Intel’s Process Naming Since Alder Lake: Intel 7, Intel 4, 18A and More

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Alder Lake’s Intel 7 process was not a literal 7 nm node: it was the renamed 10nm Enhanced SuperFin process. Intel’s later labels—Intel 4, Intel 3 and Intel 18A—name successive process generations, not a standardized measurement that can be directly compared with another foundry’s node number. Intel 20A was an important planned transition, but Intel later canceled its productization and prioritized Intel 18A.

How Intel’s process names translate

Intel’s naming reset, announced on July 26, 2021, replaced several familiar nanometer labels with generation names. The essential translations are:

Current or roadmap name Earlier name or identity What the name refers to
10nm SuperFin 10nm SuperFin The process used by Tiger Lake-era products; it did not get renamed Intel 7.
Intel 7 10nm Enhanced SuperFin The optimized process used by Alder Lake and subsequent products.
Intel 4 Intel 7nm Intel’s next process generation, designed to fully embrace EUV lithography.
Intel 3 Intel 5nm in earlier roadmap terminology An enhanced, denser derivative of Intel 4.
Intel 20A Planned next-generation process An announced roadmap node associated with RibbonFET and PowerVia; Intel later canceled its productization.
Intel 18A Successor prioritized after 20A The process Intel advanced for client products and foundry development.

Intel’s process naming explanation and its 2021 roadmap fact sheet document the former names. The table is a naming translation, not a claim that each generation is a simple shrink of one physical dimension.

Why Intel changed its node labels

Historically, process-node numbers were associated with a physical dimension of transistor construction. Over time, no single dimension came to describe an entire manufacturing process consistently. A process generation instead combines choices about transistor design, gate and metal pitch, standard-cell libraries, SRAM, interconnects, power delivery, lithography, design rules and manufacturing targets.

Intel said its revised names would better reflect the balance of performance, power efficiency and area across the industry. The reset also replaced a delayed roadmap label: Intel’s previously announced 7nm process became Intel 4, while 10nm Enhanced SuperFin became Intel 7. The new names made Intel’s roadmap easier to position alongside competitors’ offerings, but that commercial context does not make similarly numbered processes identical.

Intel 7, TSMC N7 and Samsung 7LPP are distinct process technologies. Their labels can suggest a broad industry generation, but they do not establish equal transistor structures, density, design rules or performance.

What Alder Lake’s Intel 7 name means

The key correction is that 10nm SuperFin and 10nm Enhanced SuperFin were not both renamed Intel 7. Tiger Lake used 10nm SuperFin; Intel 7 was the new name for the enhanced generation that followed. Intel announced roughly 10%–15% higher performance per watt for Intel 7 versus Intel 10nm SuperFin, attributing the gain to FinFET optimizations. That is Intel’s stated process comparison, not a guarantee that every Intel 7 processor is 10%–15% faster or more efficient than every Tiger Lake product.

So “Alder Lake is Intel’s 7 nm CPU” is misleading. The accurate shorthand is: Alder Lake uses Intel 7, Intel’s renamed 10nm Enhanced SuperFin process generation.

Intel 4: EUV and Meteor Lake’s compute tile

Intel 4 was formerly Intel’s planned 7nm process. Intel described it as its first process to fully embrace extreme ultraviolet lithography, or EUV. EUV is a way of patterning selected layers during chip production; it is one part of a process, not the definition of the whole node. In its 2021 roadmap material, Intel claimed about 20% higher performance per watt for Intel 4 versus Intel 7. This is Intel’s own generation-to-generation claim, not a direct comparison between retail processors.

The first major consumer generation associated with Intel 4 was Meteor Lake, marketed as Core Ultra Series 1. Intel’s Core Ultra process information identifies the platform with Intel 4. But Meteor Lake is a tiled package: Intel 4 applies to its compute tile, not automatically to every tile or component in the package. Intel’s Meteor Lake product database identifies the family; tile-level process attribution should be read in that context.

Intel 3: an enhanced Intel 4 generation

Intel 3 is not a literal promise of 3 nm features. Intel describes it as a refinement of Intel 4, with EUV, improved libraries and interconnect efficiency. Its current foundry process specifications cite approximately 18% higher performance at iso-power and up to 8% greater chip density versus Intel 4. “At iso-power” means comparing performance at the same power condition; these are Intel’s process-level figures, not independent benchmark results or a forecast for every product.

