The ASUS ROG Phone 5 is the best-supported choice for heat management among Snapdragon 888 phones. Its centered system board, split battery and passive cooling are designed for sustained gaming; add the AeroActive Cooler 5 for the strongest documented cooling setup in this group. The Nubia RedMagic 6 is a promising alternative with an internal fan, but there is not enough directly comparable testing here to rank it above the ROG Phone 5. None of these phones stays cool under maximum sustained load, and buying one used means checking battery and accessory condition as carefully as the cooling hardware.
What “best heat dissipation” means
A phone’s temperature alone does not tell you how well it handles heat. A model that throttles quickly may feel cooler while losing performance; one that spreads heat into its frame may maintain performance but feel hot in your hands. Here, “best heat dissipation” means the strongest combination of sustained performance, controlled hotspots and cooling that remains useful during extended workloads.
Those outcomes are not interchangeable. Frame temperature, internal CPU telemetry, battery temperature and hand comfort measure different things. Comparisons are most useful when the workload, duration, ambient temperature, firmware, case, charger and measurement location are alike. The available results do not provide a single controlled test of every Snapdragon 888 phone in the same conditions, so the ranking below reflects the strength of the documented design and evidence, not a universal temperature league table.
| Phone | Cooling approach | Best suited to | Evidence and main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASUS ROG Phone 5 | Centered board, split battery, vapor chamber and graphite; optional external fan | Sustained gaming, especially with AeroActive Cooler 5 | Independent reviewers report sustained gaming performance, but Notebookcheck measured a frame temperature up to 51.6°C in its test. Android Central review; Notebookcheck thermal testing |
| Nubia RedMagic 6 / 6 Pro | Gaming-phone design with an internal fan and passive cooling assembly | Buyers who want active cooling and gaming-focused features | RedMagic 6 is identified as a Snapdragon 888 phone, but the cited listing does not establish thermal performance. Comparable test evidence is insufficient for a direct ranking. Device listing |
| Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra | Passive flagship cooling | Camera-focused buyers who also play games | Notebookcheck’s review did not find it ahead of the ROG Phone 5 in relevant performance results. Notebookcheck review |
| OnePlus 9 Pro and other mainstream Snapdragon 888 flagships | Primarily passive cooling | General-purpose flagship use | The evidence here does not establish these models as thermal leaders; confirm the chipset in the specific regional model. |
1. ASUS ROG Phone 5: best-supported overall choice
The ROG Phone 5’s GameCool 5 design places the Snapdragon 888 system board near the center of the phone, with a split 6,000 mAh battery arranged on either side. ASUS describes a vapor chamber, graphite sheets and an aluminum internal frame as part of the heat-spreading system. The centered layout is intended to move heat toward the chassis edges rather than concentrate it directly under the fingers in landscape orientation. ASUS lists the 6,000 mAh capacity and Snapdragon 888 on its ROG Phone 5 product page and explains the layout in its cooling overview.

Independent testing gives this design a stronger case than hardware descriptions alone. Android Central reported consistent frame rates during extended gaming. But heat is still being transferred into the phone: Notebookcheck recorded a frame temperature up to 51.6°C (about 125°F) in its test conditions. That is a result from one review, not a guaranteed maximum for every unit or workload. The practical point is that effective heat spreading can help sustained performance without making the handset cool to touch.
With AeroActive Cooler 5
The AeroActive Cooler 5 is an external fan accessory positioned over the system-board area. ASUS claims that, under its testing, it can reduce CPU temperature by up to 10°C and surface temperature near the CPU by up to 15°C. These are manufacturer claims, not universal results; ASUS’s product information and explanation are at the ROG Phone 5 product page and its cooling article.
For long gaming sessions, the ROG Phone 5 with a working AeroActive Cooler 5 is the strongest documented setup in this comparison. The accessory adds bulk and a fan, and availability depends on market and bundle. Armoury Crate performance profiles give owners control over gaming settings, but aggressive profiles can also increase heat and battery use.
Standard, Pro and Ultimate variants
The ROG Phone 5 Pro and Ultimate share the core GameCool 5 approach. Their higher-memory configurations or cosmetic differences do not by themselves prove better thermal performance. ASUS advertised up to 18 GB of RAM for the Ultimate in its series announcement; specifications and bundles vary by region. A standard ROG Phone 5 with a healthy battery and an available cooler can be a more sensible thermal purchase than paying a premium for a variant without one.
2. Nubia RedMagic 6 and 6 Pro: active-cooling alternatives
The RedMagic 6 family is worth considering because its gaming-focused design includes an internal fan alongside passive cooling hardware. The RedMagic 6 is identified as a Snapdragon 888 phone in the cited device listing. A fan can help move heat, but its presence alone does not prove lower temperatures or better sustained performance: airflow path, contact between the chip and heat spreader, firmware limits, room temperature and the fan’s condition all matter.

