You can record eligible Phone and FaceTime audio calls with Apple’s built-in Call Recording feature on supported iPhones and in supported regions. Start it from the call screen; the recording is saved in Notes, where a transcript may also be available. Recording and transcription have separate software, device, language, and regional requirements.
Privacy first: Tell the other participant and obtain consent where required by law or policy. Apple’s built-in control plays an announcement to both participants when recording starts, and Apple says the announcement may repeat during the call. An announcement does not by itself make a recording lawful everywhere.
Check whether your iPhone can record and transcribe the call
Apple introduced built-in call recording with iOS 18. It is documented for eligible Phone calls and FaceTime audio calls, but it is not a universal recorder for calls in apps such as WhatsApp, Signal, Zoom, or Teams. Apple’s call-transcription instructions specify iOS 18.1 or later; having the recording control does not guarantee that a transcript will be produced.

Apple’s user guide names Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Egypt, the European Union, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen among regions where call recording is unavailable. Treat that as a dated list, not a permanent one; check Apple’s live availability information for your location.

Record a Phone call
- Open the Phone app and make or answer an eligible call.
- During the call, tap More, then tap Call Recording.
- Wait for the recording announcement. Apple’s built-in feature announces the recording to both participants.
- To stop, tap the stop-recording control or end the call. If offered, tap View Saved Call; otherwise open Notes.
Apple describes the same built-in feature for FaceTime audio calls. Start or answer the audio call and look for the recording control in the call’s More or audio-tools menu. The exact controls may vary by software version and call state; if no recording option appears, use the troubleshooting checks below.
Find the recording and use its transcript
Open Notes → Call Recordings and select the saved call. The note contains the audio recording and, when transcription is supported and completed, a transcript. If Notes says transcription is in progress, give it time and reopen the recording.

Use the transcript or recording controls in the note to:
- Play the audio and review the transcript alongside it. Tapping transcript text can jump to the corresponding part of the recording.
- Search for words or phrases, copy transcript text, or add the transcript to the note.
- Save or share the audio using the note’s More menu.
- Delete the recording. Deleting the audio also deletes its associated transcript.
Apple says speaker identification may appear in transcripts, but labels should be treated as helpful cues rather than infallible identification. Apple’s documentation establishes that the recording is saved in Notes; whether it syncs to other devices depends on your Notes and iCloud setup. Check Apple’s current iCloud documentation before making assumptions about synchronization, retention, or cloud storage.

Summarize a call with Apple Intelligence
Call recording and transcription do not require Apple Intelligence. Where Apple Intelligence is supported and enabled, open the recording in Notes, tap the recording, then choose Summary or the available transcript-and-summary control. Review the generated result, then use the More menu to copy or share it. Summaries can vary and may contain errors, so verify important details against the audio.
If Call Recording is missing
- Check your region. Consult Apple’s current feature-availability page. The feature is not offered everywhere.
- Check the call type. Apple documents Phone and FaceTime audio calls, not every third-party calling app. Its guide describes a call with one other person; do not assume conference-call support.
- Check Settings. Go to Settings → Apps → Phone → Call Recording and make sure the control is on. It is enabled by default where available, but calls are not automatically recorded.
- Update iOS. Apple introduced call recording in iOS 18. Transcription requires iOS 18.1 or later according to Apple’s Notes documentation.
- Check device and language eligibility. Recording and transcription do not have identical requirements. Apple says a missing transcript control can mean the device does not meet minimum requirements or Notes has not detected a supported spoken language.
If a recording exists but there is no transcript
- Wait and reopen the saved call if transcription is still processing.
- Check that the spoken language is supported and that Notes can detect it. A recording can be saved even when transcription is unavailable.
- Check the iPhone and iOS requirements for Notes transcription; Apple lists iPhone 12 and later for supported-language audio transcription and specifies iOS 18.1 or later for call transcription.
- Review the audio directly if the transcript is absent or seems incomplete. Recording availability does not promise an instant or complete transcript.
Verify important details and protect sensitive audio
Apple advises users to verify transcription accuracy before relying on it. Listen to the original audio while checking names, numbers, dates, addresses, technical terms, and legal, medical, or financial statements. Do not treat the transcript or a generated summary as an authoritative record. Preserve the audio when the conversation matters.

Recording laws vary by jurisdiction; some places require consent from every participant. Workplace, professional, and confidentiality rules may impose additional limits. Apple says the person being recorded cannot prevent the other caller from turning on Call Recording, but can stop the recording by ending the call. That describes the feature’s behavior, not a determination of anyone’s legal rights. Apple also cautions that third-party recording apps may behave differently.

To disable the feature, open Settings → Apps → Phone → Call Recording and turn it off. This disables the recording control; it does not delete recordings already saved in Notes.

Alternatives when Apple’s feature does not fit

Before choosing an app, verify its current App Store availability, pricing, carrier requirements, storage practices, and recording notice. Do not assume a third-party service has Apple’s announcement or privacy behavior. Voicemail transcription is a separate feature, and Hold Assist’s temporary hold-related transcription is not a call recording; Apple says that temporary transcription is discarded when the call connects.
