Garmin wins as an ultramarathon race instrument. A Seiko can survive rain, sweat and rough use—and may be the better choice if you only need the time—but a conventional Seiko cannot replace GPS distance, route navigation, pace, elevation, heart-rate data, alerts or an activity file. The practical answer depends on what “survive” means: physically endure the event, keep displaying time, or remain useful as a race computer.
The short verdict
| Need | Better choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Time of day only | Seiko | Simple, independent and free from charging, pairing and software. |
| GPS distance, pace and route recording | Garmin | Built as a sports computer with satellite positioning. |
| Following a GPX course | Garmin | Maps and navigation are integrated. |
| Lowest purchase price | Seiko | Representative models cost far less than an Enduro 3. |
| Backup timekeeper | Seiko | Useful if electronics fail or you prefer an analog display. |
| Race data and safety functions | Garmin | Supports training metrics, alerts and qualifying incident features. |
For a 50K, 50-mile, 100K or 100-mile event, choose Garmin when pacing, navigation or recording matters. Choose Seiko when the watch is deliberately just a clock—or wear both for redundancy.
These are not really competing watch categories
What a conventional Seiko does
“Seiko” covers automatic, quartz, solar and GPS-solar watches. A representative Seiko 5 Sports SRPE55 is an automatic analog watch with a 4R36 movement, approximately 41 hours of power reserve, Hardlex crystal, 10 bar water resistance, 142 g listed weight and a U.S. listed price of $315: Seiko SRPE55 specifications. It tells time and date; it does not record a route, calculate live pace or upload a workout.
Seiko variants change the power question
- Automatic: finite reserve and movement-dependent accuracy; wrist motion may keep it running, but that is not guaranteed.
- Quartz: long battery life and precise everyday timekeeping. The Prospex SUR622 lists approximately three years of battery life: Seiko SUR622.
- Solar: light replenishes the electronic battery, but an analog solar model still normally lacks running analytics.
- Astron/GPS-solar: some models synchronize time by GPS. Time correction is not the same as continuous activity tracking, navigation or training analysis; check the exact reference before buying.
What Garmin Enduro 3 is
Garmin’s Enduro 3 is a 51 mm endurance GPS smartwatch with a titanium bezel, fiber-reinforced polymer case, Power Sapphire lens, 10 ATM rating, maps, multi-band GPS, solar charging and an LED flashlight. Garmin lists a U.S. suggested retail price of $899.99 and 63 g weight in its launch announcement: Garmin Enduro 3 announcement.

Can each watch keep working for the whole race?
Seiko power reserves are finite
An SRPE55 automatic has approximately 41 hours of reserve when fully wound. A 100-mile race can approach or exceed that duration. Wearing it continuously may add winding through arm movement, but winding state, movement condition and motion vary. A mechanical watch can stop. Mechanical precision is also different from digital timing: Seiko lists the SPB505 at +25 to −15 seconds per day, with approximately 72 hours of reserve: Seiko SPB505.

| Mode | Typical claim | With solar |
|---|---|---|
| GPS only | 120 hours | 320 hours |
| All satellite systems | 80 hours | 144 hours |
| All systems + multi-band | 60 hours | 90 hours |
| All systems + music | 22 hours | Not listed |
| Max Battery GPS | 210 hours | Unlimited under stated solar conditions |
| Smartwatch mode | 36 days | 90 days |
See the Enduro 3 battery table. These are maximum manufacturer figures, not race guarantees. GPS mode, navigation, optical heart rate, notifications, music, sensors, temperature and screen use reduce endurance. Solar figures assume specified exposure, including 50,000-lux conditions; forests, night, cloud and clothing do not provide that continuously. For a 30–50-hour 100-mile race, test the selected mode on a long training outing and leave margin.
What Garmin adds during an ultra
- GPS distance, speed, pace and route recording.
- Elevation, ascent and trail metrics such as grade-adjusted pace.
- Preloaded TopoActive maps, course following and dynamic navigation.
- Wrist heart rate, training status and readiness features.
- Configurable alerts for time, pace, heart rate, nutrition or hydration.
- LiveTrack, incident detection and assistance when a compatible phone, service and regional requirements are met.
- Music storage, Garmin Pay and an integrated LED flashlight.
Those functions are why Garmin is more likely to remain useful through an ultra. GPS itself is not infallible: canyons, dense forest, tunnels and switchbacks can distort distance or instantaneous pace.

