It is not a universal hands-free mode: availability varies, and some requests still require you to unlock the device.
What Gemini can do from the lock screen
With the relevant settings enabled, you can ask Gemini to call a saved contact, dial a number, call a business, or send a text. Google also documents reading and replying to some messages from notifications; that does not mean Gemini can freely browse your entire message history while the phone is locked.
Gemini can be invoked by touch or with “Hey Google” if voice activation is set up. General questions and selected actions—such as setting a timer or alarm, controlling media, or changing the flashlight or volume—may also be available. Lock-screen access is limited: requests involving personal information, such as calendar details, can still require an unlock. Google’s lock-screen feature documentation describes the supported actions and exceptions.
Who can use it—and where it does not work
This feature is for the Gemini mobile app on Android phones and tablets. Google’s current help pages document it as an available Android capability, but do not guarantee the same availability across every device, region, account, language, carrier, or software build. The phone or tablet must also be configured to use Gemini as its assistant or otherwise make it available from the lock screen.

- Phone-app calling is not available in Gemini Live chats, the Gemini web app, or Gemini inside Google Messages.
- Google says Pixel Tablet users must unlock the tablet to use Gemini on its lock screen.
- Some supervised or age-restricted accounts may not support all lock-screen features.
- The Phone app integration cannot currently accept or reject incoming calls.
- Google advises using the device’s calling app directly for emergency services, not Gemini’s Phone integration.

Turn on calls and messages without unlocking
There are two settings to enable: general Gemini access from the lock screen, then permission for outgoing calls and messages. Enabling only the first may allow questions or limited assistant actions without permitting calls and texts.

- Open the Gemini app.
- Tap the Menu button, then your profile picture or account initial.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Gemini on lock screen.
- Turn on Use Gemini without unlocking.
- Turn on Allow calls and messages without unlocking. Depending on the app version or device, the label may instead read Make calls and send messages without unlocking.
If the setting is missing, check that Gemini and the Google app are up to date and that Gemini is configured as your mobile assistant. Menu labels and availability can differ by device, account, region, and software version; account supervision may also limit features. The initial toggle rollout was reported in Google app beta version 15.48 in December 2024, but that historical report is not a requirement to install a beta today. Check calling, messaging, and contact access
For calls, Google lists an Android device, an active mobile phone plan, the Gemini mobile app, contact information available on the device or in the signed-in Google Account, and Phone permission for the Google app. Access to contacts and call logs may also help contact matching. Android’s permission screens and menu names vary by manufacturer and version.

- In the Gemini app, review connected apps or extensions and make sure the relevant calling or messaging app is available.
- In Android settings, check the Google app’s Phone permission; allow Contacts and call-log access where offered and needed.
- Check Settings → Apps → Default apps → Phone app and select the calling app you intend Gemini to use.
- If Gemini cannot identify someone, verify that the person’s details are saved or synchronized with the signed-in account.
If Gemini does not choose the Phone app automatically, include @Phone in the request. If the app is not connected, Gemini may offer to connect it. For business searches, calls can depend on other Google services such as Maps. Requests involving other apps or services may not work when Gemini Apps Activity or related access is disabled; Google says calls themselves may still work with Keep Activity off.

A business request such as “Call the closest Thai restaurant” may rely on location or Maps-related services. Naming the business and location directly can make the request clearer, but a search-dependent action may still fail if the required service access is unavailable.

Lock-screen permission authorizes selected actions, not unrestricted access to the phone. Gemini can pause for authentication when a request involves protected personal information, an unsupported action, another app, or an interaction the device treats as sensitive. Voice activation is also not a guarantee that every action will finish without visual confirmation.

- It says unlocking is required: Confirm both lock-screen settings are enabled, the needed app is connected, and the Google app has Phone permission. Then check the default Phone app and contact access. If the request concerns personal information or another app, an unlock may be expected.
- It selects the wrong person: Say the person’s full name and number type, for example, “Call Jane Smith’s mobile number.” Confirm the contact details before relying on a relationship name such as “my sister”; Google says relationships can be saved in Gemini instructions.
- It uses the wrong calling app: Try
@Phoneand verify Android’s default Phone app setting. - A nearby-business call fails: The request may depend on Maps or another Google service. Try naming the business and its location, or unlock the phone and search manually.
Convenience versus lock-screen access
Enabling the setting allows outgoing calls and messages without the usual unlock step. That is useful when your hands are occupied, but it also means someone with access to the lock screen—or someone whose voice request is accepted—may be able to initiate communications. Do not treat Voice Match as a guarantee that every call or message is authenticated.
Leave the feature off if you share access to your phone, have had accidental assistant activations, handle sensitive communications, or want every outgoing call and message to require authentication. For driving, use a hands-free setup such as Android Auto or a connected headset where appropriate, but follow that device’s own security and account requirements. Unlock and use the Phone or Messages app when a request is sensitive or ambiguous.
For routine hands-free communication, the feature can be useful once both settings and app permissions are in place. Its lock-screen access is deliberately narrower than full phone access, and emergency calls should be made through the device’s calling app.
