Neither feature gives Gemini unrestricted access to your WhatsApp chats: it cannot browse or summarize your chat history directly.
What the WhatsApp integration actually does
Google documents two distinct ways Gemini can interact with WhatsApp. The WhatsApp Connected App handles calls and messages; notification reading and replies use Android’s Utilities capability. They are separate controls, so connecting one does not necessarily enable the other. Google’s Gemini Help page explains both pathways.
| Task | Supported? | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Draft or refine WhatsApp text | Yes | Ask Gemini to help compose it, then use the WhatsApp Connected App to send it. |
| Send a WhatsApp text message | Yes | WhatsApp Connected App in the Gemini mobile app on Android. |
| Make a WhatsApp call | Yes | WhatsApp Connected App in the Gemini mobile app on Android. |
| Read text from a WhatsApp notification | Yes, when Android exposes the text | Utilities accesses notification content; this is not access to the WhatsApp conversation. |
| Reply to a WhatsApp notification | Yes, where notification access and the available action allow it | Utilities, using the notification content available to Android. |
| Browse WhatsApp chat history or summarize a conversation inside WhatsApp | No | Not supported by the documented integration. |
| Send or read WhatsApp photos, GIFs, memes, audio, or video | No, through the documented WhatsApp integration | Use WhatsApp directly for media. |
Google says the WhatsApp integration works in the Gemini mobile app on Android, not in Gemini on the web or Gemini in Google Messages. The documented WhatsApp functionality is also unavailable in Gemini Live chats.
Requirements and availability
You need an Android phone or tablet with WhatsApp Messenger and the Gemini mobile app installed. Gemini must be available and functioning as your mobile assistant. Contact-based requests also depend on Gemini being able to identify the person, which can require saved or synchronized contacts and the relevant Google app permission.

Availability can vary with device, account, app version, language, region, permissions, and rollout. Google’s announcement of Gemini Intelligence describes a staged rollout beginning with newer Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices; it does not establish that every Android phone has the same notification or task-automation features. See Google’s Android announcement for that broader rollout.
Connect WhatsApp to Gemini
- Open the Gemini app on your Android device.
- Ask Gemini to message or call a contact through WhatsApp. For example: Send a WhatsApp message to [contact].
- If WhatsApp is not connected, Gemini should offer an option to connect it. Follow the on-screen instructions.
- To specify the app, include
@WhatsAppin your request, such as @WhatsApp send [message] to [contact] or @WhatsApp call [contact].
You can also ask Gemini to help write a message first: Help me write a congratulations message to [contact], then send it on WhatsApp. Check the recipient and wording before sending, particularly if the request depends on a notification or a group conversation for context.
Google identifies Connected Apps as the relevant settings area, but does not provide one menu path that applies to every Android device and Gemini version. If labels or placement differ, use the on-screen connection prompt or look in Gemini’s Connected Apps settings.

How reading WhatsApp notifications works
Notification access is not part of the WhatsApp Connected App. For Gemini to read or reply to a WhatsApp notification, WhatsApp must generate a notification with usable message text, and Gemini’s Utilities capability must have the relevant notification access. Gemini can work only with the content Android makes available; it does not thereby gain access to the full WhatsApp thread.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That distinction matters in everyday use. If previews are hidden, a notification has been dismissed, or Android groups several alerts into a summary, Gemini may have little text, only partial text, or ambiguous context. Lock-screen privacy settings and other notification controls can also limit what is exposed. These are practical consequences of notification-based access, not a guarantee that every notification setup will behave identically.
When notification access is available, try a specific request such as:

- What does my latest WhatsApp notification say?
- Read my latest WhatsApp notification.
- Draft a polite reply to the WhatsApp message from [contact].
- Reply to the latest WhatsApp message: “I’ll get back to you this afternoon.”
For a reply, make clear whether you want a draft or want Gemini to send it. Review the sender, thread, and final wording before permitting a message to go out.
What Gemini cannot access or do through this integration
- It cannot browse your WhatsApp chat history or directly summarize an entire conversation in WhatsApp.
- It cannot read message content that is not exposed through an Android notification.
- The WhatsApp Connected App does not handle sending or reading photos, GIFs, memes, audio, or video.
- WhatsApp calling and messaging through this integration are not supported in Gemini on the web, Gemini in Google Messages, or the documented Gemini Live chat experience.
For a long exchange, a message whose preview is hidden or truncated, or any media, open WhatsApp and use the conversation itself as the source of truth.
Fix common problems
Gemini cannot find a contact
- Confirm the person is saved with the correct phone number and that WhatsApp is installed.
- Check contact synchronization or the setting for saving contact information from signed-in devices.
- Check whether the Google app has Contacts permission: touch and hold the Google app, tap App info, then Permissions.
- Name WhatsApp explicitly in your request or use
@WhatsApp.
Google’s documented path for contact information in Gemini is: open Gemini, tap Menu, tap your profile picture or account initial, open Settings, select Contact info from your devices, then enable saving contact information from signed-in devices. Labels can vary by version.

Gemini will not send a WhatsApp message
- Check that WhatsApp Messenger is installed and signed in, and that WhatsApp is connected in Gemini’s Connected Apps settings.
- Make sure Gemini is functioning as the active mobile assistant and that the intended contact is identifiable.
- Ask for a text message rather than a media action; the documented integration does not support WhatsApp media.
Gemini cannot read a WhatsApp notification
- Check that WhatsApp notifications are enabled and that previews expose message text rather than only an alert or message count.
- Check whether the notification was dismissed, grouped, or hidden by privacy settings.
- Confirm that Utilities has the necessary notification access. Its settings location and labels may differ across devices and software versions.
- If the notification is still unavailable, open WhatsApp to read the message; notification access cannot supply content Android has not exposed.
Gemini identifies the wrong message or conversation
Grouped alerts, truncated previews, multiple senders in a group, or a newer notification replacing an older one can make notification context unclear. Stop before sending, open WhatsApp, identify the correct conversation, and reply there.

Connecting WhatsApp for calls and messages is different from allowing Utilities to access notifications. Google notes that disconnecting WhatsApp does not necessarily remove every other route Gemini may have to related information: the Google app may still have Contacts permission, and Utilities may remain connected for notification access. Review those controls separately if you want to limit access.
Google says WhatsApp data used to fulfill a Gemini request is subject to WhatsApp’s Privacy Policy. Before enabling notification access, consider whether you want Gemini to be able to use text Android displays from messaging notifications, including potentially sensitive content. For broader context on controls and safeguards in Gemini Intelligence, Google has also published an Android security and privacy announcement; that announcement concerns the broader rollout and should not be read as a claim that every WhatsApp notification action is processed identically.

Is the WhatsApp capability new?
Google’s release notes document Phone, Messages, and WhatsApp extensions as available from March 3, 2025, including calling and drafting, refining, and sending messages. The WhatsApp calling-and-messaging integration therefore predates the broader Gemini Intelligence announcement of May 12, 2026. That later announcement describes staged Android task automation across selected apps; it is better understood as broader platform context than proof of universal WhatsApp notification access. See Gemini release notes and Google’s Android announcement.
For short, hands-free text interactions, Gemini can save a trip through the app. When the reply depends on full chat context, a precise sender or group thread, or multimedia, open WhatsApp and handle it there.