Intel positions Intel 3 for high-performance computing and foundry customers. Variants include Intel 3-E, with expanded I/O and analog capability, and Intel 3-T, which adds support for pass-through TSVs. These variants address different design needs and should not be treated as interchangeable labels. Intel’s 2025 filing reports that Intel 3 entered high-volume manufacturing in 2024; that milestone is distinct from a specific product’s launch or availability to customers.

Granite Rapids and Sierra Forest are representative server-era product families associated with Intel 3. Intel’s Granite Rapids product listings are one place to check a specific product family rather than infer its process from a generation number.

Intel 20A, angstrom names and the shift to 18A

The “A” in 20A and 18A stands for angstrom: one angstrom is 0.1 nanometer, so the names evoke 2 nm and 1.8 nm, respectively. They remain process-brand names, not guarantees that every transistor feature measures exactly 20 or 18 angstroms.

Intel announced 20A as a major technology transition. Its planned innovations included RibbonFET, Intel’s gate-all-around transistor architecture, and PowerVia, backside power delivery that separates power routing from front-side signal routing. Intel’s 2021 process and packaging announcement described that roadmap.

The roadmap changed: Intel’s 2024 annual filing says it canceled Intel 20A productization and focused resources on Intel 18A. Therefore, 20A belongs in the history of Intel’s planned transition, not in a list of mainstream shipping CPU nodes.

Intel 18A is the prioritized successor. Intel describes it as combining RibbonFET, PowerVia and EUV. Its foundry process page cites up to 18% higher performance at iso-power, 38% lower power at iso-performance and 30% greater chip density versus Intel 3, based on Intel’s internal comparisons. Those conditions matter: the figures describe process comparisons under specified power conditions and are not a prediction that an 18A retail processor will outperform an Intel 3 processor by those percentages.

Intel announced Panther Lake in October 2025 as its first client SoC built on Intel 18A, saying it was in production and headed toward high-volume production in Arizona. That does not mean every part of the SoC or package is necessarily made on 18A. Intel’s Panther Lake product listings give Q1 2026 launch dates for listed products; availability can vary by SKU, OEM and market. Intel’s Panther Lake announcement describes the process claim at the SoC level.

Intel 4 Meteor Lake compute tile Not a claim that every Meteor Lake tile uses Intel 4.
Intel 3 Granite Rapids/Sierra Forest-era server families; foundry offerings Intel reported high-volume manufacturing in 2024.
Intel 20A Productization canceled Planned process associated with RibbonFET and PowerVia; not a mainstream shipping CPU node.
Intel 18A Panther Lake client SoC; Clearwater Forest server products and foundry offerings Prioritized successor to 20A; verify process attribution for individual tiles and SKUs.
Intel 14A Future roadmap item Do not treat as a broadly shipping consumer process without product-specific confirmation.

This map separates product generations and process names: 12th Gen and 13th Gen are Core product generations; Alder Lake, Raptor Lake and Meteor Lake are codenames; Intel 7, Intel 4, Intel 3 and Intel 18A are process labels; Core, Core Ultra and Xeon are product brands. A newer CPU generation does not by itself prove a newer Intel-manufactured process. Products can use backported processes, multiple tiles, or tiles made by external foundries.

What a process number can—and cannot—tell you

  • It can identify a manufacturing generation. Intel 7 and Intel 4 distinguish Intel process generations and their associated technology choices.
  • It cannot provide a universal feature measurement. The number is not enough to determine transistor dimensions, density or power use.
  • It cannot prove equivalence to another foundry. Similar labels do not mean identical process technology or design rules.
  • It cannot rank complete processors by speed or efficiency. Architecture, voltage, clock targets, cache, power limits, packaging, memory and workload all matter.
  • It may apply to only part of a package. With tiled designs, check whether a claim refers to the compute tile, another tile, or the complete SoC.

How to check the process for a specific Intel processor

  1. Open the Intel product specification page. Start with the exact CPU or platform rather than assuming every member of a product family has the same configuration.
  2. Check Intel ARK’s codename listings. Use the relevant Meteor Lake, Arrow Lake or Panther Lake page as applicable. Product launch timing and availability may differ by SKU and market.
  3. Read the process claim at the level Intel states it. An announcement may say a compute tile or client SoC uses a process; do not silently broaden that to every component in the package.
  4. Use current official information for roadmap changes. Intel’s 2024 annual filing documents the 20A productization cancellation, while its 2025 filing reports Intel 3 high-volume manufacturing in 2024.