There is not enough directly comparable testing in the cited material to declare the RedMagic 6 cooler than the ROG Phone 5. Also, cooling specifications for current RedMagic models should not be applied to this 2021 generation; the brand’s current cooling page is not evidence for the RedMagic 6. On a used unit, test that the fan starts and runs consistently, and weigh noise, software condition, camera needs, update expectations and regional warranty against the gaming features.
3. Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra: camera-first, not thermal-first
The Mi 11 Ultra is a substantial Snapdragon 888 flagship with a strong camera proposition and passive cooling. It may suit someone who values photography and general flagship features but still wants to game occasionally. In Notebookcheck’s review, it did not beat the ROG Phone 5 in relevant performance testing. That comparison is specific to the review’s test suite and firmware, rather than a claim that the ROG wins every possible workload. See the Notebookcheck review.
4. OnePlus 9 Pro and other Snapdragon 888 flagships
The OnePlus 9 Pro is a mainstream flagship comparison, not a proven cooling champion in the evidence available here. It may be a better fit for someone who wants a conventional design and a general-purpose Android experience, but it should not be selected primarily for sustained thermal performance on this basis.
The Xiaomi Mi 11, Mi 11 Pro, Xiaomi 11T Pro, Xiaomi Mi MIX Fold, OnePlus 9, Black Shark 4 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S21 models in Snapdragon markets are among the other devices associated with the Snapdragon 888 generation. A device-family list is a way to identify candidates, not evidence of their cooling performance; see the Snapdragon device-family reference. Regional variants can use different chipsets, so check the precise model number and market before buying. Do not treat Snapdragon 888+ models as Snapdragon 888 devices: the 888+ is a distinct, higher-clocked variant.

The Snapdragon 888 is Qualcomm’s 5 nm flagship platform, with a Cortex-X1 performance core, Adreno 660 graphics and integrated 5G capabilities. Those specifications describe the chip, not how a particular handset handles heat. Qualcomm’s platform page does not establish a device-level cooling winner.

Heat under load depends on the whole phone and how it is being used. A demanding game at high refresh rate, weak cellular signal, 5G data use, video recording or fast charging can add to the thermal load. So can high ambient temperature or a thick case that slows heat transfer. Firmware power limits and game optimization affect whether a device maintains performance or reduces clocks. A large vapor chamber or graphite spreader is a design component, not a guarantee of lower temperatures: placement, contact, chassis materials and software tuning matter too.
Passive and active cooling
- Passive cooling uses components such as vapor chambers, copper or graphite spreaders, thermal pads and the frame. It is silent and needs no accessory, but heat eventually accumulates, and cases can impede its escape.
- Active cooling uses a fan, either built into the phone or attached as an accessory. It can help during long gaming sessions, but adds noise, power draw or bulk. A cooler exterior does not guarantee that every internal component is cooler, and a fan cannot repair poor firmware tuning or a degraded battery.
Charging while gaming adds another heat source. Where the phone offers bypass or direct-power modes, they can reduce heat associated with charging the battery, but they do not remove heat generated by the processor, display or modem. Avoid maximum-performance gaming while fast charging when possible; remove a thick case, keep the phone off fabric and out of direct sun, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for any cooler.

These are 2021-era phones, so current availability, battery condition, software support, repairs and warranty depend on country, seller and individual device. A cooling advantage is not worth buying a damaged handset. Check the following before committing:
- Ask for battery-health information or run the phone’s available diagnostics. Reject a unit with a swollen battery or back panel lifting away from the body.
- On a ROG Phone 5, confirm the AeroActive Cooler 5 is included if the price assumes it, that it is genuine and compatible with the exact model, and that the phone recognizes it.
- On a RedMagic 6, test that the internal fan starts and runs consistently; listen for abnormal noise.
- Inspect the USB-C port and look for signs of heavy wear, prior repair or damage.
- Test gaming, 5G and Wi-Fi stability. Repeated crashes, extreme heat during light tasks or unstable connections are reasons to walk away.
- Ask about continuous gaming, emulation or mining use, and check bootloader or regional restrictions that could affect your intended use.
- Confirm return terms, warranty coverage and local repair options. Older models and cooling accessories may not be available through normal first-party stock.
Prefer a seller who permits returns. A detached back panel, swelling battery or rapid temperature rise in ordinary use is a safety or condition warning, not a minor cosmetic defect.
Which one should you choose?
- For the strongest documented sustained-gaming setup: ROG Phone 5 with a working AeroActive Cooler 5.
- For the strongest documented passive design: the standard ROG Phone 5; expect it to become hot under heavy sustained load.
- For built-in active cooling: consider RedMagic 6 or 6 Pro, but verify fan operation and do not assume they outperform the ROG without comparable tests.
- For camera-first flagship use with occasional gaming: Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra.
- For a conventional flagship experience: OnePlus 9 Pro may suit general use, but the evidence here does not make it a thermal leader.
If a used Snapdragon 888 phone is in poor condition or lacks a dependable return path, its original cooling design should not outweigh those risks. A newer phone is a separate category rather than a fair entrant in this 888 comparison; for example, the ROG Phone 6 uses Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, not Snapdragon 888.
