It adds an ongoing spoken conversation to AI Mode and, where enabled, lets you share a live camera view so Search can respond to what you are looking at. It is not a brand-new August 2026 launch: Google introduced it in stages from June 2025 and expanded it to more than 200 countries and territories in March 2026.
What Google Search Live does
Search Live is a conversational mode inside Google Search. Instead of submitting one voice query and waiting for one response, you can ask follow-up questions without restating the context. Google describes the experience as using a custom Gemini-based voice system connected to Search, so spoken answers can lead to ordinary web results and links.
Where camera input is enabled, you can point the phone at an object, scene, document, plant, appliance, sign or tool and ask questions about what is visible. The camera feed provides context for the conversation; it does not guarantee that every object or detail will be identified correctly.
Search Live is different from asking Google Assistant to read a result aloud. It is also not simply another name for the Gemini app. Search Live is designed around Search information and links, while Gemini Live is a separate assistant-style conversation experience.

Google’s June 2025 announcement introduced voice input in AI Mode and said camera support would follow. The later U.S. launch guidance describes camera sharing as part of the experience.
Is Search Live available on Android and iPhone?
Yes, through the Google app on Android and iOS. Google’s support documentation does not describe Search Live as a feature that must be used on a Pixel phone, nor does it make the mobile browser the standard entry point. On an iPhone or iPad, use Google’s app rather than expecting Search Live to replace Siri.
Access still depends on AI Mode being available for your account, country, language and app rollout. A global announcement does not mean every account receives the same button or camera controls on the same day.

How to start a Search Live session
From the Google app
- Install or update the Google app from your device’s app store.
- Open the app on Android or iOS and sign in if prompted.
- Look below the Search bar for the Live button or Live icon.
- Tap Live and complete any first-use instructions.
- Start speaking. Ask follow-up questions naturally instead of repeating the original query.
- If the control is available, tap the video or camera button to share what the phone is viewing.
Google’s Android instructions use the path Google app → Live below the Search bar. The exact icon placement can vary by app version and staged rollout.

From Google Lens
If you are already in Google Lens, Google says you can select Live at the bottom of the screen. This is an alternative entry point; it may not appear in every version of the app or on every account.
Controls during a session
- Mute the microphone when you do not want the app to hear spoken audio.
- Use the video control to stop camera sharing.
- Say “stop” or use the on-screen control to interrupt a spoken response.
- Open the three-dot menu to submit feedback about a session.
Microphone permission is required for voice interaction. Camera permission is required only when you turn on visual input. Google’s Search Live help page documents these controls and permissions.
What it is useful for
Search Live is most useful when the subject is in front of you or when one question naturally leads to several others.

These are exploratory uses, not a promise that Search Live can diagnose a fault, identify every object, or provide professional advice.

Availability, Labs and language limits
The original U.S. experiment did require enrollment in Google Labs. That was the June 2025 starting point, not a permanent requirement. Google’s September 2025 U.S. English announcement said no Labs opt-in was required for that launch. The March 2026 expansion followed AI Mode availability across more than 200 countries and territories and all languages covered by AI Mode.
In practice, access can still vary by account, language, country, app version and rollout stage. Voice may appear before camera controls, or the Live button may be absent even when Google lists your market as supported.
Privacy before you turn on the microphone or camera
Microphone access is necessary for spoken interaction; camera sharing is an optional visual mode. Treat either input as something you deliberately provide to Google Search, not as a harmless overlay.
- Do not point the camera at passports, driving licences, medical records, financial documents, passwords or authentication codes.
- Avoid private work screens, proprietary equipment and confidential conversations.
- Ask permission before including other people, and be especially careful with children or vulnerable people.
- Stop camera sharing with the video control and mute the microphone when they are not needed.
- Review Search and account activity settings separately if you are concerned about how Search history is stored or used.
Google’s support guidance specifically asks users to respect other people’s privacy and obtain permission before recording or including them in a Search Live conversation: Search Live help. The cited product material does not establish a universal retention period or a single model-training policy, so do not assume that turning off the camera changes all Search-history settings.

A fluent voice can make an uncertain answer sound authoritative. Search Live may produce incomplete or outdated information, misread an image, transcribe speech incorrectly or lose track of a long exchange. Low light, motion blur, small text, unusual angles and noisy surroundings make visual and voice errors more likely.

Use it for explanation, brainstorming and a first pass. Open the linked sources when a claim matters, and consult an appropriately qualified professional for medical, legal, financial, electrical, structural or other safety-critical decisions. Ordinary Search is often better when you need exact wording, several sources side by side, a durable written record or no microphone/camera sharing at all.
What to do when the Live button is missing
- Update the Google app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
- Confirm that you are signed in to a Google account.
- Check whether AI Mode itself is available for your country, language and account.
- Open your phone’s app permissions and allow microphone access for voice use.
- Allow camera access if voice works but visual input is missing.
- Force-close and reopen the Google app, then restart the phone.
- Try opening Google Lens and look for the Live option at the bottom.
- Allow for a staged or account-level rollout; reinstalling the app is not guaranteed to enable a feature that has not reached your account.
- If a partial session opens, use the three-dot menu to send feedback.
The documented requirement is the Google app and the appropriate permissions; Google’s support page does not promise a universal fix for rollout-related absence: Search Live support.
Does Search Live cost extra?
Google’s cited Search Live announcements do not identify a separate paid subscription requirement for the mobile feature. That means there is no separately stated Search Live fee in those launch materials, not that every Google AI feature has identical limits or pricing. Your mobile carrier may still charge for data, and other Google AI products or usage limits can change independently.
Choosing the right tool
Choose Search Live when
- You expect several follow-up questions.
- The subject is physically present and easier to show than describe.
- You want spoken guidance plus the option to inspect Search links.
- The task is exploratory and not safety-critical.
Choose ordinary Search when
- You need precise wording, multiple sources or a lasting written record.
- The subject is legal, medical, financial or otherwise high stakes.
- Privacy makes sharing a microphone or camera inappropriate.
- A simple text query will be faster.
Choose Gemini Live or Lens when
- Gemini Live: your task is general assistant conversation, planning, brainstorming or understanding what is on your phone screen.
- Google Lens: you need a single image lookup, translation, text extraction or quick visual search without an extended dialogue.
The Bottom Line
Search Live is a real Android and iPhone feature in the Google app: a continuing, voice-first Search conversation with optional camera context. Its broad rollout makes it useful for exploratory, multimodal questions, but account and regional availability still vary, and important answers should be checked against sources or a qualified professional.
