The best place to resell a Kindle depends on whether you want the highest possible cash return, a quick local handoff, or the least work. For a working Kindle, compare eBay and Swappa against completed sales and fees. Facebook Marketplace suits local pickup; Amazon Trade-In pays Amazon credit, not cash; BuyBackWorld offers a direct buyback quote. Before handing over any device, remove your personal files, deregister it, and reset it.
Compare the five places to sell a Kindle
| Place | Best for | Payment | Fees and condition | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| eBay | Uncommon, premium, or bundled Kindles; broad buyer reach | Platform payment payout | Final value and per-order fees apply; broken devices can be listed if described accurately | More work, shipping, and potential returns or disputes |
| Facebook Marketplace | Local pickup and avoiding shipping | Agreed local payment method; features vary | Fees and checkout options depend on transaction type, location, and account | Screen buyers, verify payment, and arrange a safe handoff |
| Swappa | Working Kindles and a tech-focused marketplace | Marketplace payout | Listings are free; Swappa states a 3% seller fee when sold. Device must meet functional-condition rules | Fewer Kindle buyers than eBay may mean a slower sale |
| Amazon Trade-In | Convenience, especially if you already shop at Amazon | Amazon digital gift card | Quote and eligibility depend on model and condition; promotions are temporary | Not cash, and the offer may be lower than a direct sale |
| BuyBackWorld | A direct cash quote without finding a buyer | Cash payout, according to the service | Quote varies by model and condition; some broken Kindles may receive offers | Convenience can mean less than a successful marketplace sale |
These options cover Kindle e-readers, not Fire tablets. Some buyback sites group both product types together, but offers and eligibility differ. Check the device category and exact model before accepting a quote.
1. eBay: broad reach and control over your asking price
eBay is a useful starting point if you have a Paperwhite, Oasis, Scribe, Voyage, Colorsoft, an older model with a following, or a bundle with useful accessories. Its larger audience can help an unusual device find a buyer, but there is no guaranteed highest net payout: fees, shipping, and time all affect what you keep.
Calculate the likely net, not just the sale price
eBay’s Seller Center lists a 9.35% final value fee for most U.S. Consumer Electronics sales up to $2,500, plus $0.40 per order over $10. The exact Kindle category assignment and fee depend on the seller’s account terms, so verify them on eBay’s current seller-fees page before setting a minimum price. eBay also describes up to 250 zero-insertion-fee listings per month for many casual sellers, subject to account and category exclusions; a listing fee and a final value fee are different charges. Its fee rules can calculate the final value fee on the total sale amount, including shipping collected from the buyer.

- Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
- Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
Use completed or sold listings for the same generation and configuration as a guide, not active listings that may never sell. Estimate: sale price minus marketplace fees, shipping, packaging, payment costs, and the possible cost of a return or dispute. Do not compare a marketplace asking price with a trade-in quote as if both were money in hand.
Make the listing specific
“Kindle Paperwhite” is not enough: generations, storage, connectivity, and ad status differ. State the exact model and generation, storage capacity, Wi-Fi or cellular configuration, whether it has special offers (ads), screen and casing condition, charging behavior, known battery weakness, and what is included. Say whether the Kindle powers on, charges, responds to touch or buttons, and connects to Wi-Fi. Photograph the exterior, screen, ports, powered-on state, and accessories. Avoid publishing a serial number unnecessarily.
Use tracked shipping, retain the tracking number, and keep photographs of the device and packed parcel. Keep payment and communication on eBay; eBay warns that moving a sale off-platform to avoid fees can violate its rules and may not avoid the fees. Check the platform’s current return and seller-protection terms before listing.
2. Facebook Marketplace: local pickup without packing a parcel
Marketplace can be practical for common Basic Kindles and Paperwhites, especially lower-value devices where shipping and fees would eat into the proceeds. A local buyer can inspect the Kindle, and you can demonstrate that it powers on without logging in to your Amazon account. Local demand and buyer reliability vary, and not every listing or account has the same checkout or shipping features.

Reduce handoff and payment risk
- Arrange to meet in a busy, well-lit public place; consider a designated police-station exchange area where available.
- Agree on the payment method in advance. Hand over the Kindle only after payment appears in your own account or you have verified it directly.
- Do not rely on payment screenshots, accept an overpayment and return the difference, or pay a fee to receive money.
- Review the buyer’s profile and ratings, and keep messages on Marketplace.
- Describe the model and defects clearly, use real photographs, and state an actual asking price rather than a misleading placeholder.
Facebook’s electronics-selling guidance recommends clearing personal information, recording the serial number, accurately describing condition, using clear photographs, and reviewing buyer profiles and ratings. Keep the serial number privately for your records rather than posting it publicly.
3. Swappa: a focused marketplace for a working Kindle
Swappa is worth comparing when your Kindle is functional and you prefer a technology-focused marketplace. Its Kindle Paperwhite page describes free listings, recently sold pricing data, and a 3% seller fee when an item sells. Confirm the current fee and whether your exact model is supported on the Kindle selling page and Swappa’s general selling page.
Swappa’s rules make it a poor fit for a Kindle with cracked glass, water damage, or a serious fault. Its Kindle listing criteria emphasize full functionality, including the buttons, ports, and battery. Describe battery performance honestly: “powers on” does not establish that it holds a charge well. Listing review adds structure but does not guarantee a sale or eliminate buyer disputes.
Swappa says its selling process involves finding the product, creating a listing, submitting it for approval, and receiving payment after a sale. Compare the expected net amount with eBay sold listings after accounting for fees and postage. Swappa’s separate trade-in partner network is not the same as selling directly on Swappa; partner quotes and quote-lock periods vary.