Durability, comfort and readability
Weight and fit
The supplied metal-bracelet Seiko examples are substantially heavier: SRPE55 is listed at 142 g, SSK005 at 161 g and Prospex SRPE27 at 186 g. The Enduro 3 is listed at 63 g. A lighter strap can change a Seiko’s result, while the 51 mm Garmin case may still overwhelm a small wrist. Test the exact watch and strap before race day; sweat and a bracelet can create hot spots.
Water, impact and temperature
SRPE27 has a 200 m diver’s rating, while SPB505 is rated 20 bar; those ratings describe water resistance, not running performance. Enduro 3 is rated 10 ATM. Garmin lists an operating range of −20°C to 45°C in its specifications: Garmin Enduro 3 specifications. Sapphire is highly scratch-resistant but can chip; Hardlex and mechanical components have different impact and service risks. Cold can reduce rechargeable-battery performance, while shock, magnetism and temperature can affect mechanical accuracy.

At night
Seiko lume gives a quick analog time check, depending on model and remaining brightness. Garmin offers configurable data screens, a backlight and a flashlight, so it is far better for reading pace or navigating after dark. It is not a substitute for a required headlamp.

If Garmin fails or runs low
- Start fully charged and confirm the course is loaded.
- Acquire satellites before the start and select the battery mode for the expected duration.
- Disable nonessential notifications, music and sensors when margin is tight.
- Use course markings and carry a paper or printed reference where appropriate.
- Carry a backup time source; use a cable and power bank only when race rules and aid-station access permit.
- Know how to resume an accidentally paused activity.
If Seiko fails
An automatic may run out of reserve; a quartz battery eventually needs replacement; seals can leak; a crown, clasp or bracelet can be damaged; and hands or lume may become hard to read. Its advantage is that it cannot lose a GPS track or corrupt a workout because it has none.

Which runner should buy which?
- Data-driven racer or 100-mile competitor: Garmin, with a tested low-power plan and backup navigation.
- First-time 50K runner: Garmin if pacing or course guidance matters; Seiko if the event is marked and you already carry another GPS device.
- Minimalist or traditional-watch enthusiast: Seiko, accepting that distance and pace require another device.
- Budget buyer: Seiko is cheaper as a timekeeper, but add the cost of a separate GPS device before calling it the cheaper race solution.
- Runner wanting one watch for training and daily life: Enduro 3 offers the broader capability; a Seiko offers simpler ownership and analog style.
Check race rules before relying on phones, headphones, live tracking, power banks or outside assistance. Course markings and mandatory equipment remain authoritative.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a mechanical Seiko last a 100-mile race?
It may, but an automatic model’s finite reserve can be exceeded and wrist motion does not guarantee continued winding. Confirm the movement is fully wound and treat it as a timekeeper, not a GPS instrument.
Is Garmin’s 320-hour battery claim realistic?
It is an ‘up to’ solar-assisted GPS-only figure under stated light conditions. Multi-band GPS, maps, heart rate, music, cold and screen use can reduce runtime substantially.
Can a Seiko Astron replace a Garmin?
GPS-solar Astron models can synchronize time, but that does not automatically provide continuous GPS activity tracking, route navigation or Garmin-style training analytics. Verify the exact reference.
The Bottom Line
For surviving an ultramarathon as a useful race computer, Garmin wins. For surviving as a simple, independent analog clock, Seiko remains compelling. Runners who value both data and redundancy should use Garmin as the primary device and Seiko as a backup or everyday watch.
