is particularly useful for language learning and international research, while built-in Chrome translation or an established translation service may be enough for occasional pages.

The August 2026 listing showed version 1.32.5, updated August 17, 2026, 3,000,000 users, and a 3.9 rating from 2.8K ratings: Chrome listing. Translation can mishandle legal, medical, financial, and technical terminology, names, sarcasm, tables, scanned PDFs, image text, and fast subtitles. Entertainment tools
Volume Master
Volume Master provides per-tab volume control and Google’s roundup repeats the product’s “up to 600%” amplification claim. That is not an independent loudness measurement and does not mean 600% louder or better audio. Digital gain can clip and distort sound; protect your hearing and speakers. Check the current permissions and site behavior at the listing.
Turn Off the Lights
Turn Off the Lights dims the page around a video so the player stands out. It is useful when a site’s native theater mode is insufficient, but page changes can conflict with ads, controls, accessibility settings, or site redesigns. Review its current listing before granting broad site access.

CouponBirds
CouponBirds searches and tests codes during checkout. Google’s article attributes an average saving of $150 per year to CouponBirds; treat that as a promotional claim, not a typical or guaranteed result. Codes may be expired, limited to new customers, non-stackable, or inferior to another sale. Keepa adds Amazon price-history charts and price-drop alerts. It is the specialist choice for Amazon shoppers who want context before buying, not a universal tracker for every retailer. Customization and fun
Stylish
Stylish applies custom skins and styles to websites, making it useful for themes, dark presentations, and visual preferences. User-created styles can become obsolete after a redesign, lower contrast, hide controls, or conflict with accessibility settings. Compare it with a site’s own dark mode, Chrome themes, and accessibility tools. Listing: Stylish.
Ice Dodo
Ice Dodo is a fast-paced 3D platform game. Google included it as a “fun” pick, not an essential browser utility. It may use more CPU or GPU than a normal extension and may be unsuitable on managed or low-powered devices. Listing: Ice Dodo.
Which picks fit which job?
- Task capture: Todoist, if you already use Todoist.
- Focused new tab: Momentum.
- Browser automation: Bardeen, with sample-data testing and strict account permissions.
- Multilingual reading: Immersive Translate.
- Amazon price history: Keepa.
- Video ambience: Turn Off the Lights.
- Tab volume convenience: Volume Master, conservatively.
- Visual customization: Stylish.
These are use-case judgments based on the functions Google described, not independent test rankings. Service-linked tools such as Todoist, Evernote, Momentum, Bardeen, and Keepa are most valuable when you are willing to use their wider platforms; current pricing and regional availability should be checked directly with each vendor.

- Open the extension’s official Chrome Web Store listing.
- Confirm the publisher name and linked website.
- Read requested permissions and the data-disclosure section.
- Check the latest update date and recent reviews; ratings change daily.
- Install only from the official store or the vendor’s official page.
- Test on a low-risk account or sample page before using sensitive data.
- Disable or remove extensions you no longer need.
- Recheck permissions after major updates and when an extension changes behavior.
Broad access to all websites deserves particular scrutiny for automation, translation, styling, coupon, and media tools. Chrome desktop support does not automatically mean the extension works on mobile Chrome, in Incognito, on ChromeOS, or on a managed school or work device.
Bottom line
Google’s December 2024 list is a useful historical snapshot of Chrome Web Store trends: task capture, AI-assisted automation, translation, shopping analysis, and personalization. It is not proof that all 12 are still maintained, available in every country, private, or best for every reader in 2026. Choose the extension that solves a defined recurring problem, verify its current listing and permissions, and remove it when the benefit no longer justifies another publisher and access path in your browser.