4. Amazon Trade-In: easiest when Amazon credit is useful
Amazon Trade-In accepts some Kindle e-readers, but the exact offer and eligibility depend on model and condition. Payment is a digital Amazon gift card, not ordinary cash. That can be worthwhile if you already plan to spend the credit at Amazon; a gift card’s face value is less useful if you rarely shop there.
Amazon says trade-ins can be shipped free or dropped off at participating locations, and eligible offers may include a temporary promotional discount on a qualifying device. The promotion, eligible products, and deadlines can change. Check Amazon’s current Trade-In details for the offer, shipping instructions, and deadline before sending the Kindle. Answer condition questions accurately, save the quote and its expiration date, and retain the shipping receipt and tracking information.
5. BuyBackWorld: a direct quote for cash
BuyBackWorld is an alternative if you would rather receive a direct quote than find and negotiate with an individual buyer. Its Amazon tablet page lists Kindle families including Paperwhite, Oasis, Scribe, Voyage, Colorsoft, and older Kindles. A listing does not mean every generation or damaged condition will receive an offer.
The company advertises upfront cash quotes, free shipping, no fees, payment within two business days after processing, and a free return if its price changes. Those are the service’s claims, not a guaranteed universal turnaround; shipping and inspection time can affect when money arrives. Before accepting, check whether your quote is locked, what happens if inspection finds a different condition, and how to decline an adjusted offer. Compare the cash quote with the likely marketplace net, not the gross asking price.

How to choose based on your priorities
- Want the best chance at a higher cash return? Compare eBay sold listings and Swappa pricing for your exact working model. The extra potential proceeds come with listing, packing, and buyer-management work.
- Want a quick local handoff? Try Facebook Marketplace if you are comfortable screening a buyer and meeting safely.
- Want minimal effort and Amazon credit? Get an Amazon Trade-In quote, particularly if you already plan to use the credit or qualify for a current promotion.
- Want a direct cash quote without a private buyer? Check BuyBackWorld, then compare its offer with marketplace net proceeds.
- Have a broken Kindle? eBay or Facebook may allow a prominently disclosed parts/repair listing; BuyBackWorld may quote some damaged devices. Swappa’s functional-device rules generally make it unsuitable. Check Amazon eligibility rather than assuming a defective device qualifies.
There is no universal highest-paying place. The result depends on generation, storage, Wi-Fi or cellular capability, condition, battery behavior, accessories, shipping costs, platform fees, local demand, and how long you are willing to wait.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Identify the Kindle and assess its condition
Find the exact product family, generation or release year, storage capacity, connectivity, and model number. Depending on the model, the Amazon device settings or the device information screen can help identify it; use the model number to distinguish generations when a product-family name is ambiguous. Record the serial number privately. Include ad-supported or ad-free status if you can verify it, plus screen size where relevant.
Check the screen for cracks, scratches, dead pixels, discoloration, or persistent ghosting; inspect the bezel, rear casing, corners, buttons, and charging port. Test power, charging, touchscreen or page-turn buttons, and Wi-Fi. Note battery behavior from ordinary use without inventing a battery-health percentage. Include a case or charger if it makes the bundle more useful: a branded, model-specific case may help, while a common cable or generic case may add little. Sell a rare accessory separately only if the extra listing and postage are worth the effort.
Prepare the Kindle before listing or shipping
- Back up what you need. Copy personal documents and files you want to keep, then remove private files from the Kindle. Purchased Kindle books stay associated with your Amazon account; do not promise that your library transfers with the hardware.
- Record its condition and identity. Photograph the screen, casing, ports, powered-on state, and accessories. Keep the serial number and transaction records privately.
- Deregister the device. On many recent Kindles, the path is Settings → Your Account → Deregister Device. Older models may use different labels or put account controls under “My Account.” Follow Amazon’s current instructions for your model.
- Reset it separately. A common recent path is Settings → Device Options → Reset, but menu names vary by generation and software. Use the current Amazon support instructions for that device. Deregistration and a device reset are separate safeguards; do both.
- Keep proof of shipment or handoff. For a mailed sale, use tracked shipping and save the receipt. For a local sale, verify payment before handing over the device.
Amazon says it wipes and factory-resets devices received through Trade-In, but a private seller should still remove files, deregister, and reset before shipping or meeting a buyer. Facebook also advises clearing personal information before sale.

When selling may not be worth it
Swollen battery or unsafe device
Do not ship a Kindle with a swollen battery or treat it as an ordinary working device. A swollen lithium-ion battery can be hazardous. Follow local electronics or battery-recycling guidance.
Severe damage or no power
Disclose a cracked screen or other defect prominently and price the device as damaged or for parts. If it will not turn on, try a known-good cable and adapter, allow time to charge, and use only the documented restart procedure for that model. If it remains dead, seek a buyback or recycling option rather than describing it as merely “untested.”
Very old, low-value devices
For an old Kindle, weigh the likely net payout against postage, packaging, travel, and the time spent listing and answering messages. If those costs approach the expected return, recycling or donation may be more sensible than a sale.
